Trudy Chacon And The Love Story That Was Cut Out Of Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) Explained. A quick comprehensive guide and analysis of the Trudy Chacon played Michelle Rodriguez.
In this breakdown, analysis, reaction and explanation we focus on Trudy's love story with Dr. Norm Spellman, as well as her relationships with Jake Sully, Colonel Miles Rick Quaritch, Dr. Max Patel, Dr. Grace Augustine, Parker Selfridge, Tsu'tey, Corporal Lyle Wainfleet and the rest of the Omaticaya clan. We learn about Trudy working for the RDA (Resources Development Administration) on Pandora and operating the Samson 16, or Maya, or Rogue One... or Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson. Working specifically for the SciOps (The Science Operations) and getting them to places like the Site 26 Link Station in the Hallelujah Mountains. We follow rom her time defending the sky people's Hell's Gate Colony with the other SecOps (The Security Operations) and their AT-99 Scorpions, to her final day on August 23rd 2154.
I use material from deleted scenes, the original script and interviews to help you get the full scope of this character.

Finally someone addressed this in a full video. They completely cut out Norm and Trudy's characters, and while I feel that it worked fine with Trudy since I'll be fully honest, the extra info really doesn't add much for the story itself, Norm's evisceration was a crime. The deleted scenes explain the choices he made, going from nerd to jealous of Jake to genuine, ride-or-die ally that simply can't be drawn from implication alone since even the implication was cut. Of course, I would have also much appreciated Trudy having an extended role beyond "Michelle Rodriguez is a pilot in this one." If someone, whether Cameron or anyone else, decides to release the *full* 4-hour-long cut of the movie, janky PS1 Na'vi animations included, I would still watch the hell out of it.

I think this would have definitely given some good character development to Norm and Trudy. It would have explained why she decided to switch sides and help Jake and his allies, and it would have also given more screentime to Norm. It would have been nice if Trudy survived the crash as well, as they could have gotten married, and their kids could make cameo appearances in Way of the Water. Perhaps Trudy and Norm would become the new administrators of the RDA base on Pandora after the humans were kicked out. It would have only required under 5 minutes of additional screentime, and by shortening some of the exposition scenes at the beginning, it wouldn't have even required the runtime to be longer.

Norm's avatar didn't die, he's seen using his avatar at the end standing over the humans being forced to leave pandora...the only reason that he abandoned his avatar during the final fight, is that when his avatar was wounded..norm felt that pain and it caused him to lose his mental concentration and it disrupted his bond with his avatar...but the avatar was only wounded, not dead.....UNLESS, They just screwed up during the editing or post production.

She was one of my favorite characters before I ever knew about the deleted scenes, and I agree her character arc did not receive justice. I am a sucker for the tragic hero story, and she embodied it more than almost anyone else in the movie--she knew their odds of success were extremely low, while the odds of dying extremely high, but she did it anyway and proved even in her defeat that she was far superior to those who defeated her. These deleted scenes add so much to her story!

Excellent video. Trudy's and Norm's backstory/love interest were cut from the final version of the film for pacing reasons, but add so much to the overall story. With all the deleted scenes (some of which really didn't add anything and should have been cut in any case) they could have easily had a movie over four hours long. What they should have done is cut the thing in half and released the first part as Avatar and the second part as the sequel, released a year or so after the first part. However, that might not have worked out as good as what they eventually released as the first movie. I think the Collector's Edition Extended Cut is the definitive version of the film. It has the Earth opening, explains more about the school and what happened there, gives more context to the Jake and Neytiri romance, and shows us more of Pandora and the Na'vi. Those 16 minutes of restored scenes add much more depth to the story. I remember reading more than a few fanfics on Fanfiction.net back in 2010 about Trudy and Norm's relationship and her backstory. I ended up writing a novel-length fanfic in 2010 (started in February of that year and finished in November) that explored the film's backstory and was my take on the direction I thought the story could take. It also added some dimension to Trudy's backstory and sheds some light on the decisions and actions she makes in the film, specifically the escape sequence. It will be interesting to see the sequel in a couple weeks. Anyway, good video.

Oh oh oh perhaps like the newest na’vi human avatars humans have a copy of her consciousness and the scientists get a hold of that to bring her back? This explains a lot to me. The cuts made to the film and Trudy’s character arc hurt the story. It has always seemed to me that when a script is written and filmed and then cuts are made, it leaves threads that don’t make sense. The director minimizes the damage of these threads, but depending on the film, the damage is lesser or greater. This video explains a lot

An interesting note about the sampson, it was made by Aerospatiale, but in 2000 they went defunct and ceased manufacturing and they were then successed by Airbus. But in the Avatar timeline, they didn't go defunct and ended up making the aircraft that the RDA use. Cool little note to anyone who's into aviation

I understand trimming it down to the already lengthy three hours, but, given all this information on top of my own experience watching the movie, I think it would be worth it to have a four hour cut. Theater goers in 2009 probably would have been pretty reluctant to sit in the theater for that long though.

Makes a lot more sense why in the final cut, the next time you see Norm after the clip of him coming out of the Avatar link after being shot, he is seemingly about to go on an absolute rampage! I always thought it seemed a bit odd. Like, yeah he could be eager to get back in the fight. But from looking terrified and in pure hysterical shock, to looking like he's out for blood, it didn't really fit his character from what we were shown of him in the film's final cut. Makes a lot more sense now with the cut love story between him and Trudy that he would react in that way

Small contribution to this truly much needed addition of yours to the Avatariverse: The Mil-24 Hind you depict in your video taken from the Rambo movies (appears in R2 & R3) is actually a Aérospatiale Puma propped up to look like a Mil-24. Although there are a few versions of the Hind that had the 2 pilots side-by-side config, the Hind is usually quite iconcally recognizable by its realively slender and long airframe and mostly by its tandem bubble-canopy pilot/gunner setup. Sorry for that planespotter nerd-vomit, but at 5 in the morning, my OCD inhibitions are not reved up enough yet 😉 I agree with other commenters on doing the cameron cut of Avatar 1 especially with A2 being played now & A3 in sight. I think an audience today will accept 2-3h movies more readilly if it sees the benefit of the runtime being the product of richness of story or having a slow pace in a flick that truly generated a profound immersion instead of just being plain boring or dragging. Now that I know of this more evolved love story (and I quite liked these 2 characters in A1 to begin with anyway) I really have a feel of loss, never to have heard more of them together. Thanks and stay safe!

Yep, I remember one specific cut of the film that had it. I don't remember if it was the first theatrical extension or one of the several alternate versions on the dvd box set, but it is NOT in the "full extended edition". None of the versions kept the full story, but they did have a different training montage sequence. In one or two of them "Norm's attitude has improved" is voiced over him and Trudy peeking out of bed instead of Norm teaching Jake the language.

I think the movie just focused on the plots more than the side stories so they cut them off, but it would've given the movie more depth from everyone's perspective on what's happening around them and giving the audience clarity on the characters attitude in the movie

I’m so happy the avatar is getting popular again because of the long waiting sequel coming out. I love Trudy and really interested of the futuristic vehicles of the RDA and hopefully we get to see earth 🌍 in the sequels with futuristic setting and what’s left of the nature. ❤

I’m with you. Avatar is one of the greatest movies ever made. I was in my early 20s when this hit theaters and I’ve waited 11 long years for the sequel. I’m still not sure how I feel about that one. It was a great movie and I can’t wait for the rest but I wasn’t prepared for the waterworks. But I digress-I’m glad I found your channel and can learn so many new things about the story! 💙

Cameron said after the release of Avatar 2 that there’s enough footage and story to make a 6 part series of each movie (like Snyder made a 4pt series of Justice League) so that a fuller more comprehensive story could be told. After watching this video, I am 100% behind that idea

I've always felt that Avatar was kind of overrated. However, I think if we got an extended edition that included scenes and details like Trudy and Norm's hidden love story, I think I'd enjoy it a lot more, I always kind of felt like her character was under used at times, like when she died I was like "Oh No..... anyway." But if we had these little scenes, I'd have cared more. Plus, I also like it that the humans actually would have had a motive rather than just being evil. Of course, they still were, but there would be a reason behind it.
