The jet is a Harrier and is a real military aircraft. It’s specifically designed for vertical takeoff and landing. It also uses a f*ck ton of fuel according to Cameron. The actual jet was used in only a few scenes for that reason. Most of the scenes at the tower were life sized mock-ups and models.

26:47 Why is it shooting? Strangely enough, that is actually realistic. When it falls on the back end, the momentum is enough to cycle the action. And since this weapon has a fixed firing pin, that means a shot goes off, even if the trigger is not pulled and the action cycles again. These days, most submachineguns have an internal safety to prevent that from happening, but older models often had this flaw. And, yes, the AV-8B can take off vertically. However, it would have literally melted the road, the cars, and anybody in the vicinity.
@Chasmodius
@Chasmodius 2 жыл бұрын
From what I remember reading and seeing, only the VERY first run of uzi smgs would go off when dropped, and even then it would only be a single round per drop, it wouldn't runaway on full auto like that. This is almost certainly a later model, which would have absolutely had a drop safety. But it makes for a funny scene. Although she is standing directly in line with the way it's tumbling, which is kind of scary.

@@ukcroupier The plane might have killed more friendlies then enemies in its use. Its just not a good plane. It is heavy, has small amount of fuel storage, small payload, not as fast as other jets, not as nimble, not as good in close combat as other jets. It does nothing good except crash on its own killing our troops. The only thing it does is take off vertically. Once its in the air it is beat out by everything else we have. Its first model had half the planes crash outside of combat. Just because we used something since 1985 doesnt mean it was actually useful to the marines. It means someone got a hell of a kick back. The A10 is the plane troops want watching their back in close combat not the harrier. In air to ground or air to air just about every other plane is better.

A lot of the shots were miniatures, CG, or full size mock-up set pieces, but they did get a couple real harriers for some of those shots. When he takes off from the highway to go save his daughter, they're using one of the real fighters. It's an actual stretch of in-use highway but they had to re-pave it with a different material that wouldn't melt under the heat of the jets. When they were done, there was no reason not to leave it that way, so because of this shoot, there's a permanent stretch of still-driveable highway in Florida that can withstand the heat of VTOL jet exhaust.

So, the one question always asked is “how did they know where to find him in the hotel?” But, what a lot of people miss is, there’s a seemingly “throw away” line that Tom Arnold’s character says about setting up a suite under the name Harry Ranquist, just before he goes in and talks to Juno at the museum. So it was (most likely) still that same suite that they used since it would have already been there, and unused for anything other than a cover story. Since the terrorists had the name it was reserved under, they would have easily been able to find out where he was, especially if they were watching the room.

The Harrier really can take off, fly and manoeuvre like that, although the amount of fuel needed is immense. Its the reason that British aircraft carriers didn't have catapults for some time. They are now no longer in service with either the Royal Navy or Royal Air Force, however the US Marines still use them as does the Spanish Navy. They were the inspiration for the current F35.
@EQINOX187

To add when it comes to fuel cost its not really much more to hover than it is to fly forward as the power / throttle is not changed much during the hover any more than it would in horizontal flight only the direction of the thrust nozzles, what really limits its ability to hover however is water as it uses water to cool itself while in hover. sure they can take of vertically when light but with a full load out and full of fuel they where not able to take of vertically meaning they needed a short run way take off and the ramp at the end of carriers helped, upon return they would always land vertically after having expended enough fuel to be light enough to land

@rabid_si
@rabid_si Жыл бұрын
@@EQINOX187 It absolutely is more fuel costly to hover. Below stall speeds, you aren't getting ANY lift from conventional flight surfaces and you need drastically increased thrust in comparison to counteract this (literally fighting gravity at that point). This can easily be seen in the disparity between the weight of its full loadout and the maximum weights for V/STOL loadouts being significantly lower. For VTOL operation itself the loadout weight needs to be below the total thrust of the engine so that it can actually gain altitude. Short takeoff/landings and conventional flight allow for weights 5 to 10,000lbs above max engine thrust and you don't need full power to maintain minimum or cruising speed. If you think this is bunk, please perform the following test. Go out to your car, disengage the hand brake/put it in neutral. See if you can put enough force into pushing it to get that sucker rolling. Manage it? Good job! Now pick your car up.

The story of this movie is interesting. It is an adaptation of the French movie "La Totale!" From Claude Zidi, a legendary french comedy director. The plot is pretty much the same, sans the atomic bomb and harrier jet. Claude Zidi came to a US film festival in LA and made english subbed versions of his movie. Some time after that, Arnold's Brother in law watched the movie and loved it, he invited Arnold over to watch it and he also loved it. And he said that he would love to do an american version of it, but that some parts needed to be reworked to have more dynamism and action. He knew that at the time, Cameron's project of shooting a Spiderman movie was nowhere and got canned. So he called Cameron, talked about his idea, and Cameron accepted directing it. Since Cameron couldnt make a MARVEL movie he still put a Nick Fury look a like character in the movie (the agency boss with the eye patch). Cameron contacted Claude Zidi to buy the rigths to the movie adaptation, Ge sold it for a symbolic 1$ and instead negotiated a % on the movie incomes. It is unfortunate that this is the ONLY comedy ever directed by Cameron, cause man is it absolutly brilliant.

The problem is this movie came out in 1994, any other year and it's probably one of the highest grossing films of the year but it unfortunately never stood a chance of really catching fire because Forrest Gump came out 9 days before and movies like Shawshank Redemption, Dumb & Dumber, The Crow, The Mask, Ace Ventura, Legends of the Fall and Pulp Fiction also came out at the beginning/end of the year so it just got lost in this golden year of cinema.

The musical theme you asked about at the beginning of the movie is the Mission Impossible theme. Arnold's boss who looks like a bad guy is Charlton Heston aka Moses from The 10 Commandments, Judah Ben-Hur from Ben-Hur and George Taylor, the main character from the original Planet of the Apes. The planes are British Harrier jump jets. They are designed for vertical takeoff and then transitioning to normal jet plane flight. They were extremely effective in the Falklands war between Great Britain and Argentina. On a side note, Bill Paxton has a normal sized penis. It is not abnormally small.

When I lived in Los Angeles from 1997-2001 my buddy and I were regulars at the Skybar at the Mondrian Hotel on Sunset. We were grabbing a parking spot on the side street and we seen a older gentleman that looked like Woody Allen,it wasn’t him,walking with Tia Carrera,the Asian chick in this movie, and he had his arm around her waist as they were walking up the same side street towards Sunset. My buddy yells “Only in America bro!” and Tia turned around and smiled. We park and head into the Skybar and who do we see sitting up at the bar? Them two. We bought them around and talked to them for a little bit. Turned out he was a producer and they were talking about a upcoming role for her. At least that’s what he told us. The cool thing about living in LA was that you would run into celebrities on occasion. I met the cast of 90210 there,I had the biggest crush on Tiffany-Amber Theisen ever since she was Kelly Kaposki on Saved by the Bell. She was/is so beautiful. I met Pamela Anderson at the Skybar along with Andy Garcia and a bunch of other B and C list actors and actresses. The owner of the company that I worked for lived in Malibu and my lease on my condo was coming up and the owner,Rob, and I became really good friends. His license was suspended because of a DUI for a year so he said just for me to move in with him so that it would be convenient for me to drive him while his license was suspended. He had a Porsche 911 targa at the time and told me that I could use it whenever he didn’t need it and that I wouldn’t have to pay rent there in Malibu. That was a deal and a half to me. The place he had in Malibu looked like one huge house but it was actually 3 condo type things where each floor was it’s own place. One day I went out on the balcony to smoke a joint and I hear a voice say “is that you Rob?” I said that it wasn’t that I was Robs new roommate and then it hit me that the voice was very familiar. I move towards the edge of the railing and look up and I see Drew Barrymore looking down at me. I was like WTF are you serious? We got to know one another and when we had company BBQ’s on Saturday she would come hang out with us and play football on the beach with us. She was one of the coolest chicks I’ve ever met,forget the movie star part. She was just a genuine down to earth person,so cool and laid back. Everyone would give me shit around her because I had never seen “ET”. I still haven’t seen it to this day and im 45 years old lol. One day Drew gave me a autographed VHS tape,yes it was that long ago,of ET and she wrote a personal message to me on the tape. I still have the VHS tape in a box at my moms house. I had a great time living in LA for those few years.

36:02 - Ah'nuld's comedies certainly were unique. Practically none of them were "misses" but some were more batshit than others. Ones to try: THE LAST ACTION HERO - one of Hollywood's first forays into meta-humour in a blockbuster film. Very high concept. Directed by John McTiernan! KINDERGARTEN COP - probably the funniest Arnold comedy, but also easily one of the darkest film he's ever been. It goes in really violent places. TWINS - this one's dated a lot, but its a fascinating cast and concept. JUNIOR - this one is absolute batshit. Strangely watchable, but also just very weird and uncomfortable (and designed to be). JINGLE ALL THE WAY - really good kids movie (but not actually safe for kids to watch). How much you enjoy it as an adult really varies on how much you buy into the premise. COMMANDO - not intentionally a comedy, but boy its laugh-out-loud funny in hindsight. A must see.

Add RABBIT TEST to the list -- another funny/weird/WTF? movie he made with Danny DeVito. Oh, and THE VILLAIN! :D It's one of Arnie's first non-bodybuilding movies, from before he learned to act. He's totally wooden, but it *works* for his character (a painfully earnest and stoic Western sheriff) and is a crack-up. The actual star of the movie is Kirk Douglas, who's playing a cartoonish Western movie villain. In all seriousness, this is basically a live-action Roadrunner movie, and it's wonderful. :)

It is impossible to detonate an atomic bomb with an explosion or any other kind of damage. In order to set off such a bomb a multitude of small charges within have to detonate in a predetermined order in predetermined direction with an accuracy of less than a microsecond. If this procedure does not happen exactly as planned, the plutonium core is not compacted into the size needed to set off the fission chain reaction but instead it is just blown to bits.

A 90s classic action film. They don't make them like this anymore! I saw this in theaters at the age of 14. What an experience. Oh and it's based on a French comedy, those are the other writers. yes Harrier II was the only fighter at the time that can take of and land vertically, and it is an incredibly difficult manouver. Italy still uses them on their "aircraft carriers". 34:29 - the film is very faithful to the French movie "La Totale!". The embellishments from Cameron are basically the action sequences - the gunfights, horse chase, Harrier-jump jet sequence, the nuclear weapons plot are all his additions. The original film has all of the other elements though - a guy who works as a spy, but his family isn't aware, the wife being seduced by a used car salesman who lives in a trailer park, the spy making his wife do a fake mission, the seduction scene in the hotel room, it's all there. The nuclear weapon threat is actually a plot to launch a missile at a football stadium in Paris. James Cameron gets top marks though for translating French farce humour to ultra-violent American slapstick and also for getting to do his trademark 5th Act mega-action beat i.e. using a fighter aircraft to attack a building. But the plot twists, character arcs and premise is all lifted directly from the French film.

26:45 While it's a bit exaggerated for the movie, that gun continuing to fire as it bounces down the stairs actually is very possible. Open-bolt designs like the Uzi can and will "run away" when in full-auto, meaning that even if you aren't still holding the trigger back the gun will keep firing, especially if something is bumping the back of the gun. It's more unbelievable that the gun still had ammo for the entire fall down the stairs. 28:10 Correct. Nukes are actually really hard to set off, hitting it with a normal explosion won't do anything except destroy it and spray some radioactive debris around the area. 30:35 That's a Harrier jet...they are one of the few planes that can perform a vertical take-off and maneuvering like that, but it's insanely inefficient to do (burns a crazy amount of fuel). If y'all want another great (though far less humorous) movie about nukes, look up Crimson Tide (also from the mid-90s).
