A fellow I knew made a small fortune forty years ago in Illinois when he took out a rail line for a trail walk. His bid was nominal but he sold the rails, the ties, the spikes and what he said in some places was 20 foot deep in ballast! It was an old line and they just kept dumping more.

Why does the train not turn on its crossing lights at 0:53?. I thought when the horn and bell started up on a SD 40, the crossing lights started to flash automatically. Also, at 10:28 what does 55/50 yellow sign mean? Is it a mile marker or a grade sign? Lastly, at 11:00 they lat gravel first and then the ties??

What is the relationship with BNSF Locomotive moving CSX Gravel Cars
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 6 жыл бұрын
BNSF's locomotives are just roaming CSX. The Class Ones let their power float around, and they keep track of the time their power spends "abroad". Most of the time between railroad cancels out, otherwise they pay each other for the excess. Fairly common occurrence. This was still a CSX train with a CSX crew working on CSX tracks.

Explain to me one detail: the opening of the hatches is given by electric drive? The energy comes from solar panels or locos?
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 7 жыл бұрын
Solar panels.
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 7 жыл бұрын
Freight locomotives aren't setup to give aux power, they only supply air. Hence the panels. AFAIK, the panels control the computer, and I think the dumper mechanicals themselves are pneumatic, fed off the main air supply, but I'm not certain on the last part. It's possible it's all electric fed off those panels, seeing as how they probably only dump a couple times a month at most, leaving plenty of time for even a small panel to recharge a large enough battery. Either way, there isn't a real good way to get power from the locomotive consists, so they have the panels.

I would have never thought that they be starting the air compressor with an air starter like that. Seems counter to the purpose at some neophyte level at least. Considering the horsepower required then having a clutch tied to the loco's engines is probably the silliest way to get this most important job done. Separate engine entirely then, learned something new thanks to Florida Panhandle Railfan. And thanks also to Gerald G for asking or I would have remained ignorant for quite a while longer.

How often do they have to lay ballast?
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 5 жыл бұрын
Generally ballast is laid whenever new ties are installed, which is every 5-10 years in most places. Ballast will be dropped more frequently in known trouble spots like in swamps or often around grade crossings or bridges and culverts. These big trains come with the larger program maintenance, while the smaller drops are generally a part of the local regular maintenance routine.

Also, lighting a fuzzee in broad daylight and then dropping it at the crossing appears to be a waste of time, especially since he's standing there. However, I'm sure it's part of the rule book. Railroads let their power run around and they just pay each other back when it happens. Usually a train is running through to another railroad and it is easier just to bill for the "horsepower hours" than switch the power.

Just what is.. the purpose of ballast? Tony 58-year-old Black Air Force VET 🇺🇸
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 5 жыл бұрын
Railroad ballast does 2 primary things: provides lateral and vertical support for the track, and allows for expedited water drainage. Smaller gravels, sand and silt are the enemy of track stabilization because they're weaker and hold water. We have four "Ds" in Civil Engineering: drainage, drainage, drainage and drainage. :)

Two reasons, one it is surprising how ballast will sink into the dirt, as an example we have been putting gravel on our drive way for almost 116 years and every so often the gravel sink out of sight. Second a tie crew is following this train and they need a lot of ballast to prop up the tie and rail.

@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 5 жыл бұрын
Allan Love Jr Over time the track substructure begins to degrade. The underlying rock begins so get broken up, as mud from below seeps to the surface. Ultimately when they go to install new ties, it’s a good time to add new rock to solidify the foundation. You’ve gotta tamp it all anyway, so new rock is typically added before the ties are changed out. It’ll help keep the track in great shape for the next several years. There are three Ds of Civil Engineering: drainage, drainage, and more drainage. Bad rock means bad track almost always.

I like the noise of the bells, although too much is a bit annoying. It is part of the action though, and you can always turn down the volume.
