The main "issue" with hobby painting is that most hobbyists don't get to learn true artistic concepts. They can learn the "how to", but not "why" it works. Congratulations, you've managed to teach my fist two semesters of a BFA to thousands! You rock, man! Just a great VISUAL demonstration without all of the art jargon I had to learn with it. Thank you!

For those who discovers contrasts or certain contrast in the video there is 3 squares to show the different contrast but the one in the middle is about two contrasts (the green and red one, he starts with cold and hot then speaks about complementary, its two different types of contrast). I read in a book about 4 types of contrasts, the 4 that he speaks but show just 3 squares. So the -light-dark -cold-hot -complementary (opposite in a color wheel, if you know the primary, secondary and more like turquoise you can do it by head, red and yellow makes orange, the 3rd primary is blue, red is the complementary of yellow and blue so green, between green and blue you have turquoise, the complementary is between the complamentaries of blue and green so between orange and red so a redish orange) The 4th is saturation, the exemple he gives before speaking of it while speaking of cold and hot with the grey and orange bust is saturation contrast, take one satured color better for small details with a unsatured color like a bluish grey, if with bluish grey you use orange for details you also have a got cold and a complementary contrast. You can have more contrasts like metalic - non metalic, soft transition - hard transition or textures, etc

This is the key to painting. You can literally not smooth anything, if you learn how to have proper light and shadow placements your miniature will look outstanding from a normal distance away. Thank you
@Slanderbot

Another reason many lack contrast and other similar aspects of painting in their works is because generally if you were to paint an object in real life, like a dresser, you just paint it a single color, and the lighting provides the shadows/highlights naturally. Whereas in scaled-down minis we as artists bake in the shadows and highlights ourselves b/c the light doesn't provide the same effect at that scale. I'm glad you bring aspects of this up in your video. This is the most difficult thing for me to get people to understand and I find it holds back the most people in the hobby, especially those who haven't studied fine arts of their own accord prior.

Awesome presentation, I do have a technical question tough, see when I want to be very precise in my painting, I always try to barely load the very tip of my brush, but sometimes the paint dries far too fast, do you suggest mixing my acrylic paints (citadel) with medium instead of water ? because whenever I use water it dilutes it far too much and I'm basically finding myself painting water on my minis
@trovarion
@trovarion 4 жыл бұрын
Using more medium instead og using more water wont change a thing. You need a brush with a bigger reservoir and properly load the brush without overloading it. It needs a bit of practice. I show a lot of this in my layering and glazing video. Hope that helps.

So, I'm looking at doing an army in an eldritch horror theme using desaturated blueish-green (aka go away green) with strong contrast points of magenta into fluorescent pink. Since I want to use the desaturated green to push attention to the pink, how much would you push the value contrast on the green? As of right now, I'm half considering zenithal priming in my intended green, and only focusing on the pink. How much more would you go with "character" models?
@trovarion
@trovarion 4 жыл бұрын
You can basically try anything here, there is no right or wrong. To me having a bit of the torquise show, but being rather dark and then basically highlighting wit magenta and pink sounds fine. How much time you should invest into your characters is up to you :) can always paint them up battleready and the gradually invest more and more work to make them stand out! @@trovarion Thanks for the reply. I wasn't referring to you specifically but rather the internet and KZfaq in general. What I'm seeing a lot are top notch artists, like yourself, using precise zenithal highlighting prior to placing down layers of paint. You're placing the highlights in tightly not scattered. I want to know how you do it (airbrush settings, distance, needle size, etc.) and what is the thought process you go through when you zenithal highlight. Also, are you spraying the highlights on or painting them on? The only information out there right now on zenithal is the basic spray from the top then the side angle then sideways which is generic and doesn't lead to a good result.

@@arrinstoner thanks for explaining! It's actually interesting because i find zenital priming and all related aspects very overrated, other than giving beginners an idea about where to place highlights. For contrast you need to use the glaze technique? I am new painting and i am watching allot of videos
@trovarion
@trovarion 4 жыл бұрын
Contrast means you need bright and dark areas on your mini. You can achieve that with a lot of different techniques. Glazing is just tge process of applying thin layers of colors. You can use it to both shade and highlight your minis. But you could also use layers, washes and drybrushing, stippling, etc. Up to you!

Technique is nice but a mini vmcan look great with little technique. I see minis all the time that look really good but when you zoom in they're kinda janky. They still look good though

for the warm/cold contrast i'm familiar with using colder colors as shades for warm colors, but could you use warm colors to highlight cold colors? like if you have a miniature with blue cloths, could your highest highlight have a little yellow or orange?
@trovarion
@trovarion 4 жыл бұрын
yes, definitely! Some other example of this would be to paint gold NMM, which is typically warm colors, because of all the yellow and browns, right? you can add a little blue to your last highlight to make that highlight stand out more. Just experiment and have fun :) you can always dial it back and go over the warm highlight with a cool one if you don't like it.

this is a good video, but i have to disagree that this is the single biggest mistake. it might be for more advanced painters, but not for more beginner levels. i'd argue that over highlighting (edges mostly) is a more common and easily rectified mistake.
