Footage inside the house found here • Sylvia likens INSIDE ...
Sylvia Marie Likens (January 3, 1949 - October 26, 1965) was an American teenager who was tortured and murdered by her caregiver, Gertrude Baniszewski, many of Baniszewski's children, and several of their neighborhood friends. This abuse incrementally lasted for three months before Likens died from her extensive injuries and malnourishment on October 26 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Likens was increasingly neglected, belittled, sexually humiliated, beaten, starved, lacerated, and dehydrated by her tormentors. Her autopsy showed 150 wounds across her body, including several burns, scald marks and eroded skin. Through intimidation, her younger sister, Jenny, was occasionally forced to participate in her mistreatment. The official cause of her death was determined to be a homicide caused by a combination of subdural hematoma and shock, complicated by severe malnutrition.
Gertrude Baniszewski; her oldest daughter, Paula; her son, John; and two neighborhood youths, Coy Hubbard and Richard Hobbs, were all tried and convicted in May 1966 of neglecting, torturing, and murdering Likens. At the defendants' trial, Deputy Prosecutor Leroy New described the case as "the most diabolical case to ever come before a court or jury" and Gertrude's defense attorney, William C. Erbecker, described Likens as having been subjected to acts of "degradation that you wouldn't commit on a dog" before her death.
After eight hours of deliberation, the jury found Gertrude Baniszewski guilty of first-degree murder. She was sentenced to life imprisonment but was released on parole in 1985. Paula was found guilty of second-degree murder and was released in 1972; Hobbs, Hubbard, and John were found guilty of manslaughter and served less than two years in the Indiana Reformatory before being granted parole on February 27, 1968.
The torture and murder of Sylvia Likens is widely regarded by Indiana citizens as the worst crime ever committed in their state and has been described by a senior investigator in the Indianapolis Police Department as the "most sadistic" case he had ever investigated in the 35 years he served with the Indianapolis Police.
The funeral service for Sylvia Likens was conducted at the Russell & Hitch Funeral Home in Lebanon on the afternoon of October 29. The service was officiated by the Reverend Louis Gibson, with more than 100 mourners in attendance. Likens' gray casket remained open throughout the ceremony, with a portrait of her taken prior to July 1965 adorning her coffin.
In his eulogy, the Reverend Gibson stated: "We all have our time (of passing), but we won't suffer like our little sister suffered during the last days of her life." The Reverend Gibson then strode towards Likens' casket before adding, "She has gone to eternity."
Following this service, Likens' casket was placed by pallbearers in a hearse and driven to the Oak Hill Cemetery to be interred. This hearse was one of a 14-vehicle procession to drive to the cemetery for Likens' burial. Her headstone is inscribed with the words: "Our Darling Daughter."

There was 1 other, very similar tale, where a girl Sylvia's age was locked in a closet under the stairs & starved by her parents. Surely these are not the same girl. In this other case, one of the girl's sisters would talk 2 her outside the closet. Very soon b4 she finally starved 2 death, she told her sister that she had noticed a bright light coming from the ceiling of the closet, and knew she would die quickly! I've always hoped that light was THE Light, and that she was able 2 go into it at the moment of death!! Humans can be worse than any animal, who would never kill their offspring!! 😡

Oh I'm pretty sure it happens after death. This movie then my research had me in bed crying mad tears for this beautiful young lady so many people failed this child including her Mom and dad..idky they didn't lock them up as well! So after all this happened they left their youngest and only daughter with the district attorney? Listen after I lost a child so brutally I wouldn't leave my other child with my own mother and God knows my mom is the world's greatest in every sense of the word but that's just me! Shame on everyone who failed this young girl and may their souls burn ❤️‍🔥 in the pits of hell! R.i.p. beautiful girl I wish I was the neighbor even tho this was incredibly different in the 60's and I'm a black woman I would have died by a linching to save you! No one would have wanted to hear from a nigero female at that...but baby for you to live a long happy healthy life I would not had turned the deaf ear I'm sorry idk how the neighbors could live with themselves after hearing all this! Judge clearly stated "recommending life sentence" and not "ordering life sentence". So, the System just wanted to teach her a lesson by giving her a detention. Today the System is as corrupted as before in this rulling. Today the correct ruling should be as follows "Any 15 and over year old who deliberate kills another human being must get death penalty unless they were truly mentally absent (insanity)." No detentions, No chances like "oh well we believe murders can change!". Murders, rapists, kidnappers and robbers don't deserve any mercy whatsoever.

A neighborhood boy ( Mike Monroe maybe) did tell his dad a girl at the house had open sores all over her body. The dad called the school and that's why the school nurse went to Grerturde's house. She told the nurse the sores were because Sylvia never washed and was a prostitute. The nurse said ok and left. Poor Sylvia was surrounded by psychopaths.

One of the neighborhood kids did tell her mother that Sylvia was being hurt, but her mother replied, "Well, they're just punishing her, aren't they?" Both Sylvia and Jenny told their older sister Dianna what was going on, but she didn't believe them (which she came to regret later). A school nurse even came to investigate but was told it wasn't true and left. The next-door neighbors saw and heard things but never reported it.

Her younger sister lived to see the day Gertrude died (06/16/1990). She said to her parents that she was very happy that witch died. She lived until June 2004, when she died at 54 years old. As, ironically, for Paula, she changed her name and worked for some time in an Iowa school district, and her past of what she did to Sylvia with her mother caught up with her. She was fired in 2012 for her actions. So, some justice. I just hope she is living in fear and pain every day for what she did to Sylvia.

I live in Indianapolis and I've been following this case since I was a child.. Ironically and unfortunately... We moved to a place called trailer City in Indianapolis . And.... our next door neighbor just happened to be Coy Hubbard. Who a lot of people think is also responsible for the LaSalle Street murders in Indianapolis.. You should do a story on the LaSalle Street murders.. And when you get done with that .. do the Delphi murders

I can remember hearing a lot about this story in the 80's when I was a young guy. Just down right sick. In early 2000's I met one of the boys who was involved. He became a Pastor of a church I attended. I am vary glad he turn his life to God. But that didn't stop me telling him a few words.

Scott, you are truly a beautiful soul. Thank you for telling stories like this with so much genuine compassion and respect. When I started watching this video, I didn’t realize how hard it would hit me. My paternal grandmother was also named Gertrude and she was an abusive monster. The story of poor Sylvia and my first cousin are very, very similar. No one was ever brought to justice. My cousin died young. No explanation whatsoever. All who were involved lived long relatively healthy lives. We must remember souls like Sylvia and tell their stories because it’s important and human and just. And by spreading awareness, maybe we can save others who are in similar situations. For years, I’ve wanted to write my cousin’s story but it hurts so much. I guess watching this particular video is the universes way of saying, “Do it.” Rest in paradise, Sylvia. ❤️🕊 Scott, thanks again for all you do and if you’re ever in NJ or Philly, it would be an honor to meet you. ☮️❤️

This story is absolutely unbelievable and just as appalling as the first time I heard of this horrific idorcity. Over 20 dollars. It seemed to me it truly was jealousy from herself & her daughters. It's incomprehensible a mother could do than next level abuse. Sadly it happens though. Poor Gabriel Fernandez as well. I'll just never understand, bcuz I'd literally die for my daughters. So sad. She was beautiful inside and out. I truly wish the parents could've saved her. Even the police failed her by believing "The Witch" lying about her injuries 🤦‍♀️💔 Hiw some of the offenders are free now sickens me! RIP Angel 🕊🕊🌹🌹🌹💖💖 God bless 👑🙏🏼🕊💞💞

If that would’ve been my sister I would’ve told someone at least my teacher. Come on how scared can you be? There’s No Excuse! There was plenty of time to tell someone. Come On! They were all EVIL and COWARDS! Everyone who took part in this will meet their maker and Justice will be served!

Your true crime stories are my favorites because you tell the victims' stories in such a compassionate and respectful manner and honor their memories. Sylvia's story broke my heart. This is one of the most horrific crimes I've ever heard of. The demon who tortured this innocent child should have gotten the electric chair - and they should have taken their time. I wonder why Sylvia's parents didn't call at least once a week to check in on their 2 daughters and SPEAK to them. Surely they would have suspected something if they got repeated excuses why Sylvia couldn't come to the phone/wasn't there? The mind boggles!
