The +ve TX phase of the RS-422 signal can be used as the RS-232 TX line, however, you must route the TX to the RX of the other port. You need not connect the -ve phase of the RS-422 signal to anything, just leave it disconnected. Remember DCE and DTE are your friends with serial communications protocols!

Nice! I ran into similar issues when trying to get mine connected to a modern computer, then I realized that I had read the pinout of the serial cable backwards and was connecting TX to TX, etc. Oops. Rewired the custom cord, plugged it in, and it worked right away! (I've heard that I'm not alone in this mistake.) I'm not saying that was your issue with the RS-422 cable, but it was mine. I'm glad you got it working with the USB to TTL serial adapter! 🙂

I think in the old days they used solder to protect the pins because gold wasn't that common, ie, it was more expensive. I remember ISA cards with solder edge connectors.
@bikeforever2016

Solder (leaded) is also soft compared to the connector parts. Each extraction and insertion removes a layer of solder, exposing a new piece to make a new conecttion.

The RESET button on the NABU doesn't work the same as on a PC. It just sends the reset signal to the CPU, it does not reset the entire computer. Always use the power button on the NABU to do a proper reset.

The Arctic Adventure fail may just have been a glitch. I'll try to find some time to test the system more extensively. I'd love to do some more tests with the RS422, but I kinda ran out of things to try
@thebishtable
@thebishtable 6 ай бұрын
Just a wild guess, but I've seen certain UARTs struggle with non-standard baud rates. The UART in the RS422 adapter you were using may be one of those. You could try measuring the pulse width of the of the TX (from the PC) and compare it to the pulse width of the signal from the NABU and make sure they are close. If that doesn't, try flipping +/- on the RS422 lines. :)
@Epictronics1
@Epictronics1 6 ай бұрын
Thanks. I have tired to flip the +/-. I have an idea on how to test if the RS422 cable can handle the weird baud rate

From watching other Nabu videos, some folks have had issues with how their adapters deal with handshaking settings. RS422 doesn't have hardware handshaking, but the PC thinks its talking to an RS232 port which does have hardware handshaking. Some adapters just pretend the handshaking is always saying "go", while others might require a setting to do that. Not sure if the server software is dealing with this.
@ovalteen4404
@ovalteen4404 6 ай бұрын
As far as I can tell, 422 doesn't have any start/stop bits. At least, every site I look doesn't mention one. I think that a differential signal of 0V is considered to be "not sending". Once it goes to differential signals, it would seem that all bits are significant. I think the same is true for USB, but with the difference that 1's indicate toggle and too many of the same bit require a stuffed bit for clocking.

It's a shame this one didn't just work out of the box. @nickwallette6201

I think it's partly its obscurity. This whole concept was quite an undertaking, actually got funded and rolled out to subscribers, and then ... vanished. About 40 years later, a warehouse of them is found, still brand new in box. This weird, quirky project featuring a computer nobody's heard of... it's a neat story. It hit the popular retro channels, and spread like wildfire. I got one because I thought, hey this could be fun to develop for. It's got a really nice keyboard, a solid-state storage system (network interface), and an architecture based on parts that are pretty well documented. Could be fun! Also, I'm experimenting with cable head-end stuff, so it's kind of up my alley.

@@Epictronics1 Yeah it's not cheap, but keep in mind there is only 7.35ml of deoxit in a 5oz spray can. There is 25ml in the D100l-25C bottle. It works out to $2.31/ml for the D5S and $1.20/ml for the D100L-25C. You use a lot less as well and you have less of a mess when you are done.
