I never thought Troodon would eat plants in any capacity, but this new study suggesting they were omnivores is fascinating. I suppose it makes sense, they're often considered the smartest of the dinosaurs and a mixed diet is fueled the brains our ancestors to develop to where they are now.

While we cannot know for sure I would dare to suggest that diet of troodontids would largely depend on the environment and species hence why we get omnivory edging closer to plant eating as a result. We have to remember that this isn't one species but whole group and that as a rule herbivores are more abundant. If we have group with wide distribution of food specialization and fairly short time for speciation omnivory is the natural conclusion

it may be that these troodontids in these paleological sites, like The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), fed on certain plants for purposes other than food (Fruit, as can be seen from the molars particularly suited to the purpose, constitutes an important component of the diet, in particular the wild tomato plant (Solanum lycocarpum, also called wolf fruit or "lobeira") without which the animal would suffer from kidney stones through its excrements dispersing the seeds of the plant. We can therefore speak of a real and own biocoenosis. =from Wikipedia, it is only a possible scientific justification, perhaps not the right one but realistic)

@Ozraptor49 ай бұрын
What evidence? The Alaskan troodontid consists of one partial braincase and some river-washed isolated teeth.
@william31009 ай бұрын
@Ozraptor4 They analyzed the river-washed isolated teeth? The animal was bigger than other troodontids and probably filled a niche similar to dromaeosaurs because of its size, so it makes sense that it probably was more carnivorous.
@Ozraptor49 ай бұрын
@@william3100 Nope. Morphologically the Alaskan teeth are identical to Troodon formosus/Stenonychosaurus inequalis (ie. not suited for macropredation). Alaskan troodontid is no longer unusually large - it is the same size as Latenavenatrix from the Dinosaur Park Formation (now a junior synonym of Stenonychosaurus).
@william31009 ай бұрын
@Ozraptor4 I thought latenivenatrix WAS the Alaskan troodon given a name, but either way, I meant more carnivores as in more carnivores than not at all. Like most troodontids, it was still omnivorous. The study only said the troodontids were SLIGHTLY more herbivorous but are still omnivorous, and only troodontids from the formation they studied. What about other formations? Troodontids are not a species. They're a clade and very likely had a different kind of diet depending on the environment they lived in. They didn't say troodontids were definitely herbivorous. That assumption doesn't even make sense, considering many troodontids were obviously built to be more than just small herbivores. Many still had pointy teeth, which were good for catching small prey, along with flattened molar-like teeth for eating plants.
@Ozraptor49 ай бұрын
@@william3100 Latenavenatrix is from Alberta. The Alaskan troodontid is too fragmentary to be diagnostic - it is still labelled as "Troodon formosus" and has the same morphology as Troodon/Stenonychosaurus. There is no evidence that it was any more of a "meat eater" than the Albertan taxa.

The paper doesn't construct any strong proof of Troodontids being exclusive herbivores; there's no fossil evidence--that's what we need! Above all else, Pachycephalosaurs are absent from the study which could solidify their theory in my opinion and shouldn't count as definitive proof (5:19). Look, we all came to the consensus these theropods established a diverse dietary behavior thus far. But the specifics of which species in the group specialize in carnivory or herbivory or both still remains unclear. So until we find more evidence, let's not jump to conclusions to where this paper is cited as a leading source.
