I’ve been a trucker for 15 years. We do encounter many mechanical issues. But to receive 110 years for something that wasn’t your fault is an outrage.

Just the fact that an accident gets you more time than child predators is absurd

And the girl who intentionally killed two people in a crash got like 15 years

You know something is wrong when a trucker that accidentally kills 4 people gets 110 years in prison, and an intentional murderer only gets 20 years.

So he gets more time than actual murders? This is disgusting. This is an unfortunate mistake that deserves some punishment but not punishment to the extreme.

Here in the UK a woman was just given 25 years for torturing and killing a baby. The mother who allowed it to happen was given 8 years. There is such in imbalance of justice in the world.

Edit: His sentence was reduced to 10 years! They took 100 years off his sentence. Thank god for that. Thank god for all the people who saw this injustice and did something. I just watched a video where a woman who knifed a man 100 times til his end got sentenced with 100 hours of community service because "the weed made her do it." What this man was sentenced with- despite being the cause of the ending of 4 people- is completely inhumane. It's cruel and unusual punishment. I hope he got his clemency. I'm gonna have to do some digging...

It’s crazy to think that child predators get a lesser sentence, than someone who didn’t even mean for this to happen. The company needs to be at fault not him.

I don’t like driving near trucks but I respect all truckers who work day & night bringing those precious resources to cities/suburbs for us to live so comfortably and conveniently. I'm sad that lives were lost. However, there's a HUGE difference between accidental vs intentional perpetrator. One has no intention of doing anything wrong, while the other is a threat to society.

He gets more time than people who actually WANT to hurt people?! This is so messed up! This was an unfortunate mistake, and while yes he does deserve time for a series of bad choices, this was too severe.

As a retired firefighter, I had the responsibility of THOROUGHLY CHECKING the firetruck operated and equipment I used before my shift started. ALL DEFECTS were reported and handled immediately. ANY equipment failure was MY SOLE RESPONSIBILITY and MINE ALONE!

My husband is a truck driver and anybody who drives a truck knows your brakes can go out at any time. It can happen to anybody. He does need punishment maybe 5 years and 3 year probation. But 110 years, that’s crazy. I hope he gets a lighter sentence

Im a returned truck driver, my heart goes out for the people whom lost their lives to this tragic accident, the driver lost his brakes, the amount of panic he would surely of been under would have been extreme to say least, it was a tragedy, the driver should never of received such an outrageous sentance of 110 years, if it was intentional yes, but it wasn't, if any he shouldn't have been sentence at all. The judge claims he had no choice, he did he being a judge could and should have overruled the accident based on circumstances. The driver will pay for this mentally for the remainder of his life. This guy is no murderer. It was an accident. RIP to all the people that died that day but it wasn’t malicious. It truly was an accident.

It sounds rough but I watched something about this a few weeks ago. He passed run away truck ramps, kept riding his breaks (which you don't do on a big rig on a grade), stopped a few dozen miles before the incident to call his boss because he was worried about his breaks overheating but continued going. Then I heard, once his breaks gave out he just closed his eyes and hugged the wheel until he crashed. I want to see some corporate responsibility. This guy did not have sufficient training to do the job. He panicked, forgot his training and people died as a result. Who certified him? Who allowed him to get his CDL? Did his boss convince him to keep going when he himself wanted to stop (I hear that's a big issue in trucking)? There needs to be accountability put on the shoulders of the people pulling his strings. They need to evaluate the training program he went through.

Getting any more then 2 years in prison for this is crazy. Getting 110 years is beyond inhumane. Unfortunatly getting these insanely long sentences, sometimes longer then 3 lifetimes, isn't out of the ordinary in the US.

I'm not a truck driver but something similar happened to me and the other driver lost their life. I was found not at fault but let me tell you that the burden I carry is a life sentence. I feel for this man, the burden of taking a life sucks and I can't even imagine doing it while being in prison for life.

Anyone who’s familiar with this case knows the trucking company he works for holds at least 50% of the blame. They pushed a driver with no experience far too hard. Transcripts also show he didn’t want to go over the pass that day.

You can get 110 years for a truck’s brakes failing but only 10 years for intentional planned murder. Make it make sense.

His lawyer will have to appeal. This could take 3 to 5 years plus. But this just shows how flawed the justice system is.

I personally believe him. Some people don’t realize that when your life is in danger, and you know that you’re in imminent danger, you truly go into a state of shock. No matter what you tell your body to do with your mind, your body simply does not respond. I’ve felt this probably twice in my 30 years of being alive. He absolutely should’ve hit the runaway ramp, but I’m willing to bet he was so scared that he wasn’t thinking straight at all. This whole situation is tragic all the way around. If the trucker did not intend to kill someone and his breaks failed I would argue that the worst you should charge him with is with negligence... and that is provided that he failed to maintain his breaks. If his breaks failed for reasons unrelated to negligence he should go free. If he was negligent the sentence should be five years in prison. If someone else was responsible for the breaks the trucker also should not be held accountable and should go free.

Why didn’t he take a plea deal? He thought that the jury would get him off the hook. That means he doesn’t acknowledge his mess up

Why is he in prison at all instead of the truck company responsible for maintaining his truck. It’s like if a planes wheel pops off on landing and crashes do you throw the pilot in prison? Feel like they threw him under the bus to protect the trucking company he worked for.

This is the exact reason I never wanted to go into trucking. So much responsibility and risk, especially if something goes wrong. Big respect for all truckers.

Forensics could even tell that the truck was in poor condition. The brakes were so old that they failed and something went mechanically wrong. The families of the victims didn't even want him to go to jail because even they knew it wasn't his fault. Also, rest in peace to the people who lost their lives. And condolences to their family and friends.

A driver is not to let the truck get out of control.

This wasn't a murderer, this was a horrendous accident that can happen to any truck driver. Even the excuse of "there was a truck stop" doesn't mean you check your brakes to make sure they still work assuming he had no knowledge at that point. Poor guy.

I was a truck driver and I have had my breaks almost fail on me while going down the grape vine north bound. It can happen to any truck driver out there and the judge saying that he passed a runaway truck ramp, well let me tell you what goes through your head when in that situation. You can't say coulda, shoulda, would have. My heart breaks for this driver.

I’m a truck driver myself and after this sentence, I’m going to change my profession. We don’t leave our house in the morning on a mission to kill people! Nowadays it’s too hard for a truck driver to not only keep itself safe, but also watch much harder for other commuters safety, who pretty much, every single one , seems to be on the phone!
