It’s called death rattle. The nerves are still alive that produce the “bark” or jolt of movement from the wolf as she guts it. I think it was put in there to make us briefly question whether the wolf was alive or dead….just like when we see the man in the very next scene, questioning if who we were seeing was alive or dead.

My theory: the mine is releasing lead into the water sources, causing the town folk and all animals exposed to it to hallucinate. The show is very intentional about showing the characters brushing their teeth with tap water, followed by a creepy hallucination immediately after. Even the lady who starts seeing the ghost is exposed to the wolf blood stream (assuming it’s drinking from the same water sources) right before she starts following the ghost that reveals the bodies. I think the hallucinations will become worse as the season continues until they figure it out they’ve been drinking lead water.

There is some toxin leaking into drinking water so affected caribou to jump off the cliff scientists to lose their mind and run out naked to freeze to death. It could be like in that show Fortitude where the mining crew accidently unearthed thousand year old frozen mammoth and it thawed and released a virus into the town and animals and people start going crazy. Brilliant show btw. This could be same idea and mega evil mining corp could be covering it up.

Mate I tell ya, I saw the crooked spiral symbol and I got extremely intrigued. I have been desperate to learn more about that whole evil Yellow King/Lovecraftian cult that Errol Childress was apart of ever since I watched season 1. After all, Rust famously said in the hospital that ‘we didn’t get them all.’ The thought of further exploration of ‘them’ and they’re beliefs fascinates me

@@hennysmith8229 I don't see how the symbol of the Yellow King traveled from the cult of a mad murderer in Louisiana to Alaska. However, we have to keep in mind that the pilot begins with a quote from the Yellow King story series. I also think Rust's father was named Travis, similar to 'the ghost' Rose thinks she sees. Nevertheless, the spiral is an ancient symbol that has held diverse meanings in various cultures, from prehistory to the present day. Personally, I think the connection with the first season is just an homage.

I didn't get the impression that she was hard of hearing. I thought they added that "speak up" line so that we would know that the cops are father and son. Alaska is hella dark in the winter no sun, so people are bound to "see things" I'm not mad about the visions. People already complaining that it's "too supernatural" lol. The mind can play tricks on people that go six months without sunlight. So the "supernatural stuff" could be a result of seasonal depression or some coast to coast vibes. Either way it sets a creepy tone, which is exactly what the first season did. Especially when Rust was tripping on the Yellow King visions, which could have been premonitions or just drug flashbacks, or both. Season 1 left that decision up to the audience.

The one detail that REALLY stood out to me is the use of a very specific shade of blue. The color blue that Hank is painting the room in his house for his Russian mail order bride is extremely similar to the shade of blue on the floor of the science facility. That shade of blue is also the same color of Navvaro’s jacket and there are hints of that shade of blue throughout the episode. Seems very intentional. Sounds tin foil hat, but it reminds me of the detail from S1 of the specific color of the house being painted tying to Childress’ painting business and painting the house of the Fontenot family prior to the abduction of Marie Fontenot. Also- just noticed that Navarro’s sister has her hair dyed a similar shade of blue as well. It’s also the same shade of blue that Hank has for the keyboard on his phone when he is texting his mail order bride and the color of the hockey helmets. I know blue is a super common color but this has to be intentional in some way to draw our attention to it.

I don’t know what to think about Dan. He seems to want to delay things as if the scientists left fresh food, acting as if he doesn’t hear a request to look at cases with missing tongues, and denying files are at his house. Mercury poisoning is my guess. The mine is leaking mercury into the groundwater. The gold mining process uses mercury to recover gold particulates and mercury poisoning is known to cause hallucinations. Anna K discovered the contamination and was killed before she could blow the whistle. I think the missing murder weapon will turn out to be a piece of a mining tool due to the star-shape of the wounds.

A unique and fascinating glimpse of American society which I find almost alien. This first episode was exceptional. My only quibble, so far: In this episode we’re cautioned the water has been tainted/undrinkable for three days yet we see Jody Foster washing dishes and making soup - one assumes with water as an ingredient - without care. And, wouldn’t you expect to see cases and cases of bottled water stockpiled next to the mountains of canned goods and toilet paper? Lastly, is it SOP for cops to have boxes of case records in their homes?

@user-tx8gq5zf1l 4 ай бұрын
I was hoping that as well. Supernatural works on a show like xfiles but has no place in true detective. Sadly however it looks like it may be pointing towards that. Ghosts have already appeared, the setting is a paying homage to 1980s The Thing which also dealt with supernatural. Yeah, it's taking me out. They brought on a completely different creative team for this one and in time I guess we'll learn if it was a smart move or a political one

In the opening, the camera pans from Ferris Bueller to sammich guy, and coat dude isn’t there. It specifically shows the spot he’s standing. Then, sammich guy shifts and says “ta-dah”, and coat dude is there, covered in snow and shivering or shaking. Seems to me it was: a continuity error, meant to be deceptive, or he warped there from outdoors (reversed electronic sound?).

The Tsalal is also a short story by Thomas Ligotti, which also ties it thematically with season one. Let's remember that Rust Cole's philosophy was literally plagiarized by the show from Ligotti's The conspiracy against human race. The Tsalal story itself is about bringing a long forgotten forever darkness back into the world, so I guess it makes sense.

Still bugging me that the deputy who thinks he's the co-sheriff was hoarding case files in his house & not required to return them to secured storage, & why did his son have to lie & sneak the file out. There's got to be a good reason for his secrecy & the wall to wall stacks of boxes, beyond the reference to a certain political/legal situation related to official documents & flooding you may have heard something about, how much evidence is he hiding & for who?
