This clip is ONLY to show the amount of FOCUS and DISCIPLINE TRADITIONAL KARATE demonstrates at its best. It is what I was brought along on and served me well in situations, even sparring when I had to persist through discomfort and pain.

This kind of body toughen is common in the Kyokushinkai Karate styles. Kyokushinkai actually came from Goju Ryu Karate . Kyokushinkai had a strong hold in New York in the 70s (see the film The Black Fighting Kings). I don't know how it is there today. One of the pioneers of Kyokushinkai in New York, Shigeru Oyama, recently passed away.

I trained under Soshu Oyama when he would come into the dojo on Friday nights. He actually broke from Kyokushin and started Oyama karate. He was Mas Oyama's best student and actually Mas was Korean! He took the name Oyama from Shigeru's family. Next, I was a junior in karate and actually SAW some of the black kings like WILLIAM OLIVER up close. He actually was Seido karate which was founded by TADASHI NAKAMURA, a top student of Mas also. I purposefully gave this info so people once again understand that few people on youtube have my legacy or experience. Most people think a black man cannot possibly be an authority on the martial arts! We can be and like it or not (not to you, but to others), we ARE. Sayf Carman Ummah fight camp.

Too many people are missing the point of this training, In my opinion the training is prepare the fighter for real world experience. You will not be able to block every punch or kick, so you need to train your body to withstand pain and freeze up when you need your training the most.

We were taught by our sensei that whenever we do a kata ,do it like you are really applying it against an attacker . He used to check the integrity of our kata by hitting us real hard while we do our katas ( not as hard as he could though! ).

Reminds me a little of training in Shotokan back in 1980. Doing kata and having the instructor smacking you with a split-bamboo sword the whole time. But not nearly as hardcore as these guys :O

This kind of training has allowed me (a long time ago lol) to have my nose bleeding like a faucet and move FORWARD anyway. After you go through this getting hit with padded hands is no big deal.

It is about actually the discipline, not the kata. A guy from down the street can do the kata and scream in pain from the blows.

I haven't seen anything close to this in years. I was looking for a school to join over the last couple of years. One thing I look for is a good punching bag or kicking bag. Plus other conditioning equipment like a Makiwara. However anything real is almost impossible to find here in St Louis.
