Nicholas Samuel "Nick" Markowitz (September 19, 1984 - August 9, 2000) was an American teenager who was kidnapped and murdered at the age of 15 after a feud over drug money between his half-brother Benjamin "The Narc" Markowitz and Jesse James Hollywood. The movie Alpha Dog is based on this case.
Nick lived in West Hills, Los Angeles with his parents, Jeff and Susan Markowitz. The feud between Nicholas' older half-brother, Ben Markowitz, and Jesse James Hollywood, a mid-level drug dealer, began over an alleged $1,200 debt owed to Hollywood by Markowitz. On August 6, 2000, Hollywood, and his friends Jesse Rugge, and William Skidmore decided to confront Benjamin. However, on their way to see him, they saw Nicholas walking on the side of the road, having run away from home, and decided to abduct Nicholas in order to hold him for ransom in lieu of Benjamin's debt. They chased, assaulted, and abducted Nicholas, then escaped in a van.
Hollywood and his gang then picked up Brian Affronti (another one of Hollywood's friends) and drove up to Santa Barbara, California. When Hollywood and his gang informed Nicholas of why they were holding him, he allegedly panicked at first, however, after they offered him drugs and alcohol he felt that he was a part of the group. Hollywood left Rugge in charge of watching Nicholas and went back to Los Angeles apparently to talk to Ben. While in Santa Barbara, Nicholas met Rugge's friends Graham Pressley, Natasha Adams-Young, and Kelly Carpenter. The group attended various house parties together; reports indicate that many witnesses - parents and teens alike - saw the group together but did not realize anything was wrong.
After Hollywood told Rugge that Nicholas would be returning home, Rugge, Markowitz and several others held a going away party in the pool area of the Lemon Tree Inn. However, after learning of the legal ramifications he could face for kidnapping, Hollywood called Ryan Hoyt, another member of his gang who owed him $1200, to kill Nicholas, giving him a TEC-9 semi-automatic firearm. The decision was made to commit the murder in the Santa Ynez Mountains, close to West Camino Cielo Road, north of Goleta, California.
After the party, Hoyt, Rugge, and Pressley drove Nicholas to the mountains, and walked up a trail to a grave dug by Pressley earlier that night. Rugge bound Nicholas's hands behind his back and covered his mouth with duct tape. Hoyt then hit Nicholas in the back of the head with a shovel, knocking him into the grave, and shot him nine times with Hollywood's semi-automatic pistol. The members of the group then tried to hide the gun by placing it between the legs of Nicholas's body and covering the body with dirt and branches. However, the grave was too shallow and close to the popular Lizard's Mouth Trail. Nicholas's body was found on August 12, 2000.
Ryan Hoyt, Jesse Rugge, William Skidmore, and Graham Pressley were all arrested after numerous leads to the sheriff's office following Nicholas's death. Jesse Hollywood went on the run but was eventually captured in a small town near Rio de Janeiro.
Ryan Hoyt, aged 21 at the time of the murder, was charged with first-degree and is on Death Row at San Quentin State Prison, San Quentin, California.
Jesse Rugge, aged 20 at the time of the murder, was charged with aiding in the kidnap and execution of Nicholas Markowitz. On October 24, 2013, Jesse Rugge was released from prison and is now on parole, after serving 11 years in prison.
William Skidmore, aged 20 at the time of the murder, was charged with kidnapping and robbery. In September 2002, he was sentenced to 9 years in a state prison as part of a plea bargain. Skidmore was released in April 2009.
Graham Pressley, aged 17 at the time of the murder, dug the shallow grave for Nicholas. He was tried twice.
Jesse James Hollywood, aged 20 at the time of the murder, was not present at the scene of the crime but was found guilty of having ordered the job. He immediately went on the run, but was arrested in Saquarema, Brazil, after five years of being on the FBI's most wanted list. In 2009, he was convicted of kidnapping first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Thank you so much for doing this for Nick. I've seen so many videos about this story that focus on the loser, Jesse, and not so much on Nick. Nicky was a wonderful guy, and a great friend. He was the first friend I came out to as gay, and he accepted me...even gave me a hug and told me it was ok, that he'd always have my back. He never told anyone, but encouraged me to. Again, thank you so much. This was a beautiful tribute to my friend

My heart hurts for this young boy, for his family and his friends, and for the life he never got to live. Just why?? I think that any of those boys who knew what was coming to Nicholas that day should have been charged with murder and none of them should have had a chance to walk among us ever again. This story made me cry. I will never understand such hatred and evil. RIP where love eternally surrounds you now, Nicholas ❤ 💐

Alpha Dog’s one of my fav movies too. It really hurt my heart knowing what Nicholas went thru, and for what, money? I will never understand the lengths some people will go for the all American dollar. An innocent, young soul taken in such a despicable way. My heart and love to his family, and thank you for honoring and remembering him with your video. Well done.

Sadly there's so many murders here in the states depending where you live it'll barely make the local news. I grew up in baton Rouge and I remember every night the first 10 minutes of the news they would go over all the shootings that took place. It got to be so normal. I even had a friend that got murdered and it surprisingly made national news only bec the parents were going to sue on star bec if they would have allowed it to be turned on even though they didn't have a subscription it could have saved his life by finding him earlier. That's a very short version of events. When they found his body it had been in an abandoned lot for about a month. A utility worker found him. The neighbors claimed they could smell him and they just thought it was a dead animal. That was the sad reality I grew up in.

Edit: I've seen a few of Rugge's interviews. He has zero remorse. How he got out is beyond my comprehension. And you're correct, we are only born once. As Christians, we can ask forgiveness from Christ and be saved through His grace. But, Jesus, our Saviour, was Jewish. The Jewish are HIS people. 2 different sets of rules and Jesse doesn't get it. It's an act.

When Jimmy Pittman got out of prison after 10 years, he could quote every word of Scripture, used to wear a gold star of David and lived with us in the early-mid '90s. The lines are being drawn in the sand, it's no coincidence they are crying conspiracy about a people that left Babylon.

His parents killed him really. If his dad had given his brother the money he could have paid off the debt and his brother would never have been kidnapped.

Funny I stumbled upon this clip just now, was watching "The Wraith" earlier with Charlie Sheen, and noticed that Packard was played by Nick Cassavettes. Thought the name sounded familiar. After looking him up earlier today, I noticed that he had directed "The Notebook" and "Alpha Dog" just to name a couple. Great movie about such a sad and true story. You're a terrific narrator Scott and you never cease to amaze. Enjoy your videos man. Another job well done.

What a great mini documentary. You did a good job 👏 Alpha Dog is one of my favorite movies and I’ve been following the case for years and watched several documentaries. Unsolved Mysteries did a show on this before Jesse James was caught. Jesse Rugge has a 3 part KZfaq interview with big hurk. I’m sure you’ve seen it too. Again, great job 👍

🤗Thank you Scott. Such a sad story. Sending a hug your way. There are so many things in this life that I don't understand and why such young people have to die in this manner when they have their whole life ahead of them is one of them. Take care of yourself and stay safe on your travels! ❤

I actually knew those fools, I knew Jesse James Hollywood and Ben Markowitz (Nick's older brother) from high school and baseball. Jesse was sort to say, my weed guy at the time, he would invite me to parties at his house but never attended. Initially, I never liked Jesse, I only gave him my busy here and there. Even the day Nick got kidnapped, Ben called me asking if I seen his brother, but after finding out of what happened to Nick was devastating that I was also questioned by the police about but I actually didn't know what happened. It took two years to find Jesse, the feds found him hiding out somewhere in South America. I live two blocks where you're standing.

Thank you Scott for covering this sad story. I have had a hard time with this story and cannot bring myself to watch Alpha Dog, I have seen clips of it and it was too much just from knowing the story behind the movie. I've also delved onto this story on the deep side and it is just so heartbreaking. It is one that has me thinking of his Mother and sending prayers to her. Injust have no words. Thank you again Scott for all your hard work to get Nicholas' story told. I love you and your channel. If you're ever in Phoenix Arizona, I'd love to help you with anything you cover here.

My son showed this movie to me when it 1st came out. He was 21 and his little brother was 14. I was absolutely horrified!!! I couldn't imagine as a parent, this happening to me. I heart broke for nick and his mother and the rest of his family. I never understood why Frankie (Justin Timberlake's character) didn't get him to the office at the hotel and call police or parents, somebody to protect him once he knew what they were planning on doing. When they were at the hotel and he asked nick if he wanted to go get him cigs or whatever. So many times in the movie that he could've been saved but wasn't is so heartbreaking!!!!! Rip Nicholas ❤
