This one adapts the novel more faithfully. The John Wayne one (which I still thoroughly enjoy) was transformed somewhat to match John Wayne's previous cowboy roles. His Cogburn was less of a scoundrel. Bridges' portrayal matches the novel's characterization.

When Maddie shoots at Chaney the second time in the river and the gun doesnt fire, its not that she just had one shot in it. She is using a Colts Dragoon Revolver which used a type of cap ammunition that was known to misfire when wet or under heavy moisture. If you play the scene again, Maddie actually falls into the water after her first shot. This is just one of many details the Coen brothers made sure to have in the film.

To this day I still don’t understand why Hailee was nominated for best supporting actress when she’s the lead of the film. I think she had more of a chance of winning for best actress and so the Academy bumped her down to support. She’s a wonderful actor who elevates everything she’s in. Great comedic timing too. On top of that it seems she’s a really funny and nice person in real life too which is always a bonus to find an actor you like is a genuinely nice person. It’s strange how a lot of people weren’t aware of her before Hawkeye since she’s Oscar nominated and a multi-platinum singer. Crazy talented and incredibly hardworking. Honestly such a remarkable person. Oh and the film’s great too.

So here's a crazy fact the scene where Hailee Steinfeld is negotiating the ponies and the saddle at the beginning of the movie she actually had a high temperature and fever over 100°. And they were constantly having to wipe her face down from sweat.

I've seen this film many times. Probably the most underrated of all the Coen Brothers films. Perfectly cast. The dialogue is true to the novel. Almost poetic. I can think of no better film to share with a daughter or other adolescent female. The character of Mattie Ross is a stellar example of intelligence and toughness. The River crossing scene is my favorite part. Mattie will not let anything dissuade her.

A lot of the dialogue is pulled straight from the book, like the one about the cheap shells. Definitely worth a read

The book, by Charles Portis, is well worth a buy and a read. The language is nicely adapted to both this movie and the John Wayne/Kim Darby version. Having grown up with the first version, I was ready to be disappointed in this one, but the Coen Brothers pulled through, as they often do. I will say that, from what I remember, in the book, La Boeuf comes to a different end, and I believe that the John Wayne/Kim Darby version used that one. It might be interesting for you to watch the other one and compare; and if you have the time, read the source novel, to see how each script took its direction.

Dakin Matthews is the actor you mentioned at 4:40. I first remember noticing him as Evander Geddes in 'Carnivàle'. But I've noticed him numerous times since then. He's had a long and varied in actin, film, theater and entertainment in general.

An example of the Coen Bros. attention to detail: LaBoeuf's shot at 29:57- Lucky Ned's body jerks slightly & simultaneously, a small puff of dust behind him to indicate the shot passed through Ned & hit the ground behind him! That's A MASTER CLASS in film-making!! Some bully shot!

I loved the use of hymns as the background music. I remember seeing this in the theater and enjoying it so much. I grew up seeing the original, as my dad was a big John Wayne fan. I liked the original, but this one was much better. If you want another western, the best John Wayne movies for me are: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance The Cowboys

I like that the Cohen's insisted this was NOT a remake. They make that claim by saying that they did not draw upon the John Wayne film as their source material, rather they based their screenplay on the novel, and were inspired to write it when one of them read the novel and realized how far the John Wayne film had started from the perspective, style and dialogue of the book. (The John Wayne film uses more of a 3rd person narrative focusing on Rooster as the main character, while the book is told from the first person by Maddy, and therefore follows her as the central character). I also love how, like the novel, they use a sort of corrupted Victorian dialogue, and the characters use very few contractions in their speech.

Everyone is so darn good in this. Another great addition to the Coen Bros. filmography.

Brooo whaaaat I randomly decided to watch this on Netflix last night after YEARS of not watching it and then you immediately drop a reaction. Crazy.

I've only just watched it now, and I must agree She's very talented , her facial expressions in the movie are incredible for such a young starlet. I loved her negotiations with the Colonel and then also waking up to the Texas Ranger in her bedroom , those facial expressions are amazing. Her dialogue is also very well written. I just loved her cocky character and wit.

I look forward to your comparison of the first one and the book. I think this one is the best in all ways, casting, script, acting, style and scenery. The first True Grit movie was in my opinion purely a vehicle for the caricature that John Wayne had become. I enjoyed it at the time but I like the Coen treatment better.

The cast in this film and the 1969 version are both fantastic. Both movies are great to watch so I hope you do manage to give the other one a go.

The Way of the Gun is a kinda-sorta modern day western that I'd love to see someone react to. It was the directorial debut of Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects.

𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝑮𝒓𝒊𝒕, the source book by Charles Portis, is one of the very few books that I recommend to everyone. It is a fantastic novel, written in the "voice" of older Mattie recollecting her adventure from her youth. Both movies are great interpretations of the book, though quite different. Do not miss the original 1969 film, if only for the Duke, and the fantastic score. 4 stars both.

I love this film so much, along with the original 1969 movie. Shout out to Fort Smith, Arkansas! (my hometown). It's interesting seeing the hanging gallows in the middle of downtown where the hangings at the beginning of the film take place

I recall when I first heard that there would be a new True Grit, I determined that I would not watch it because the older one was my favorite Western and I did not see a reason to remake it. Then I found that the Coens were doing it, so I had to give it a try. Love it.

I fully agree with David Rogers, below. The Charles Portis book was an incredible read. As in ‘“No Country For Old Men”, the Coen’s had a wonderful Cormac McCarthy novel to use as an outline… Their genius is the translation of imagination to the screen. I am 69, and was lucky enough to have been encouraged to read and taught to appreciate the wonderful dance that the words perform within your mind. My life has had a great library!!

There are lots of great movies, but my favorite Western is the HBO series Deadwood.

The screenplay and dialogue by the way pretty much is taken directly from Charles Portia's novel, which is the Coens' way when adapting novels very precisely as they did for No Country for Old Men. The original film also follows the dialogue and events quite closely and it's worth checking out.

John Wayne's true grit had a sequel called Rooster Cogburn.

To dwell on the ridiculously obvious for a moment: the dialogue style in the book and both movie versions, in which only very rarely does any character ever use a contraction, conveys a sense of a setting in which people, because they speak so very differently from the way we do, must be felt to be thinking very differently as well.

When I first saw this film, I thought Hailee Steinfeld would be perfect for Katniss Everdeen. I didn't get my wish, but at least with Hawkeye, I got to see her with a bow and arrow.

While the 2010 version is a favorite of mine. I am a huge John Wayne fan and have loved his western since I was a kid. That exchange from Robert Duvall "Bold talk for a one eyed fat Man!!" and John Wayne "Fill your hand your son-of-a-bitch!!" Just golden. ;)

Perhaps one of the best Westerns is Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West" with Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson and Jason Robards
