tandem slide lock issue could be that the air valve's are not all the way open, should be a lever in the front of the front axle. make sure is all the way open. 2nd issue could be not enough air in auxiliary trailer air tank, try releasing trailer brakes for 3 mins to build up air in the trailer then set trailer brakes and try to release slide lock.. hope this helps

Air tandems sound like a bad idea

They are nice when they work, especially when you can just pop the trailer brake, they will pop out and you don't have to jump out to pop the pins manually (obviously when you pull the pin to retract them). Though of course, more stuff to break and worry about.
