Many years experience with various diesel heaters during a 22 year career in the trucking industry. Prevent the clogging/sooting by running on highest temp setting for 1 hour each week. Large trucking company maintenance shops and Thermo-King recommended. Keeps the system clean and running👍. Doesn’t hurt to run on high more often either if running for long periods of time

Always run the heater on the highest setting for 5min before you shut it down. Try not to run it on it's lowest setting (I.e. if you have say 1.3 to 5 Hertz pump settings try to stay above 1.6 or greater). If you never run it on high before shutting down you will have to dismantle it and clean the burn chamber and glow plug hole. Make sure the tiny hole next to the glow plug is clear. Finally if you still have problems change the glow plug and make sure your fuel line is feeding constantly up from your fuel pump to the heater. Air bubbles form in the pump and must be released evenly upward for proper combustion. My 2cents, take care 7.

Seven, I congratulate you on your acquired skills since purchasing your van. You've learned well and have grown your knowledge and abilities by leaps and bounds. Learning your tools and now becoming a tool maker of sorts. A similar tool with a slot is used to change oxygen sensors on vehicle exhaust systems on cars and trucks. You're learning. You've had that heater now for quite a while and it's worked well for you. When you finally do get it fixed you will have learned much. Good Luck and we're all rooting for your success. Thanks and we'll be waiting for your next informative video.

The black plastic tool is not to remove but to push the new one in. I use the leg screw slightly grinded the edges and then covered it with electrical tape and I tested it on screen that was out already..that will work the best remove it

I would recommend having several screens and a glow plug on hand with the tools to install. If you get a glow plug, find with the socket. Screen usually comes with the installation tool (black plug) but removal is a small screw driver, pick and needle nose pliers. You need to be careful not to damage the area that it is installed. You also need to make sure you get the whole screen out and clean any debris that might have been left in the hole. You also need to clean the glow plug of any debris and any burns. Emery cloth works well.
@jrus2
@jrus2 4 жыл бұрын
The black plastic tool is an installation tool not a removal tool. I would buy a few screens, they can be difficult to remove and install. I would also keep a glow plug on hand. You can get it with the socket included. Smoke is caused by poor ignition source. Glow plug could be bad or dirty. A small piece of emery cloth can clean it up. You also need to clean the hole where the screen is installed before reinstalling with the tool. You need to make sure it is installed completely so the glow plug does not damage it when installed.

To clean the blast tube (when sooted up ) I use a propane torch and place in blast tube and cook for a while then I use compressed air while still hot to blast in it to super heat the ambers still in blast tube. I then wash it with some strong detergent and blow out. The other thing to look for is the disc in blast tube ...it is not secured and may have shifted in the tube so ck it also make sure it is all the way out and on the ridge stop in tube . I have also found that the fan is an issue with these heaters and the problem is the air gap to the hall effect magnets. I just take a hammer and tap the fan rotor in a little and usually solves the issue . Hope this helps someone .

Soot / carbon build up in heater. If you can't burn it out on High, which is unlikely, you'll have to take it apart and clean. Always run on high for a couple minutes before you turn it off when you use the heater.

Seven , The white smoke tells you , your grow pin is working, because the glow pin is heating up the burn chamber and the fuel pump is working because you can here it pulsing. Hover the Flash point is not being reached hence the white smoke, Carbon build up in the burn chamber obsorbes the heat from the glow pin and does not allow the chamber to get up to flash point tempture and fire up the heater. When you strip down the chamber pay good attention to the cleaning the carbon at the top end "the glow pin end". Stay safe Mick.

My new unit started cavitating the fuel in the fuel pump. I could see tiny bubbles exiting the pump but not entering the pump. Ordered a new pump on Amazon and installed. Heater fires right up and cleaned itself right up. When it was funning lean, there was enough soot building up inside the unit that my outlet temps dropped to 110 from 210 fahrenheit. All good now.

Hi Seven! Great to see ya! I've got 4 of these things in service between work trucks and bus. So after my first year, went to start using again similar issues. I bought the same stuff as you. Oh yes one had a fuel pump failure. Tried shopping for that, just bought another for spare. So seems like having an extra while I renovated the other. Also I don't have my note pad with me here, but I tried to write down all the error codes so when I'm not internet connected I'm not completely lost! LOL! My friends all tell me the same as someone else mentioned to execute that purge cycle before completely shutting down. I did keep trying on one unit that smoked and it eventually burned off I guess! John there from Australia video was very helpful. You just keep trying, but I just replaced with new, till I had time to execute the repairs, which left me with spare parts I could not have bought! I sometimes wondered how many would I buy before the point of just getting a Webasto, but looking at reviews on them, they have similair "maintenance" issues. Webasto's controller has better functions/algarthymes for air/fuel mix. Also High Altitude functions. So a lot has gone into it thus the cost. The controllers I've gotten with these Chinese copy diesel heaters and the controllers have been some perfect, some seem like only part of the program works! Such as the "shutdown" or purge cycle. I'm still very thankful someone made these at this price point, it has improved my comfort a lot! But you gotta expect to have to service them! LOL! [Thus two on the bus, so at least I'll have a back up".

They are called box spanners,. if you buy a glow plug off e-bay you get that little box spanner and gauze with it complete with slot on the side, don't forget to clean out the little hole on the side of the glow plug hole while the plug is out, otherwise you will have white smoke coming out because the fuel CANNOT mix with the air to ignite the fuel.

I have a Webasto gas heater, and if I don't run it for a while it keeps shutting down on me until it gets gas then it starts up and runs perfect. I didn't start it for almost three months during the summer ( I know you're supposed to start it at least once a month and let it run full blast for at 30 minutes to clean it out) but it stopped on me 6 times then it started running. I don't recall if there was smoke though.
@corborst4872
@corborst4872 2 жыл бұрын
The not starting up/white smoke is an indicator that there is soot build-up near the glowplug, I figured out that there is a tiny 3mm hole next to the glowplug that let air in to help combustion/Ignition at startup. I cleaned mine 2 times but overlooked this tiny hole, and suprise surprise it still didn't work and wouldn't start up, after the third time I discovered the tiny hole, unclogged it and it would start right up without any smoke or delay. It was not the glowplug nor the little gasification screen inside the unit where the glowplug sits, just the tiny hole. You have to open the unit up to see the hole.

It is flooded with diesel. I had the same issue and was getting an E-10 code. What happens is if it doesn't fire up the first time then there is unburned fuel in there then when you try it again the pump comes on putting more fuel in further flooding it. Here is the fix : remove the retainer clip from the fuel pump wiring connector but do not unplug it just yet or you will get a fuel pump error, now start it as usual once you hear the pump start pumping unplug it, let the heater run, listen, you will eventually hear it fire wait another 10 seconds to let it burn off the excess fuel then plug the fuel pump back in. Run the heater on high for at least 10 minutes to clear out the soot. It should run normally now. If not you will have to repeat the process.

1. bad glow plug. 2. back pressure issues due to wind (i heard that back pressure issues can be caused by having the exhaust pipe angled such that water builds up in the pipe causing problems). you can disconnect the exhaust pipe from the unit and if starts ok then it probably something blocking the exhaust. 3. bad fuel or blocked fuel line or failing fuel pump. 4 bad voltage (possible that you have a weak battery where it will show 12 volts under no load but crashes to like 9 or 10 when under load). charge battery or replace battery

I have no experience with a heater like this. I would be sure nothing has obstructed the air intake from outside. And I suspect the entire inside of the burn chamber is clogged with soot build up. Uninstall it and take it completely apart and clean the inside. If that is smoke, the glow plug is working. But shouldn’t there be more volume of air blowing from the exhaust? Broken fan or air clog somehow.

We took the unit out to have a good look at it and can't get to the glow plug. The heater was working fine but now I turn it on and I can hear the fan for a few minutes then it stops. Any suggestion would be a help.

@@MrGreedam What's up, and hello! Did prime the fuel lines again? What code if any coming up? If their no code right now it almost sounds like no fuel getting to it. What elevation are you at? Does your fuel tank have a breather hole? If not unscrew your filler cap for now until it starts.

@@MrGreedam There are two ways to get the glow plug out. First, do you have the right tool? If not you'll have to take the unit apart, but not the whole thing; motherboard, and the fan unit itself, four bolts, then you'll see the glow plug and can use a metric wrench.

On a diesel engine you test the glow plugs my measuring the resistance of the plug. Set your meter to ohms and measure across the two wires going to the glow plug. The service data should show the proper value, or you can measure a known good. I also really doubt that finger tight is what you are looking for either.

. I found my exhaust smokeing because I had air building up in the line raise unit higher than the pump . fuel will have to pump up hill. Not level ..All uphill from pump onwards . And start it up on the lowest Hz 1.0 for 5 minutes untill fully going hot .. With a really good battery start truck and give it 14 volts.... Voltage might be good untill you load up a crap battery with the glow plug and it fails to start.

I've had a similar problem. It ignites and it starts to ignite and then it goes out. Then every now and then it works. I'm about to go and investigate. I'm going to investigate my fuel supply I'm going to investigate the little screen on the intake of the pump. I had a former heater and I would add compressed air into the intake and then it would ignite and heat then eventually decrease and eventually it would die. I replace the heater with a new heater but did not replace any other parts. Now it seems to be doing similar things. I'm also going to add fresh fuel. The fuel I had was from last year. I suspect it is a fuel issue just maybe a voltage issue. I'm going to check my whole fuel line to make sure it's all airtight. And also the intake part of the fuel in the tank. I have cleaned the screen and breathing orifice multiple times previously on the previous heater. This new heater has not work properly yet just randomly it works

Surprised you didn't buy a glow plug, faulty plug likely cause of excessive soot, and failure to heat the fuel enough to burn correctly

It's not getting fuel. The cap on the fuel tank has a plastic inner that creates a vacuum, take it off or make a hole in the cap.

7, That's not smoke, it's diesel fuel vapor. Your not getting ignition. For whatever reason the controller is telling you it does not have enough volts to spark the fuel with the fan & glow plug & controller all using power. Check the heater supply wiring. It may have corroded or is dislodged or.... !
@SevenWanderstheWorld

we've done multiple voltage tests and voltage directly at the unit and with direct wires from bus bars are good. but believe you are correct it is not igniting for whatever reason and there is excess gunk in the area near the glow plug. maybe dirty fuel causing the screen to be plugged and gunk on the glow plug

Mine was blowing cold air before shutting down.. got on my tits. I bought another for £100. Took the old one out. Put on a stand, connected and fired it up.. at the same time spraying Easy start into the air intake.. ooooww it loved it, fired up, blew a load of black shit out, then carried on for an hour, running very clean, great heat and no smoke. Job sorted. Tested again later, perfect running no faults. Think the glow plug must have been caked in sut.

@@SevenWanderstheWorld Yes, a glow plug isn't the same as a spark plug, although both have a resistor built into it, but the resistor in glow plug is made to get a lot hotter I think, and may have partial failure or a full failure. Yours seems partial.
