Just tasted this fruit yesterday and fell in love with it,its sweet like a sweet potatoe and pumpkin like he said. My mother in law gave it to me and as soon as I finished I asked if she could bring me more from her house in Mexico. I'm thankful I got introduced to this fruit

I've been looking for this fruit for a long time. I'm originally from Central America so we used to eat it all the time. I finally found it at a North Gate Super Market, before I came across your video. I never thought of googling it. Thanks for the vid.

Very interesting. My wonderful young neighbors just returned from S Florida and brought us an assortment of tropical fruit, but all ready for eating. That mamey was the sweetest fruit I have ever eaten. Now I am totally hooked. Thanks for the additional information. Maybe if I hint enough, the neighbors will bring more....might make some cookies for them to sweeten the deal.

For freezing cut in cubes and flash freeze. Take a tray, cover with parchment paper and place the cubes so they don't touch each other. Once they are frozen for a few hours or even overnight, place in freezer bag. This way you can have loose fruit that is not all clumped up.

I once bought a bag of this fruit from a roadside stand while driving near, I believe was Florida City or Naranja. I bought them out of sheer curiosity and couldn't believe how good they were. However,some of them were very unevenly ripe which I thought was very unusual for a fruit. One part of it would be soft and sweet but there would be parts of the inside which were hard and unsweet.Normally, a fruit is either ripe or not, but this was unevenly ripe with some parts soft and other parts hard.
@TropicalFruitGrowers
@TropicalFruitGrowers 11 жыл бұрын
Oh my! I have never eaten banana peels but it sounds like the fruit was not ripe. Ripe mamey has a truly wonderful, rich flavor. Be sure to wait for the mature fruit (you can tell it is mature by the scratch test that shows orange color underneath) to be VERY soft before you open it. Then you will enjoy that delicious mamey flavor!
@TropicalFruitGrowers
@TropicalFruitGrowers 12 жыл бұрын
Yes, this uneven ripening occasionally happens. It is most likely due to either harvesting the fruit before it was fully mature on the tree, or not letting the fruit mature fully in your home. The large mamey takes longer to mature than other fruits. If it has not matured throughout and it is picked from the tree, those hard spots can occur.

@TropicalFruitGrowers
@TropicalFruitGrowers 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, the scratch test works on ALL mamey. Look for that orange color where you scratched to determine maturity of the fruit. If the fruit is squishy, it is already mature and has ripened. It should be ready to eat. If the fruit was picked immature from the tree, it would never ripen to that squishy, soft feel. If the fruit is firm, AND has orange-ish colored flesh from the scratch test, that fruit will ripen in a few days. Remember to let the fruit get very soft before you open it. ENJOY!
@TropicalFruitGrowers
@TropicalFruitGrowers 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right, they are the same fruit. Plants take on common names in the area in which they are grown. Sapodilla is Naseberry in the Caribbean; nispero in Cuba & Puerto Rico; chico in the Phillipenes; chicosapote in Mexico,.. These many local names are why EVERY plant in the world has been assigned ONE specific scientific name, a genus and species name - so that where ever you are in the world when you say Manilkara sapote you are talking about naseberry, chico and nispero!

Yes, mamey IS delicious! It is large (2-5 lbs), has a creamy texture and one big seed. We grow another fruit called sapodilla here in south Florida that is smaller than the mamey, and has 3-5 small, brown seeds inside. The flesh has the texture of a pear, and the flavor of brown sugar. They are in season right now! Visit our website for more on the sapodilla and to place an order. A sapodilla video comes out this month! Stay tuned to our channel!

Love your channel! I have a Sapote Mamey that I planted Aug 2018. At the time it was a 100 gallon tree. So far no fruits. For the past 2 years the flowers dried, but this season I have flowers that did not dry yet. Should I add Iron now? I added gypsum in November and Sept last year to the soil last year... Any advice?

Also, let your fruit get really soft and wrinkly before eating, so that it will be ripe all the way through. And be sure to do the scratch test on the fruit to be sure the fruit is mature throughout, and will ripen properly.

Namaste. I'm from India - Kerala. I hope you are safe and well during this tough time! I'm planning on planting the Mamey Sapote tree in my estate, if possible. )) So if I could somehow find out the dimensions of this tree that I saw in your video, it would give me a clear idea. I have seen varying specifics on the internet. And I'm not so sure. So could you please find out for me how much land space was occupied (dimensions - feet/meters) by this specific tree from its owner? In a domestic environment it grows less taller. Still the tree looks enormous!!! One more thing. How would you compare the Sapodila fruit with Mamey Sapote? I mean does it taste like Sapodila or is it completely different? Which fruit is sweeter and has a more fruity flavour? I have Sapodila trees here. ))) Thanks ahead. Pete :")

That depends on where in California the seeds have been planted. Mameys do not like temps below 32 degrees, so keep your plants in the hottest setting you can. I would suggest that you contact your County Extension agency (under County govn't in the phone book) and check with them on your local climate and soil conditions. Take this Factsheet with you to the agent (Google: "Mamey Sapote from Florida" Its an EDIS publication ) and they will be able to help you with these questions. Good luck!

Are these fruits grown with pesticides? Or are they organic? Love me some white sapote, but I usually get it from Glaser farms and I'm not sure where they are getting them from. Definitely interested in getting some more Sapote and Mamey, especially if local and organic.

Sorry, I just saw your comment. Mamey have specific soil and weather requirements, so I would contact your local County Extension agent and ask them. I would take the University of Florida's mamey information sheet with you so the agent can see what the mameys need to grow in your area. You can access that information sheet here on our mamey page on our website, tropicalfruitgrowers(dot)com Good luck!

Oh, No! It IS possible that still may be mature. Try taking a knife and scratching it, just a little, to check the color of the skin underneath. It should be a reddish-orange color. Even mature fruits can be very hard, but you should be able to scratch through the skin. Be sure to do the scratch test at the market before you buy it, so you can be sure that it will ripen. Good luck to you - I hope that your fruit will eventually ripen for you.

So is the scratch test the best way to determine which mamey to pick up at the grocery store? What about how squishy they are? I was checking some out earlier today and there were a few that were rather firm and a few that were extremely soft. What all should I look for in these?

HI, I would suggest contacting your County Cooperative Extension agency and bring with you the Univ. of Florida Fact Sheet you can find by Googling: "Growing Mamey in the Florida Homescape" .
