What! My feelings exactly! I'm 73 and seen it all. Lose your ego! I don't have one that constantly needs to be fed. Confidence and a sense of humor is all I need to get through anything! Lose the need to worry and get angry! Two useless emotions that never solve shit! Stop taking life so seriously! Yea, I have concerns, but life has much to offer! Prioritize! What's important and what's bull shit! Best if all, surround yourself with like minded friends. That's the hardest part! Having real friends is rare. Keep what helps and ignore what doesn't! Easier said than done, but get in there and live a good happy life!

I’ve had severe depression/mental disorders and this man is spot on about tying to be a saint. I have learnt to have just enough ego to survive and keep people at a distance and the ones you like close. It’s all part of the game of life, you can’t be friends with everyone. Sure be polite and curteous but run your own path. Find out who you are, once you know this and what is making you upset and depressed you can move forward and thrive. I have met countless junkies and a lot of them think life is about being high all the time, they run from their problems. But we all have problems and we all have to face them eventually. Most of our suffering I believe is from this view that we have to be happy and outgoing all the time but let’s face it the world and society make us unhappy. You have to accept the darkness and make peace with it. Be at one with the universe. Forget what they say on tv or what others say - listen to your heart, turn the chatter off in your brain. Don’t be what society wants you to be! Be your fucking self! Fuck what others think!

Well Said! I've had very similar experiences to you. In regards to severe depression/mental illness. Like you said you 100% need enough ego to survive. All the Egoless nonsense you learn and think is the answer initially actually turns out to be a major problem. Life is definitely a process and being who you are is definitely better than being someone you are not. Thanks for sharing what you wrote.

I choose to be single. I’m better off this way. I suffer with a lot mentally. I can say that I LOVE being independent and having freedom to do what I want, when I want and how I want. I have “0” relationship stress. I only stress at work depending on the day. I cannot handle stress. The only beating heart I want in my bubble is my dog. I’ll talk to you, laugh with you but just remember…we aren’t friends. This isn’t “normal” behavior but so far it’s working. I LOVE being a complete loaner. Was all my childhood. I’m numb to it and finally excepted it. It’s great though. No social network drama. I’m at peace with myself. “I stop and smell the roses” I appreciate the simple things.

@@rockforester7908 nothing mysterious about it my friend, where do you think depression comes from? Depression is mainly of your own doing, you create it. Yes there are external events and happenings that can aid in feeling a certain way, but what people seem to forget is they too can choose how to feel or react to a certain happening. We do posses the power of how we want to feel, we just need to learn how to access it. In this day and age we are constantly distracted, always moving, always needing to be somwhere, whether it is the past or the future. To really strip yourself of depression, the best place to do so is in the now. Where nothing exist, between happy and sadness. Be the observer of your thought and do not get attached to any emotion, doing so will take you somwhere where you are not. When people say they are depressed they will reinforce that belief. The best way to go about your day if you are in a bad place in life is to accept. Surrender and be transparent to what is.

I grew up good at a lot, and yet my dad made a point to remind me, "There will always be someone out there better than you at any given thing." I was competitive, and I remember hating the idea of what he was saying. And yet now I see it as one of the most important things he could have ever said. The drive to 'win' (or to have only happy, or no sad) is always part of us, because we PREFER happy over sad. But life will never comply (to give us ONLY happy or NO sad) because while we prefer happy over sad, we actually prefer story over all else. And there's no story anymore when you 'win' forever. Also, we're not in control. At all. Because we can't ever choose a thought without simply having it. Thus we didn't choose it. We don't know what we'll think of next, whether logical or not, nor how we'll feel about it until the thoughts and feelings occur to us in our awareness. Yet we still feel the morality of what we do. We ALWAYS have a conscience. Right and wrong still exists, even if we're imperfect at figuring it out (or doing it) at times. And we still learn. There are always options (a wise person sees even more options and acts in ways that seem to benefit lots of people)... but what we choose: we don't know what we're gonna choose till we feel it inside. And we can't choose what we feel. It's always some version of "This is what I want and it's great" or "This is what I want and it's not great but I'll deal with the consequences" or "This isn't really what I want but it's what everyone else wants and  I guess I'll go along with it." And we feel some version of that. We don't choose what we feel. We just feel. And we do the thing and we look back at how we acted and we feel judgment on ourselves (either good or bad). And we hope that we learn. And we see that so often we do, but often we don't learn, also. Watts wants to show us (finally) the secret (and he says it plainly in his interview, also on YT, with Elliott Mintz): "Neither fate, nor free will." It's not determinism. But you don't know what's gonna happen next, at all. Choice is an illusion. Determinists use this as a reason to get sad (or to legitimize immorality), and to fuel their cynicism, because they think that means the ego is stuck in this prison of 'no choice.' When really it means there's no chooser at all, and the feeling of an ego is both illusory and all part of the show. And thus it's not up to you if you see this at all, or if you touch God because of it. You will, but it's not up to you when. Because there's no such thing as choice. At all. And you'll never escape your conscience. Reconcile all that. Hence faith.

I’ve been a life long runner. 50 years now. Whenever I got depressed, or stressed out about anything, I’d put my shoes on and head out the door. Because I knew running would eventually resolve these feelings, they always did. The run starts out just as this guy points out early in his video, with feelings of doubt and desperation. Then once your mind can get a hold of the entire picture of what I was feeling, it slowly makes sense of it all for you. So all of my problems during my runs were solved with my mind. Not therapy, drugs, or friends and family. Just my mind. So when you ever see a runner out running, don’t say to yourself, there goes someone looking out for there physical health. That maybe true, but he, or she is running because of what it’s doing for there mind first, then there bodies. Ask any long term runner how they overcome depression, stress, or anxiety and they will all say, just run.

For the first time in the history of man, the world is at your fingertips and communication to others is actualized. You can be heard by millions. It may not seem like much as we watched its slow progression in our lifetime and may even be taken for granted or even unnoticed. But it is a giant leap for our era of civilization. Being authentic, truly honest and up front with everyone in order to not disappoint or manipulate or misuse is being a good person to both yourself and others was the message I got from this whole speech. I find it so true that often those who pretend to be Saintly are the biggest wolves in sheep's clothing of all. Like most organized religious and cult leaders lie and manipulate others for power or control and or money. Or people that lie and pretend to be good and caring but it's only in order to manipulate others and use them for sex or status or money or something else.. Lol if only I saw as many people in real life following this logic as I see comments on this video thread I'd think I'd have found myself a honest match by now. Truth is most people I've met even the ones who listen to Alan often don't take this man's advice and it's a shame for all of us who exercise such up front authenticity of self with others and repeatedly get lied to by inauthentic narcissistic people who disguise themselves as honest and good and spiritual and such even often lying to themselves while lying to everyone else around them for whatever reasons

What he's talking about here is BOUNDARIES. Good, strong boundaries with utterly EVERYONE in your life. Say no when you mean it. Know how to protect yourself from others, in terms of your emotions. Make rules for others to be in your life. Accept that you are not perfect and a lot of people you meet probably won't like you, and that's normal and ok. You're going to meet ppl you don't care for either. But be civil. Be as kind as you can. Don't overthink anything. Try to roll with life the best you can. Be gentle with yourself, or no one else will❤️❤️❤️

Feeling depressed about something in the short term is normal, but having chronic depression where you just want to cry and aren't motivated to do anything or look after yourself is not part of being human. I had chronic depression from the time I was young and I finally overcame my depression in my 50's. You say you have a myriad of disorder thinking, but I have worked with bipolar and other more extreme highs and lows of emotions and thoughts and it is possible for you to overcome your depression and possibly some of your other symptoms as sometimes they are all connected and when you address one of them the others reduce in intensity or disappear all together. Would you be open to suspending your belief that there is no solution to find out more about therapy method I use to help others overcome their depression?

Understanding frequency helps one understand Alan’s point. Frequency is a system of vibrations, they push and pull, highs and lows at a certain unchanging rate. If we look at our egos emanating a certain frequency, then only those who are in tune with our egos can receive our signals. Only those in tune with us can understand us. Those who are not in tune will not. This is why we should be true to our own egotistic manner. By changing our frequency to be nice, or to be liked or to simply not offend, we pretend to emanate a different frequency and when we go back to our regular frequency, people will think of us as phony, mean and insensitive. The difficulty lies at discovering what our true frequency is. Now don’t confuse true frequency with current frequency, because there is a difference. TASK: Now is the time to emanate your “current frequency”, if you don’t like what it attracts then this is not your “true frequency”. Dialing in your station will take work, but it’s absolutely worth the effort!

One thing to take into account is that fact that this is probably just a snippet of a multiple-hour long lecture. It's not nonsense, you just don't get it. Nobody can really articulate what happens inside your head, but Alan Watts got pretty damn close if you ask me. It's not really that he has a better insight, it's more that he's just really good at explaining things, and sometimes even if it's something we already know deep down, sometimes you still need to hear someone else say it. All he really did was explain the way that he sees the world. I just happen to think he has a beautiful and rather relatable perspective.

I finally get it now. All this time have been trying to ACT nicely. I sacrificed everything I had for my friends. I listened to what other people wanted me to do. I doubled down on whatever they encouraged me to do. Their ideas failed over and over again, I became increasingly resentful. I tried to be humble when inside, I felt a great ego wanting to be released. So I tried to kill my ego. My ego fought back furiously, even took over at certain points and easily solved many long term problems. Trying to hide it, and reproaching myself for ever showing it, has been a toxic endeavor. Now I just want to be myself and effortlessly show my confidence in my work and creativity by simply showing it. No more talking about it.
