That is one of the best tutorials I have ever watched. No unnecessary pre-talk. Every stitch worked completely in view. Great hints about the use of markers. Showed what to do to complete after kichnering, etc which many tutorials leave hanging. Thank you for the obvious prep before releasing this. Super, super, helpful and excellent.

I did knit a pair of tube socks. Sometimes- I wish I had the guts to cut into it and add heels. IDK if I can do this. Cutting it has to be so scary. That snip sound just went right through me!

Best afterthought tutorial I've seen so far. I knitted a 4 inch tube to test this heel. Following your instructions, everything turned out perfectly. I can't wait to cast on for an actual pair of socks. I didn't have a circular needle in the right size but I used the Addi FlexiFlip needles and they worked just as well. You're a great teacher, and your instructions are so easy to follow. Your tips about the Kitchener Stitch fixed the dog ear problem I was having. Thanks

Another great tutorial!! I’ve used your tutorial for magic loop recently (heel, heel turn and gusset style) - made my first 3 pairs of socks ever and I’ve been knitting for over 40 years. They turned out perfectly with your excellent instructions and tips. I am wearing the first pair and gifted the second 2. The recipients loved them!! Your afterthought heel tutorial looks pretty straight forward - I can’t wait to cast on my next pair. Just a note - I have always been an English style knitter - I also learned how to Continental Knit which makes knitting socks that much easier. Thanks so much for your help. You’ve made knitting socks fun for me :) - and my knitting friends and family with whom I’ve shared your videos. Hope you are having a lovely Thanksgiving.

Kay, thank you for another wonderful tutorial. I did my first afterthought heel several years ago using the KirbyWirby video. Your way of placing three pins all on the same row makes so much sense. Figuring out where to place the heel and toe are where I get stuck sometimes. I now know I can get out my sock ruler and re-watch that portion of your video. Thank you for being so clear and thorough.

Thanks for doing this very clear video. I learned a few tips even though I have been using this method for several years. I usually do toe up as I find it easier to cast on 8 stitches using Turkish cast on instead of casting on 64 for cuff down socks. I always do 7 rounds of plain knitting before doing my heel decreases. It is definitely my favorite heel. Keep the tutorials coming and stay safe and well. 💕

Thanks so much for going in great detail showing the process with the markers, and for sharing your experience with kitchener methods re: dog ears. I always have this problem, so will try your technique next time. I really loved your Afterthought Everything video! It's geniusI never considered that method as an option, but it adresses all the things I love: when the process can be truly mindless in-between-knitting, and the design can be contrast cuffs, heel and toes while using up the full skein of sock yarn in between, without the mess of toe-up knitting. It is exactly what I'm looking for and I want to make it work. I do however have a large instep, and I know heel flaps fit better though I don't like the process or the look of them. I'm going to try your suggestion of starting the heel with extra plain knit rows, but I (think) I heard something about knitting the heel over up to 60% of the total number of stitches rather than half. Have you tried this or do you think this might address the instep issue? I would be grateful for any tips you have, since I just want to make the Afterthought Everything work for me. Love from Ireland, Nathalie.

Excellent video Kay. I have steered clear as I never understood where to place the markers or how to measure. You made it so clear. If I'm not mistaken, you knit the number of rounds you like and then place the markers. After knitting socks for several years, I now realize they are all too large. I was taught on a US 3, have a wide foot and thick ankles. I think my teacher gave me US 3's as that's what the shop had. So I am off experimenting needle size, afterthought heels and counting rounds!

I've knit close to 100 pair of socks and all kinds of heels and toes but never an afterthought heel. Math is not my strong suit and you kind of lost me a bit in the lead up to the actual heel (but I THINK I got it). Your explanation for the heel is the best I think I've seen. I'm pretty sure I could do it now. The pin marks really make a lot of sense. Thank you sooo much!

You honestly have the very best tutorials. I have watched so many while I learned to knit socks and if I'm trying to learn something new, I say a prayer that you have a tutorial available on what I'm trying to learn. Lol After our busy season passes, I'm going to try my first colorwork socks and will do an afterthought heel. If I normally add a couple rows to my heel flap for a deeper heel on your patterns that have a heel flap and gusset, should I make more than 4 rows of knit on my afterthought heel before beginning decreases? Thanks in advance!

I've found this so helpful for mastering afterthought heels! One question - I often see this as a recommended heel for self striping yarns - do other heel styles necessarily mess up the striping? I'm starting a vanilla self striping sock right now and want to do contrasting cuff, heels, and toe in cream. Can't decide whether to just do the heel as an afterthought - which is probably easiest - or whether to try a different heel - which in the cream might be prettier than afterthought. Would a different heel necessarily be tricky to do with stripes?

You made this so clear and easy to understand and not as frightening as I thought. I love just about reached where I was going to do my heel flap on my first sock for summer sock camp. I am using a self striping yarn so now I’m thinking maybe I’ll try this method as it does look so nice with the bullseye. Just to fully understand, you knit 62 rounds for the leg, but you’re placing the lightbulb markers in the 60th round? Also, I’ve got really wide feet, I’ll probably want to add at least 4 round just plain knit before doing the decreases, right?
@CrazySockLady

I appreciate the in depth video. I’ve never done an afterthought heel, but would like to try. When you say leave the same amount of room for the heel as you do your toes, what is your reference point? Are you taking the total length of your foot and subtracting the amount of room you need for your heel? For example, if my foot is 10”, and I need 2” for the heel, would I place my marker for cutting the heel at 8” away from the end of the toe?

Thank you for the tutorial, I have a problem with my sock before even adding the heel. Idk why but the tube thing that I knit tends to twist a little, so after adding the heel (even though I add it on the right stitches) it doesn't fit properly on my foot and feels uncomfortable. What do you think the twist is for?

You mention that you do 4 additional rounds of stockinette before starting the reduction rounds in the heel. Would this work with your typical Vanilla Sock pattern? A 64 stitch sock works okay for me, but it would be nice to have more room when trying to make it fit over my heel. Love your videos, Kay!

I've been wanting to try an afterthought heel where I don't use waste yarn. Your video was great at giving step by step instructions. I was surprised at how easy it was! I'm still working on getting the steps down. I'm noticing the stitches at either end of the slit are creating a tight gathering. I thought it was my tension but that didn't help. I'm wondering if it has to do with the 2 stitches that you leave on either end that is causing this. It's really visible once the heel is completed and I try to lay the sock out flat. Any tips/tricks on dealing with the stitches at either end of the opening?
@CrazySockLady
@CrazySockLady 3 жыл бұрын
That can be a little tighter there but it’s not leaving any holes on the side by leaving those there. I haven’t found that the socks wear any differently. All of that seems to be fine when you wear them.

If your heel is a 56 stitches do you still decrease to 12 stitches on each needle before the Kitchener stitch?

Hello! Thank you for the video, it was a very helpful! I'm confused about where the toe must be placed and the length of the foot of the sock for the tube. I assumed that it would be like doing a typical foot like the heel flap-gusset where you just subtract from the total length of the sock for the toe. When doing afterthought heel, am I subtracting both heel and toe lengths from the total foot length for the tube of the sock? What if the length of your heel is different from the length of your toes?

Yes you’re subtracting for both. I go over measurements in the video. ❤️

I’m trying to follow the Kitchener stitch ending. The last stitch on each needle wasn’t done. The. Sock flipped about a bit but I don’t think you picked up those two stitches? How do they not unravel? And how does just bringing the yarn through to the inside fix the first stitches “dog ear” problem? I like your finished sock a lot, but need help understanding this part. Thank you

Omg! I just did my first pair of socks and used your video to learn heels!! Thank you so much! What pattern did you use for the sock? Mine were toe up, but I would like to try cuff down. I like how yours look super stretchy at the cuff.

Hey Amber, I'm so glad that the video was helpful! I also have videos for Vanilla Socks on Magic Loop, DPN, and 9" Circular. The counts from this videos are what I used for this. :)

I was wondering... why not start the toe shaping/decrease after the heel is done? That way the focus first is to do the heel where one wants it..and then the next focus is the foot length. Maybe you mentioned this and I just missed it?

Mostly because an afterthought heel is supposed to be an “afterthought” something you do when the rest of the sock is complete. ❤️

I have heard the some people do some short rows here as at start. Have you ever tried it to make more room?

Nope I have not. I’ve found the plain K rounds give me enough room.
