Thanks for the taking the time to do these demonstrations, Matt. I'm happy to share them to guide others to make more informed decisions. So many of them have jumped on the LED bandwagon because it looks nice.

As someone has already mentioned, a flasher relay that is set up for LEDs would be a better option than adding resistors. On newer Vehicles, that do not have a flasher relay, but instead operate the turning signals and emergency flashers off the BCM, you can simply reprogram the BCM. With a lot of newer Vehicles you can reprogrammed the BCM with a simple OBD2 dongle. You really should never "tap" into a factory wire unless absolutely necessary.

Yes that is also an option, this video was just a guide to help people understand what they are. Thanks for the comment.

On 2006 to 2009 Ford Fusions you have to add a resistor to them cause they use a SJB instead of relays for the turn signals. Also if you add led low beam headlight bulbs you have to add a resistor to cause non of the anti flicker/canbus modules will fix the check headlamp warning message the vehicle gives you every 10 minutes. It sucks cause it’s such a pain in the butt to fix since there is barely any room to do anything by the headlights on these cars.

So I have a 2018 grand Cherokee and switched out the headlight unit to one with LED day time running lights.. the drl had the hyper flash.. that light stays on so I thought it didn't need a resisters
@RetrofitSource

You'll definitely need resistors for DRLs shared with other lights!

In some cases it may be easier to swap out the flashers instead of adding resistors.

What about DRL lights ( like the one in wrangler fender led) does it need a resistor ?
@RetrofitSource
@RetrofitSource Жыл бұрын
Most DRLs do not need resistors unless they're shared with the high beam. DRLs shared with the high beam will need a PWM (pulse width module) to prevent hyper flashing.

I have high powered LEDs from VLEDS for my tail lights that all work fine with no resistors. No hyper flash. The issue I had was with the license plate bulb. Using an LED there, the bulb would work but after some random time it would turn off and take out the rear park lights with it. Then if I turned the light switch off and on everything would work fine again for a while. I solved the issue by inserting a 100ohm, 5W wire axial resistor into the bulb socket with one wire end on the left bulb socket contact and the other wire end on the right bulb socket contact. Then I inserted the bulb into the socket. It fixed the issue. Is the way I installed this resistor a parallel connection or series?

It sounds like you made a parallel connection!

I put led in my reverse lights but now they don't turn off. They have a very dim glow even when the vehicle is turned off. If a resistor isn't needed for reverse lights, what would I need to do to correct the issue?
@RetrofitSource

The lights may not be compatible with your vehicle!

@@RetrofitSource I just put the original halogen in one side and the led on the other. Led adds some brightness and the halogen turns off the circuit. With both LEDs it kept the reverse camera activated and they stayed on very dim. Thought maybe a resistor would help but as stated in your video it wouldn't do what I was thinking. Thanks for the response and all the info y'all provide to us.
