Fun facts: - Ajax and Achilles were cousins. - Ajax fought Hector in a Duel, twice. And in both occasions were draw. After the first duel they exchange gifts and Ajax got Hector's sword. - Ajax was more of a Defensive warrior. He single handily defended many Troyans attacks to burn Greek Ships. - Ajax fights with a great shield and he throw big rocks. One of them almost killed Hector... He did not use a warhammer (which is waaay cooler) - Ajax fights with his younger brother who is proficient with a bow and covers Ajax. - Ajax survived the Troyan war and he is the one who retrieved the dead body of Achilles and brought him home. - Achilles possesses a magic armor which many warrior wanted. Ajax should get the armor but Odysseus was a better orator and convince the gods to give him the armor. - Ajax got so mad with shame that he killed himself with hector sword over Achilles armor. - Ajax turns into a household detergent. lol

Tefkros the son of Telamon, heir of the throne of Salamis, the most skillful bowman of the Trojan war was the older brother of Ajax. After the war he was punished from his father, because he had promised him to protect his younger brother. He was expelled from Salamis because Ajax committed suicide. After an oracle of Delphi he went to the southeastern coast of Cyprus where he built the Kingdom of Salamis after his homeland

Glad to see this comment. The whole movie while entertaining is riddled with inaccuracies. Menelaus dies in the movie but in the book he returns home. Agamemnon survives the war but is later murdered by his wife on the return home. You cover Ajax and Hector well. And then in the fight against Achilles and Hector I love the way they spice it up in the movie but it takes away from Achilles cuz in the book Achilles kills him pretty quickly, it was lent that the two fighters were close, nobody was anywhere near the skill of Achilles. They also totally don’t even have Diomedes in the film but he’s a total badass in the book.
@RGR2155 Жыл бұрын
@Dan Lumo I mean I wouldn’t call it history but I get what you’re saying. At the end of the day they have to make the story screen friendly and while for example in the context of the book, Achilles killing Hector is dramatic, that scene written strictly off the book would be very underwhelming on screen so I get it, that’s why I prefaced my comment by mentioning that the movie is entertaining albeit inaccurate.

Undriel Grenger Hector was not mentally prepared for Achilles. He had just killed his cousin which in the Illiad was his lover. He was stressed and troubled about that. In addition like I said before he was tired and fatigued from previous fights. One night of rest was not going to make up for all that. Achilles was a gifted born killer. It didnt matter for him whether he hadn't fought in a month he was always ready to go. He is damn near a war God. The fight between the two would have been more of a challenge for Achilles had it happened at their first meeting at Apolos temple when Hector was eager to battle him. It would have been even more of a challenge if the person in his armor was really Achilles when his cousin was killed.

What makes this scene kind of funny in the Iliad is that both of them actually survive this fight, the duel having been called off by Zeus, and then later send each other gifts as a pact of friendship. I can't help but find that both hilarious and a little admirable. It's like "Hey, you did a very good job at trying to kill me, here's some gifts, let's be bros." Neither Ajax nor Hector could gain the upper hand in the fight though, and eventually heralds called an end to hostility, at which point the two heroes exchanged gifts, Ajax presenting Hector with a sword belt, and Hector giving Ajax a sword. Well, I mean by our modern movie standards, it would be silly to do a fight in the manner that Homer (or whoever actually wrote the Iliad) presented it. I mean just imagine them spending like half an hour of movie on a fight, just to then both of the fighters be like: "Hey man, it's like the dusk. Shall we call the day? It was a good fight. I like how the heroes are depicted in a somewhat realistic manner. Ajax, Hector of Troy, Achilles... They are humans, no magic bullshit, but they are just superior in some aspects, that could make people talk of them in such a manner that they become legend with time. Ajax is just a huge dude, I am pretty sure monsters of men like that did bring terror to battefields back then. Hector is just a strong, technical and courageous man with a lot of experience. Achille is a little OP, but maybe he could have been the mike tyson of his age. Someone who is just good at what he is doing. You see that a lot in warfare and fighting sports. Every man can fight and learn how to fight, but some people just have it in their blood

A lot of people are saying this scene is bullshit because when Hector and Ajax fought in the Illiad it was actually Ajax who dished out the worst of it, although the fight lasted all day without a foreseeable end in sight so it was called off come nightfall and ruled a draw, with both fighters imparting a gift to each other out of respect. However, a lot of you seem to forget that Hector and Ajax actually fought twice in the Illiad, and their second fight took place during a battle between the Trojans and the Greeks - much like you see here. Their second fight was fierce and largely a stalemate - much like you see here. However, in the Illiad, Hector did eventually get the best of Ajax by breaking his spear - much like you see Hector eventually best Ajax here except he kills him instead of disarming him. In the Illiad, Ajax called a retreat after being disarmed since he couldn't fight Hector bare handed and his men were being mowed down by Troy's archers. I'm pretty sure this scene is based on their second fight and while it may still not be 100% inaccurate, it makes a lot more sense when you look at it this way.

No, they actually fought thrice in the Iliad, and the only time Hector got close to winning was when he was aided immensely by Zeus himself. In their first duel, which both the Achaeans and Trojans beheld without interfering since it was an arranged one on one battle, Ajax and Hector were ultimately interrupted before they could swing swords at each other but it was Ajax that wounded Hector with his spear prior to all that, not vice versa. In their second duel at the Achaean ships, Ajax knocked Hector unconscious with a big rock and Trojans had to carry him away from the field of battle in order to save him from being finished off. When Hector finally woke up after all that mess, Apollo, on the orders of Zeus, bestowed him with an indomitable strength which he used to get the upper hand in their third encounter - the one you mentioned. You're welcome.

Odysseus won with the help of Athena, who also clouded Ajax' mind, forcing him into slaughtering a lot of lifestock (whom he believed were the Achaean leaders according to some interpretations.) Shamed by this, Ajax commited suicide by his own sword. Later, when Odysseus visits the Underworld, he meets Ajax' soul and regrets about his victory, losing such a great warrior. Achilles was also a true hero. Talent without skill is nothing - Achilles was gifted as an immortal, but he was also the greatest warrior of the Trojan War. Being immortal in Greek mythology did not inherently mean you were extremely strong. For most heroes such as Heracles, it was in fact the bloodline of the gods that gave them both immortality and strength. However, immortality did not inherently mean they were superior to the rest - Theseus, despite being immortal due to being the son of Poseidon, nonetheless had to make heavy efforts to even hold a candle to Heracles. And even then, he was so far away from ever being as great.

Everyone is giving his or her opinion of each warrior's fighting prowess. But Homer provides us with a ranking if you read between the lines of his writing. I'm basing the following on Homer not on Brad Pitt's flawed movie. FIRST TIER: (supernatural) Achilles. Achilles is in a league of his own. In one way, he is like the incredible Hulk in that the angrier he gets the deadlier he gets. He doesn't have super strength but rather invulnerability in battle. When pissed off, he goes berserk. When you combine his hot temper with being impervious to attack (except in his heel) it is no wonder that the Trojans run from him. SECOND TIER: (extraordinary) Diomedes, Ajax, Hector, Odysseus. These four are as formidable as warriors can get without having supernatural ability. Some argue that Diomedes is the 2nd best fighter after Achilles. others say it is Ajax (who like Achilles had a ferocious temper). Hector briefly faces off against Diomedes but it's a draw. Hector also has a duel with Ajax but again it's inconclusive. Ajax has a wrestling match with Odysseus. Even though Ajax is taller and has a longer reach, Odysseus is pretty strong and the match is also a draw. Conclusion: Homer indicates in so many words that these four heroes are more or less equal in fighting ability. THIRD TIER: (above average) Aeneas, Patroklos, Ajax (the lesser) Menelaus. Aeneas is an excellent fighter but not quite a match for anyone in the above tier. At different times, he is almost killed by Diomedes and Achilles and just barely escapes. He is a much deadlier fighter in Virgil's book than he is in the Illiad. That indicates that he either became a more proficient warrior with time or that he had more ferocious opponents during the Trojan war. Patroklos was also an excellent fighter but not a match for Hector. Ajax (the lesser) was not as strong as the bigger Ajax but he was excellent with a lance and with a bow and arrow. Menelaus killed 8 men and almost killed Paris so he's no cream puff either. FOURTH TIER: (average) Paris, Troilus. These two are only average fighters. That is not to say that they were wimps. Just not exceptional. Paris true skills were in the bedroom. He was a lover not a fighter. But although he was only average in sword fighting, he was a damn good archer. And almost as cunning as Odysseus. As for Troilus, there doesn't seem to be anything exceptional about him. He has the same problem as Paris. He thinks too much of love to be a great fighter. Cannot take his mind off of Criseyde.
@HaNsWiDjAjA9 жыл бұрын
toussaintf1 I think you have got it together quite well. However didn't Diomedes almost kill Hector twice, being prevented from doing so the first time only by Zeus, and the second time when Paris shot him in the foot? And wasn't he described by Helenus the seer as "the mightiest of the Greeks", "unrivaled in power", even above Achilles? Didn't he also beat Ajax during Patroclus' funeral games? And wounded both the god of war and the goddess of love with Athena's aid? It's truly a pity that he was rarely mentioned in any adaptation of Troy. Although I guess Homer himself did say that after Achilles, Ajax was the mightiest fighting man ;)

John Huang Homer praised everyone. Ajax was the mightiest because for those ages he was tall (probably 6 foot and maybe shorter). Homer mentions in a rhapsody that Ajax was the second best and sometimes mentions in another rhapsody that Hector or Diomedes were the second best. Only Achilles as a fighter was above everyone.

The film doesnt make it clear but Ajax is actually a very important character in Greek mythology. He was very near invincible and was also close to Achilles, which is why Achilles was so angry at Ajax's defeat. Hector was really second only to Achilles in combat skill. The movie portrays him as somewhat of a weakling, when he really wasn't. Achilles was unable to be seriously harmed except upon his "achilles" heel.
@shramanamondal46242 жыл бұрын
Finally someone acknowledges Hector's skill. I'm tired of the comments like Hector was no where near Achilles, Achilles could have killed him by one shot etc. Seriously Hector was way more badass in the books. And although Eric Bana did an excellent job they somehow made Hector's movements clumsy to depict him as a less fine warrior.

I believe you are underestimating the skill of both Hector and Ajax. There was nothing clumsy about Hector in his duel with Achilles, his skill was exceptional. Ajax went mad toward the end of the war and fell on his own spear. Either suicide or just a moment of madness. War can make men mad. It was a 10 year war. (Imagine having PTSD after 1 year and keep fighting for another 9 with it). It was a long time after they lost Achilles. He never made it back to Greece. He was older than Achilles by a couple of years, trained with him at childhood, and received the same education. It was just Ajax and Achilles. No other kids were there. They were taught by the same man. Forgot his name. Ajax was a giant. Even as a kid, he was bigger than anyone else. I love how this comment section is full of people with no knowledge about Ancient Greek society or the Iliad, but still want to judge the characters and the plot thinking that this film is the Iliad itself. No, the Iliad is not about the fall of Troy, it is about Achilles' anger (as the very first line states) and the core content of the poem is the difference between Hector, who is a grown man, kills to protect his city, a good father and the true hero, and Achilles, an immature boy who likes killing for the pleasure of it and doesn't care about his son (yes, he has a son). In the end, after killing Hector, Achilles understands what it means to be a man while talking to Priam; that's the true message of the story.
