TRUCKS on a HILL - How an icy hill ruins a German trucker's day.........

It has been snowing for some weeks now and our town ran out of salt. So most smaller roads are quite slippery. The one shown here is no exception, most trucks spin out here. There are three ways of getting out of that. a) reverse down the whole hill b) drive through the road on the left c) manage to get your truck in the LIDL parking lot to the right, which is narrow...and most trucks get stuck in the snowdrifts on the right side of the entrance and the left side of the road.....the day before this was recorded, a truck was stuck there for 30 minutes, but witness someone easily breaking that record.....

Good to see its not just the uk that has ignorant car drivers that just have to squeeze through the tightest gap even tho its obvious the wagon is struggling!!! Btw, if you haven't driven an artic in the snow, don't comment coz you haven't the faintest idea how difficult it can be

Man! I feel for this driver. I've been in this situation similar to this before,and it sucks big time. I saw what the car was trying to do and there was no way it would of worked.But they offered assistance to try and help so hats off to them. At least no damage was done and no body was hurt,so this will be a good truck driving war story for this driver to talk about. Stay safe!

An empty truck is a pain in the arse in snow.. The tractor unit solo, on the other hand is pure bliss.

Where ever that trucker was going, he was late. Thanks for putting that comment on the video about the guys with the Audi. There's WAY too much weight there for that car to even budge that truck.

I was referring to the fact that they have to pay each year 2 times to change the tires from summer to winter and then back to the summer ones. And not everyone has that kind of money, because it is a little expensive.

I don't think a lot of people realise how little traction a truck has on snow.And as for fitting winter tyres and chains if the driver doesn't own the truck he possibly has very little say in how the truck is kitted out.Give the driver a break.

if the truck aint good enaugh for winter land happyness. 1.tell boss, me no drive. boss says drive or find new job. you say ok i drive, call cops and tell them to take a check of ur truck. BOOM police gives your truck no driving untill truck is ok for winter, boss must pay for equipment. problem solved ;)

Normalerweise hat man bei solchen Wetterverhältnissen immer ne Schaufel, Nen Eimer Salz und Ketten dabei, zumindest ist das bei uns in der Firma so, das hilft in solchen Situationen ungemein :D

Bad thing is, there are only allweather tires for trucks of that size, no difference for winter and summer; No saving of money if you only can replace your tires with the same kind. Remember: Heavy trucks are no cars. You can't compare the traction of a truck with that of a small car. Size and weight matters ;)

I kept thinking, where the heck are the cops and sand trucks to help this guy? I towed boats and small equipment from time and to time. And I can tell you, it isn't easy, especially in tight spaces like gas stations and parking lots.

I feel sorry for the poor guy, sometimes shit just doesn't work. Sometime relatively easy situation can become difficult to do, and driving a truck in snow and ice is not easy.

It would have helped the poor truck driver if there had been no other cars or suicidal pedestrians and he was able to take a run up to the hill. To the armchair experts...I doubt you could do any better. As for the trucker. Well at least he didn't end up jacknifing/crashing his lorry etc

As someone who drives in snowy conditions... 2 axle semitrailer trucks are the worst truck to drive in the winter, you get the weight of the trailer a bit forward of your drive wheel which means very little grip. And it doesn't help that the trailer is pushing forward either. I don't think anyone here could have done it, even with speed he would have gotten stuck.

This reminds me of a time a truck couldn't get up a hill in the town I live in.. A middle aged woman in her SUV was sitting behind it beeping her horn. I yelled something at her and she flipped me off then carried on beeping her horn.

Pascal is absolutely right. The times when there were what you call Winter tires is History. And to chain up a Truck is also not the same then doing it on a VW Golf or Polo. I have been in the same Situation when I was surprised by the weather. The drivers usually don´t know where they have to pick up a load until they have dropped their cargo somewhere. That can be hundreds of km away. And why doesn´t LIDL keep his Parking and entrance ICE FREE??

Where was this? Up here in Canada the plow trucks spread a sand/salt mix onto the roads. But some places I think they just plow right? Still, surprised law enforcement didn't get involved and mandate a tow truck. He was stuck there blocking the road for a good while.

How sad!! I feel sorry for the truck driver. The crazy man who wants to press charges cannot even sink into his head what the issue is! He is such an ignorant man who cant help those in dire need of help, who knows what the driver must have been experiencing: a waiting family at home, losing hope, low self esteem... Issues like this should be taken into consideration. After all, we are still humans. Help whenever you can while you still can...Thank you..

Winter tires would have been completely sufficient for this road. Look at the smaller cars, and how they drive up and down without any problem. Or come to our area, and look, what tires most trucks, especially on the highway, have even in winter - you will be frightened of what you see (or angry, if one goes crosswise, and you stand still behind in a huge traffic jam). So, how to help the trucker? Tell him to go and fetch some suitable tires?

I don't drive on ice and snow, I drive 64.5 tonne B-doubles in Australia, but I just wanted to know whether having single or twin drive axles makes any difference, diff-locks and cross-locks a foregone conclusion in the affirmative. See, we don't worry about things like that here. More concern is overheating the truck and pavement melting under the tyres!

I understand that. I live in a cold country, and I own summer and winter tyres. And I change to winter at the winter time, and to summer tyres in the summer. The thing I dont understand is why "not everyone has money to change the tires every year". Is that because you need to buy tyres every year, or cause you need to pay someone to change from summer to winter etc? My tyres last like 5-6 seasons, so I rearly need to buy new tyres, and I swap from summer to winter etc myself... why pay?

Sebst schuld! Hätte er sich Schneeketten montiert, hätte er auch keine Probleme gehabt. Ist zwar shit die zu montieren, aber bei weitem angenehmer als die Show hier (für alle). C95 lässt grüßen!

+Alexander Aleksic Schneeketten macht man in den Alpen drauf am Berg, nicht im Flachland wo der Winterdienst schläft! Immer dieses Fachwissen, mit Schneeketten fahren 20 LKW durch und die Strasse ist ein Feldweg! Da liegt garnicht genug Schnee, für Ketten, ohne das die Strasse des unbeschadet übersteht!

Lauzler Aha, Schneeketten macht man in den Alpen drauf - interessante Theorie. Also braucht man in Schweden, Finnland und Norwegen ja keine Schneeketten, denn die Alpen reichen ja noch nicht bis dorthin??? Ich würde sagen: Schneeketten macht man überall dort drauf wo man merkt, dass Schneefahrbahn ist und, dass man mit dem Achsdruck und den Reifen alleine nicht weiterkommt - egal wo das ist. Dass die Strasse danach wie ein Feldweg aussieht ist egal, dann muss eben der Schneedienst drüber, aber Hauptsache ist, dass man selbst weiter ist. Aber angenommen, er würde die Schneeketten nicht aufziehen, was sollte er denn deiner Meinung nach machen um an Traktion zu gewinnen??? Eventuell noch einmal volltanken, dann hat er Maximal 1200kg mehr am Zugfahrzeug - umladen oder etwas auf die Antriebsachse dazuladen - ist jetzt vielleicht ein bisschen schwierig - auf den Frühling und auf Tauwetter warten - ja, das wäre eine Idee!

Semi ist immer schwierig im Winter auch mit 2 Achsen. Wie Alexander sagt, auf einen Truck gehören Ketten. Manchmal hilft es sogar nur eine zu montieren . Bin jahrelang Schweiz - Schweden gefahren und auch zwischen Frankfurt und Kassel auf der Autobahn Ketten montiert.

Als Autofahrer stellt man es sich leicht vor so ein LKW zu Rangieren aber so leicht sieht es nunmal nicht aus wie man sieht man sollte Respekt haben vor den LKW fahrern die tag täglich sich mühe geben das die Ware auch ankommt als immer nur schimpfen;scheiss LKW ! Sowas kann jeden passieren das man sich verfährt und sich auch noch auf die gute Stimme vom Navi sich verlässt:-)

Looks for me, that the truck has no winter tires, like they often do, to save some money. So, no reason to have any sympathy with the trucker, because he should have known, that one needs winter tires (and sometimes even chains!) in winter, at least, if you go there where these scenes are taken (I live not too far away, as I can see from the car plates, so I know...). As can be see, the cars of the local folks have no problems at all, because they know, how to drive in winter here.

It's obvious that you my friend have little to no experience driving on wet ice, in heavy snow or other winter conditions found in the northern areas of the globe. And don't forget that even if you are American and think you know better there are tires that most of the people who experience snow and ice for up to ten months of the year call winter tires and even Goodyear does it.

Have seen plenty of KZfaq vids like this with un- chained trucks. Have not seen any with chained trucks. game, set and match. This is not a black ice situation in this video- chains would have made a difference.

poor bloke i feel sorry for him im a class 1 driver and i know how quick things can go wrong in the snow people are ignorant to this maybe they wouldnt be if they knew that 95% of the stuff on shelves in stores is delivered by us so are the clothes on there backs and the fuel you put in your car i could go on forever but what im trying to say is rather than give them greif help the poor bloke

Knowing how to control your vehicle has nothing to do with physics and stopping distance in regards to different tires. It is a proven fact winter tires improve handling and stopping.. and in some provinces in Canada they are now the law. Its not a stupid law, it saves lives and can actually save you money should you get into a fender bender without em.

In my experience scania 4x2 4 series are one of the worst for traction even when not snowing. to be fair any truck would struggle here

Er hätte auch Schneeketten auflegen können. Nun weis man nicht ob er keine hatte, zu faul war diese aufzulegen oder es einfach nicht konnte. Und da Lauzer von Fachwissen spricht:: den gehört einfach der Führerschein abgenommen. Was ist wenn ein Rettungswagen oder die Feuerwehr durch muß und der seine Karre nicht aus dem Weg bringt...über Stunden! Ich weis das sich gleich alle LKW-Fahrer aufregen werden, aber es ist euer Job das ihr die Straße nutzt aber nicht den ganzen Verkehr lahmlegt, weil : siehe oben.

He probably didn't have any. Most European trucks drive around without chains, because we rarely need them. In Norway chains is mandatory in the winter season, and I think it's the same in Switzerland and Austria - but I'm not certain about those two. I live in Denmark, and we never use chains - our winter season is pretty short and the roads are pretty good.

The truck only has one axle that is applying power to the ground. That plus 10+ tons of cargo means that there isn't enough traction on the driven wheels to get the lorry moving.
