50 years ago I fished with my dad on rivers in British Columbia Vetter, Chehalis, Squamish. And many more all the steelhead in those days were wild NO HATCHERIES some times we ended 1/4 to 1/2 miles down river, it took two people to handle them! 😊 those days are long gone in reality BUT I have every memory! 🥰. Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzfaq.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

Never cared for fishing much, but I am totally into catching everything I can. You can have your days out lounging with friends on boats, give me the river, and trout as big as buildings, like you guys are catching today. Great video. Always heard that New Zealand had great fishing. Would love to give it a go (bucket list trip). Thought you were a little crazy crossing the river three times fighting the current and not tripping over rocks and holes. Now that’s dedication. Cheers from Canada.

@@Skiddlescout I’m over in the Appalachians and I’ve found a size 8 black wooly bugger or size 8 olive slumpbuster are both really productive streamers for all sizes of trout, but for targeting fish over 16” I’d go with a Barely Legal in olive/white or a small sex dungeon in tan or olive

Use the rod tip to impart action on the streamer, not a strip. It creates a pretty different action on the fly. Those rod tip twitches are often what it takes to get a full commitment. Because of the way it makes the fly rise and fall in the current, it appears injured or fleeing so it will sometimes induce a chase response. When you're stripping, it's more floating in the current. Are you using a full sink or intermediate line? It also looks like you may not be getting down to depth with the streamers, remember, smaller baitfish can't always hold that high in the water column because they are not strong enough to fight current that high in the column. So, full sink or intermediate would help get to where those size of fish inhabit. A+ content!!

I’d agree on depth on that, that water undercuts heavily. I’d go a 5ft poly leader, I love my full sink lines but I’d rather lift a dry line from height as he is from that hole.

You don’t impart action on flies. The point is for it to resemble an insect dead and floating downstream, any action will make it look unnatural. If you’re using a fly that mimics something like a small fish or an aquatic insect then yes, but the majority of flies you want it to follow the current naturally like the food they normally eat and that food doesn’t move on it’s own.

Using a wet fly (soft hackle or prince nymph) or a smaller streamer/leech pattern as a trailer off the streamer always entices a strike when the fish are chasing like that for me. They love the bigger fly, then see the smaller trailing fly and slam that one. I like to contrast the colors, but occasionally that puts them off. Sick vid!
