I thought I would make a video for anyone interested in either the Gretsch 5410T Rat Rod guitar, or in upgrading their current bridge to a tru-arc, also, a little look at Pinegrove leather straps.

I appreciate you offering gear tips. I just upgraded a Streamliner with a bone nut, roller bridge, heavier trem spring and a set of TV Jones (Supertron neck and Classic Plus bridge). It brought it to life! It plays amazingly. $300 for the guitar used, $520 for pickups (including parts and luthier) + $220 for the nut, spring, bridge and setup. Total $1040 for a great player that I enjoy as much as my 1990 5120-W Tennessean. So if you can't afford a $2500 Gretsch, anyone can get a good start with a $300 Streamliner that will sound amazing after a few upgrades! Its a good cheap platform that sounds decent stock, especially with some gain. The first upgrade should be the roller bridge or Nico's Tru-Arc bridge to keep it in tune after using the Bigsby. This upgrade can be done without an Aluthier (as Nico just showed us) and bridges are mostly inexpensive.

Sounds good, looks good and probably works well with the Bigsby too..... the bridge base is pinned on that model so you might have minor intonation issues, but I think the type and gauge of strings you use has a big effect on that.

Good timing! I’m looking for a bridge. Found a late 50’s Old Kraftsman archtop to do a low budget rat build up with some spare pickups. My Godin had Lace Alumatone pickups I took out and will install these in the archtop with a used Bigsby so I’ll try out one of those bridges. I just upgraded my Godin to a pair of Lace Deatbucker pickups. Thanks again for your videos. I live in Canada and will be in Arizona Sept 20 to pick up the new / old archtop and hang out in the desert 🌵 for a few months to work on some cool lessons you provided. I’ll order up one of your t-shirts and retire the GnR profile photo soon…

This is ironic. My Gretsch 6118T came with a rocking bridge exactly like the Tru-Arc you just fitted and I'm looking to replace it with a bridge that I can intonate because the guitar just won't play in tune higher up the neck. Currently looking at either a Compton Special compensated bridge or a Graphtec ResoMax NV2 tune-o-matic.

I can see why you might want an adjustable bridge, I have learnt that different guage strings will affect the tension on the bridge and therefore intonation. I feel like it would be less of a problem if the bridge were not pinned!

So, that bridge sounds great but, it's a fixed, or, "pinned" bridge, I'm just concerned about replacing my adjustable tunomatic with a true arc or a common because i'm worried if, for some reason I need to adjust intonation, my bridge is fixed. you seem to have just dropped it in, any issues with intonation? Hi, that's a cool video about the Rat Rod! I have the black one for about two weeks now. I really like the sound and the playability but every time I slightly touch the Bigsby I'am out of tune. Do you have any ideas how to fix that problem?
@DEATHRAYCAT
@DEATHRAYCAT 3 жыл бұрын
It could be a number of things but one thing to check is how the strings have been strung up. If it has too many winds It could cause a problem. it also could be that the nut needs lubricating, but also if you've only had it 2 weeks it may be adjusting to your home still? There are some good threads on the Gretsch forums and some groups on Facebook about how to string up the guitars to avoid tuning issues. It wouldn't hurt to take to a luthier to have it set up professionally, but I know that might be frustrating as you just got the guitar. Another thing to check is that the strings are all straight and evenly spaced between the Bigsby and the bridge. You could also pop some graphite ( from a lead pencil ) in the nut slots and bridge slots to help lubricate the strings. I hope that helps !
@tomstreubel8135
@tomstreubel8135 3 жыл бұрын
@@DEATHRAYCAT Hi Nick, thanks for your advices! I have already tried a few things. The strings have only one winding and I use "Big Bends Nut Sauce" at the nut. I also tried different bridges and as long as I don't use the Bigsby the tuning is really stable. Anyway, somehow I'll get this thing going. Really like your channel, looking forward to see more videos. Greetings Tom
@montag4516
@montag4516 3 жыл бұрын
As mentioned above a bit of lube is often the solution... in the nut slots, on the bridge where the strings rest, and even on the vibrato roller bar where the strings rest. Essentially anywhere the string touches and there could be friction. This is also assuming that your nut strings slots are wide enough to avoid friction or binding. I have a Gretsch Duo Jet Firebird w/vibrato, and with a dab of string lube where needed the strings all stay in tune without issue.

@DEATHRAYCAT
@DEATHRAYCAT 3 жыл бұрын
Hi that’s a good question! I think it depends on your budget, and what kind of other guitars you are used to playing. You will definitely enjoy the rat rod, and for the price it’s amazing. The build is great and it plays really nicely. If you have the extra budget for the 6120 you will notice the difference though. The pickups will be more ‘gretschy’ whether you go for filtertrons / tv Jones or dyna style pick ups. You might find a pro level 6120 nicer to play as well. I would recommend trying all the guitars out that you can if that’s possible, you might just fall in love with one and the answer then becomes a lot easier. My 6120 is the RHH mode with TV Jones classics. There is also the option to mod your rat rod so you could you also find pickups you like and drop them in. Hope that helps 😸

Hi mate does the tru-ark have to be bigsby compensated for me 5420 cheers
@DEATHRAYCAT
@DEATHRAYCAT 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin a ‘bigsby compensated bridge’ is a kind of bridge in itself, those are cool too. Tru-arc bridges can come standard (like a bar, like on my rat rod) or they can be ‘compensated’. Their mode which is compensated is called the ‘serpentune’. It’s up to you whether you want your tru arc compensated or not. When it is compensated it means that the minor adjustments for correct intonations are made in the actual shape of the bridge. Does that make sense? If you look at a photo of a serpentune it might make more sense. Personally to my ears a standard bar bridge is fine but some people prefer the compensated bridges as they are supposed to have better intonation. I have one on my 6120RHH and it’s great but I am also enjoying the standard bar bridge tru arc on my rat rod. I think either would work on your 5420. If you chat to Tim from tru arc, he will help choose the right model. Tell him I said hi ! Hope that helps
