I haven’t seen anyone dig deeper into the SEX TAPE the daughter was caught making. Seems a very strange plot-device in general, but even more so because it was completely ignored and glossed over, even by a police officer/stepmother. It must have been included for good reason. We know that the spiral cult is a sex cult, and that a particular sexual snuff film/tape was a very big component of the first season, so what are your thoughts on that? Do you think it will come back, and that the daughter will play a larger role in this/Ennis???

One eye = Odin (& now in Ep03 we see a CROWNED polar bear? C'mon maan!) who sacrificed his eye inorder to learn ('women's') magic? Even in Clan of the Cave Bear the elder Shaman is missing an eye which inturn enables him to see 'clearly' in both worlds- the mundane & the spiritual. And a Q; immediately after the standard opening credits sequence the shot we see is of Qavvik's ice fishing cabin (although we, the audience don't actually know this until later in the episode when we see the scene of Navarro visiting Qavvik to ask about Tagaq) I'm positive that choice to spend the initial opening shot on a shot of what we don't yet know is actually Qavvik's ice fishing cabin (aka his 'fortress of solitude') is extremely important, relevant, deliberate, etc... but WTH? I really thought that YOU'D be the one to tell us why... Lol. Thx for all the other phenomenal insights. AJ

First of all, I don't think anyone would feel any guilt over killing Wheeler, but more importantly...When they walked in on Wheeler, he was whistling "Twist & Shout." That's the song that Danvers associates with her son. Maybe he knew that (although IDK how) and he was taunting her, or maybe he even had something to do with her son's death. But, if that were the case, I don't know why he wasn't in jail. Anyway...I think Danvers shot him because of the whistling. There's definitely something to that.

Yep, naturally everyone's mind comes to Navarro being the shooter, especially since it's Liz who has a problem with her later on, but it felt like a simple setup with the cutoff right before the shot occurs. Your catch definitely glues this Liz being the shooter theory together. And there are even more examples supporting it, throughout these 3 episodes it's actually Liz who insists on doing things off the books: getting Peter to steal Anne's files from his father's house, barraging into the technician's house wihtout the warrant, shooting a shot with the vet to check if he is willing to do a postmortem on scientists and so on. Navarro only uses leverages and pours some alcohol into violent dude's fuel tank, other than that I think she insists on doing things by the book. Of course we meet her when she is painted obsessed over Anne's case and consumed by the case coming back all of a sudden, so we assume she is the bad one for tresspassing tsalal and digging up memories. I wonder where will the plot go, but the show after the ep3 finale is starting to balance on a thin line between mysterious and corny. I hope they know what they were doing with that.

@@autk Well, I guess I can throw my music degree in the trash because WTF do I know? LOL Just because he changed the key and made it sound ominous doesn't mean it's a different song. Ya know, people often take bubblegum pop, slow it down, and change the key to make it sound different. It's kind of a common occurrence. (Especially on HBO! They love doing stuff like that with music. Did you watch "Westworld?") To be specific, he whistles the part that goes, "Well shake it up baby, now. Shake it up, baby. Twist and shout." Listen to the last 3 notes. It is 100% "Twist & Shout." You don't need the CC to confirm it (although it does).

in the last scene when denvers and navarro watch annies video you can see „we‘re all in this together“ written on the glass of the hospital reception. to me this further hints at the scale of the case. as you mentioned the case is not just about the murder of annie and the death of scientists but involves the whole of ennis and that everyone is affected by whats going on. pretty good detail to really show that there is something much more sinister going on

So a couple of things I noticed that may not mean anything, but I feel like everything in this show is intentional and has meaning: 1) when Danvers and Navarro had the evidence laid out, there was a picture of the spiral and it was closest to a piece of equipment that said “police.” I think it’s quite literally pointing to police involvement in all of this. I think it’s clear that there’s something sinister that Prior is covering up, but it goes deeper. I think Connelly is definitely involved somehow. 2) the red-haired woman with the eye patch is seen several times. She’s more a background character for now, and didn’t speak at all. But with how much we’ve seen of the one-eyed polar bear, I think it’s safe to say she has a bigger role than just a background character. She may be hiding in plain sight, just like the character in season 1

I am so hooked on Night Country and your videos make the experience so much better. After watching ep. 3, it occurs to me that maybe Annie discovered the “origin of life” the Tsalal scientists were seeking. And it turns out to be a hellscape not meant for humans to see (the supernatural). Her lover of several years, Raymond Clark, jump scares her because he has to save the research. That’s what we hear near the end of Annie’s livestream. He chooses the mine and Tsalal over Annie K. In a state of madness, Clark commits a ritualistic act: the removal of her tongue to “silence” her forever. This haunts him. He creates the trailer shrine to repent. Clearly I’m invested and spend too much time thinking about possible outcomes.

When Danvers is at the gathering for the still born baby, I believe her discomfort must have related to her own experience with her son's passing, because a similar gathering may have occured (as the son's father was indigenous). so her discomfort is her reliving her past grief and memories of it (with her step child) which she avoids at all costs rather than complacency.

Starting to think "she" is the polar bear. The spiral in this season goes anticlockwise, suggesting reversal, things going backwards - Danvers' son in Navarro's dream is backwards (look at the words on his pyjamas, bear's missing eye). The spiral in season 1 was clockwise as the cult were actively moving forward toward Carcosa, but here it may be about reversal or, like you suggested, immortality. The scientists found something in the ice that they believed might reverse disease, even death. Tried it on a dead polar bear by trying to regenerate its missing eye. Then they hallucinated that the bear came back to life - she's awake - so they ran in terror. That's my best guess at the moment

The oranges I found interesting. The connection I made with them in my mind was their usage to prevent sailors from getting scurvy out at sea. Navarro’s sister when she has her episode and later talks with her says that all the ice is water, it is the sea. The scientists were working with microorganisms in the ice, perhaps the oranges are a clue to a disease from the ice causing all the madness in town.

The spiral represents passage into or out of the Unseen World. Depending upon which way it is drawn. When the outer arm points to the right it means passage out of the Unseen World into our World. If the spirals outer arm is pointing left it means passage from Our World into the Unseen World, this is the land of dreams, death causes us to make the journey, but certain people also can go there and return. I believe Navarro went into the Unseen World when she was knocked unconscious.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but the phrase "this is older than ice" makes me think that one of the things that is older than ice is gravity, and what makes water flow down the drain and form a spiral is the Coriolis effect. At high latitudes, this force is much stronger, and perhaps this makes people a little prone to hallucinations. Perhaps there is some relation between magnetic anomalies and the paranormal.

(potential) Also noticing some interest symbolism surrounding the Priors - The color blue seems to be shown quite often representing the "evil" themes, which Blue King / Yellow King has been mentioned. I believe Peter is reporting to his Dad on Danvers progress - couple more details pointing towards this that ill need to confirm a bit more. Thanks for covering this show! Blue!! Okay yes. Around 21:50 before Navarro slips. There’s this blue floating thing that comes in top left of the screen. Pause it and zoom in. It’s definitely something the writers put in. It’s a transparent blue thing up there for about two seconds then blacks out.

(long shot) Spiral reference you might have missed from ep1. When Danvers goes to the school teacher to ask him about what the scientists were studying, on the chalkboard at the front of the class is a 3d cross section of the earth and it's various crust layers. They 90 wedge cut out of the earth showing the layers matches almost exactly to the spiral. You could overlay the spiral onto it almost exactly. Perhaps another reference to the spiral cult being linked to things deep down in the earth?

They are mining something that they don't want people to find out about. Annie went in the mine and found it. Tsalal scientists found it in their core samples. Not sure what it could be, but I found this on google: Metal mining is the leading source of toxic releases in Alaska Uncontrolled mine waste, as well as the processing chemicals used to extract this ore can be a significant source of pollution to the water, land, and air.

Characters / Animals with one eye, heightened awareness, symbol of resilience.... Odin Allfather hung himself from the roots of Ygdrassil for three days, ripped out one of his eyes and threw it in Mimir's well, and pierced his side with his spear, Gungnir. In return, Odin gained the power of the Runes, which allow one to access, interact with, and influence the world-shaping forces they symbolize. Aka, Magic. Odin also was then able to drink from Mimir's well which granted him cosmic wisdom and the ability to see and understand things that were hidden from him.

@MrZelda1313
@MrZelda1313 4 ай бұрын
I might be wrong, but I feel like the hallucinations are more connected to Evageline's mother's condition and it's hereditary aspect then the water poison. Also cause Cohle's hallucinations are related to his use of drugs while undercover. Awesome theories, can't wait to see what happens next!
@jackgladney
@jackgladney 4 ай бұрын
Rust Cohle has hallucinations because of brain damage from drug use while he was undercover, something he explains directly to Marty. He sees things unrelated to the cult symbol as well, like the lights that appear while he’s on the freeway. I like the free association of these videos and especially the rapid-fire close reading, and it’s good to notice things and just name them without worrying about consistency, but this season doesn’t have a substantial link to the first season-just some superficial touches demanded by the marketing department. The worst thing you could do to an anthology is make it into marvel product.
@Kristine_202
@Kristine_202 4 ай бұрын
I disagree. You're right about Rust's "visions," but I do think there is a substantial link to the first season. I mean, we've already met Rust's dad. (Or his ghost anyway.) The same symbol is significant in both seasons, and the Tuttle family is involved in both. Plus the final scene of season 1 is literally Rust and Marty talking about the night sky in Alaska and now this season takes place during the extended darkness (or "night country") in Alaska. I feel like those things alone set up a "substantial link" and we're only 3 episodes in.

Rust made that diagnosis on his own. He makes no mention of having them before his time undercover which either means he didn’t have them before going undercover , or he did and purposely didn’t mention it. He also lies when asked by the two cops interviewing him when they ask if he still has visions. He tells them no. When Marty asks him after they’ve reunited he tells them they never really stopped.

Love this season; but there's too much happening here and that worries me. Tsalal, The Mine, The Water, Tuttle, Rust Cole, The Cult, The Spiral, The Yellow King, Carcosa, The Scientists (and their research), Annie, plus Danvers and her son, plus Danvers and Navarro, (and Wheeler) Navarro and her sister, Hank and his son... There's only 3 episodes left to sort everything out. Knowing HBO, very likely they're gonna end this with a cliffhanger and continue later with a second part of the season. Hope they don't do that, but, like I said at the beginning, I'm worried. Hope I'm wrong!

If a company wants to call the silver on their watch “antique silver”, it should be understood that the term antique silver generally describes an antique made of silver, not a type of fancy silver. If it’s a brand new item, it is not made of antique silver. It’s just made of silver that, I assume, is made to look old for aesthetics.

Does anyone notice it’s an exact excerpt from The Dark Tower? “The fabric of things is thin and the world is old” is almost word for word. They called spots like that a Thinny. And guess who was The Man in Black, aka Red King? Matthew M. And they also had similar facilities at the Beam stations in Dark Tower. Then there’s “The gunslinger fled across the desert, and the man in black followed.” It’s literally called The Wasteland. If that’s not an Ennis type place, nothing is. In season 1, the Iron Crusader dude literally said “I need a gunslinger.” Again, Roland was literally the last Gunslinger. also, if remember, Roland and Jake had to fight the giant bear. That’s a lot of connections. Just realized the whole time is a circle thing is also in the Dark Tower. Roland/Rustin is doing the loop again and again and again. Time is a flat circle and so on.

About Childress saying "my family has been here for a long long time", could that not also allude to the theroy that this is the same swamp cult from H.P Lovecrafts story, Call of Cthulhu? This is how I always thought that it is, and that that cult has been in Louisiana for a long long time. I really like to think there is a connection there, which would be super cool connecting Lovecrafts works with True Detective even more!
