Episode Description:
As the decade drew to a close, the pages of guitar magazines swelled with an eclectic palette of colors: heavy metal heroes and prog fantasists were now joined by the hometown hues of country and bluegrass. David Lee Roth built an MTV juggernaut around a music school alumnus. And an instrumental guitar solo by an underground fusion artist from Texas would eventually score a top-5 billboard hit and a Grammy. The limelight was as bright as ever, but the set design was no longer neon.
Somewhere in the distance, beyond the smoke machines and the flaming gongs, we felt the first muted tremors of change. The message was clear: adapt.

@troygrady

7dayspking I've never thought about what part of the world these guys come from. But since the show is autobiographical, we mostly discuss who I knew when I was growing up in the '80s. That's why we focus on the players that we do. However I've interviewed a variety of jazz and fusion players like Mike Stern, Frank Gambale, and so on, and these were intended for later seasons of the show. We do have some Stern material right here on the channel, and a whole pack of his interview that you can download with tab / slow motion.

Haha, when I was a kid, I was obsessed with guitar like you were (am/are of course :D) I was grounded and it was like a friday night, so I went to bed really early. It was like 11pm, and my dad comes upstairs and says "I want you to come watch this". Sure enough, it was Eric Johnson. I had NEVER heard of him, and I was obsessed with yngwie, so I was like "oh neat, another guitarist... *yawn*" I read "Austin City Limits" on the screen, and was like "wtf is this crap?".... This goon comes out wearing what looked like a high school band uniform (jokes on me, it was his high school band uniform haha).... he started to play, and after about 30 seconds I was HOOKED. I just stared at the screen the whole concert without even blinking haha. It was a cool experience, and one of my few good memories i have of my dad as a kid.

These are really incredible videos you are making, I appreciate it a lot. I was playing in a band in the 70s when I first heard EJ at a club in San Marcos, and told everyone that there was an alien playing guitar. All of us pickers in Houston used to get off of our last set and rush to hear him when he played in town, there were no recordings of him then except a solo on Christopher Cross' album, his own first album was tied up in litigation (7 Worlds). We would just look at each other and laugh, shaking our heads, and leave humbled at the experience and knowing we had seen something that was beyond special. lol He was on FIRE.

I was trapped and I needed a way out...That phrase sums up my cumulative guitar playing experience over the past 3 decades! No matter how well you learn one style or one aspect of guitar playing there is another one right around the corner that is even harder to grasp and more intimidating. That is both the beauty and the folly of guitar. I love it!

Love that you put Brian Setzer on the interstate sign! What a seldom recognized hero. UNBELIEVABLE MOTION GRAPHICS!!! Was listening to "Star Licks" and accompanying tablature in the 80's/90's. Evidently many us were listening to your favorite albums as well - but with no hope of playing them. While I could play Yngwie due to brute force - watching your analysis is WOW!! But sometimes having the tablature was no help - Night Ranger or Stevie Ray Vaughn - couldn't get them fast no matter how much I tried. Now that Troy has told us, I know why ...

Troy, there must be literally millions of us who went through the same thing around the world!! Equal measure of lust for technique and despair at how others could play so cleanly/musically and proficiently. Your videos are really like a mirror to my years in the 80's!! I always knew there was a 'code' but the relentless hours of practise, lack of tuition that brought real results had me quit time and time again. Your shows at least show I was not alone - a very confusing yet inspiring time in my life. Damn you Yngwie, Steve and Eddie!!

First, Troy, I feel we are kindred spirits. Same-ish age, veterans of the "shred" years. Hell, even our tastes are the same. Love the same albums, even the same cuts (Now Your Ships Are Burned...hell yeah!). Thank you for demystifying the most maddening thing about alternate picking, which is the confusion one experiences upon using 3 note patterns. I never once considered that, just a student of BACK FORTH BACK FORTH. Dragging that fourth note to the next string is brilliant, and now obvious. Finding it very tough to break 30 years of back n forth, but I'm starting to get it.

the other speed increase is picking 2 notes and not picking/legato the third(coffee break). i just tried this and my speed suddenly increased exponentially,thanks troy. sometimes the simple things are the ones that escape us,and you are right about there being very few GOOD/FUN methods of learning in the 80's other than freestyle jamming.that gets old after a short time.my friends and i took some time to learn how to end a song properly,they went on forever at times,lol.i had a 90 minute jam tape full and it had 5 songs on it.

Got bounced on here from Ben Eller's channel looking for picking techniques and get a trip down memory lane as a bonus. Great series! I'm just glad I'm not the only one who was unimpressed by the post Roth era Van Halen. I thought 5150 was a good album (still do, and it was the first I bought by Van Halen) and in an interview EVH said they had started writing it when Dave was still in the band. IMO that shows quite clearly with the following albums. They made a big thing about not having top 10 hits with DLR and not having No 1 albums before but they had slipped into soft rock and I stopped rushing out to buy each new album. By comparison, DLR first 2 solo were both great, albeit following a similar vein, but with MORE guitar.

Another thing I noticed was that Eric Johnson also used a hybrid picking style as well in certain areas where he'd use his middle ring and or pinky fingers to catch the lower strings, and then some picking of chords near the base of the neck, or at least it seemed that way. Am I wrong on this?

Which part of this series do we actually getting into building technique?
@troygrady
@troygrady 11 ай бұрын
This series isn't strictly intended to be instructional, but when we released episode 9, "Get Down For The Upstroke", it revealed some technical insights that changed the world a little bit.

Hey Troy how would you describe steve's picking technique? Is he a 1way pickslanter who forces upstrokes or is he a 2way pickslanter ? it seems like he groups every lick up to even numbers so i would guess he uses 1wps
@troygrady
@troygrady 10 жыл бұрын
You nailed it -- 1wps with upstrokes and legato. With one small addition -- he will occasionally switch strings after downstrokes while ascending. You can see this in the Elephant Gun lick in the Vai lesson, for example. It's a tendency I call "third element" picking and we'll talk about this more specifically in his upcoming episode of the show.

5150 is probably Van Halens' 2nd best album, behind VH 1 of course.

Yeah, Van Halen was melting heavily through Diver Down, and after that I never bought another album. Women & Children First, VH1, VH2, Fair Warning. Those are the only albums that Van Halen ever put out. No idea who was on the rest lol. They just lost all the 'edge' that made them cool.

This is cool ,it's almost like what my theory has always been,the east coast view of 80's metal ,when it was really taking place in the west(and I know ,I was right in the middle of it,born in Burbank right next to Randy Rhoads house and up the street from where Van Halen rehearsed,he has a thing for my Mom so,....) . The videos are cool BUT,dismissing Randy's HUGE influence and then as you go away from ,well fact's and more opinion ,the videos have a declining viewership then the previous video. Nicely done and good idea ,but this is your story and if I made it ,it would have been totally different! But,it is interesting! Very cool!
