Joe Philpott has an incredible number of miles under his belt and is truly a veteran truck driver. After many years OTR with Knight Transportation hauling Dry Van loads, he's decided to transition into temperature-controlled loads with Knight Refrigerated. Joe describes why he decided to make the change, some of his advice to other drivers, and some of the advantages that make Refrigerated a great option for many professional truck drivers.

Howdy all, This is Joe Philpott. I don’t normally read or leave comments on videos. There was a comment left on this video that indicated I must be a sad n lonely person and my family is a reck because of the years and miles I have driven. People like the one that left that negative comment have no balance in their lives. They are the ones always tearing others down to justify their laziness and bad work ethics. There are very few industries like trucking. It’s not a 8-5 pm job. If you try to live that way Over the Road (OTR) you will become very frustrated and fail. Each day is different and you need to adapt to it. I have had awesome dispatchers and they were very good at connecting the flow of freight for me to have a rhythm that enabled me to plan home time. I was never gone more than 2 weeks, a couple of minor exceptions especially during the recession. The last 15 yrs I have been home every weekend. Years ago Knight worked with me that I was able to coach my sons AYSO Soccer time for 6 years. Practice two nights a week and a game on sat. In 6 yrs of coaching I missed two practices and one game. I also was able to maintain the miles needed to ensure profit revenue on my tractor during the soccer season. If you think of yourself only you won’t succeed out here. With great communication with my team at Knight, and a great family we have had a great life. My wife and I have raised to awesome young men. In the early years we home schooled so I would take them on the road with me and a lot of one on one time. They are both in law enforcement and the kind we can all be proud of. My wife and I have been married 40 yrs. We found a balance and have been very happy. Home time is no different than OTR. You have to plan. Home time that has value not just being there. When I got home we transitioned back into a family. No negative or problem solving right away, but reconnecting. We’ve enjoyed our lives and are thankful for The Knight family creating a place for so many of us to create an income for our families. My wife and I are very happy and have worked hard to achieve this. To have a passion and be able to make money at it, I couldn’t have hoped for more in my life. A high number of drivers quit between 6 months and a year. They never learn how to adapt and communicate with their team. It’s a daily not a one time thing. Two years into this industry was the time I came into my own out here and it’s been a blast ever since through the good and difficult. I pray God will Bless each of you out here! Your safety, your happiness, your family and your income. And in the old school way, Happy Trails and keep the shiny side up. Cheers

Joe I could tell right away from the video that you were a man of great work ethic and pride. Its evident in the way you speak and work. I think Knight should be honored to have someone like you remain loyal for so many years. Life is indeed about balance. Most people could only wish they had the same energy and excitement at their job after 25 years. So I dont think you need to be taking advice from anyone else! You're doing fine on your own bud. Wish you continued success and health! Cheers

Are you working for knight?, I have always heard horror stories about huge carriers like this. Now Knight, swifty swift and some other outfit turned into a monoply.

Of course the 4mil mile guy is going to talk highly of the company. (Theres one at every company). Of course, there's 3 different types of drivers. The ones that love it. The ones that hate it. And the ones in the middle like me that are sort of stuck in between.

@saulsantos3653 it's not real good money at all. To start. Go there get you 8 months and find you someone who pays more. You gotta get experience. I went to crete carrier after 8 months and I'm doing great there. I just got my best check as a truck driver 3723 miles.
