Trulicity (also known as Dulaglutide) is a treatment for people with Type 2 diabetes. In this video, we explain in a straightforward way what it is, how it works, the benefits and the side effects. The video also explains how to use the pen so you can administer the drug with the least discomfort.
Thank you for watching my video. Did you find this helpful?
If you have diabetes or prediabetes ( or maybe someone you care about does) and you find the way I explain things helpful then my online diabetes programs and courses will really help you. The videos in the program are not available anywhere else.

Today, I'm going to talk about Dulaglutide or Trulicity. And specifically, I want to show you how to use this pen so you can administer it safely and easily.
So this is a new product used widely around the world and it contains a compound called Dulaglutide. And Dulaglutide is essentially a naturally occurring human chemical called GLP-1 or Glucagon-like protein 1.
And GLP-1's are in essence chemicals that the body produces in response to food. And it does 3 things, if you eat, it increases insulin production out of the pancreas, which helps lower your blood sugar after eating. It also interestingly reduces the amount of sugar that the liver is producing.
Typically the liver produces sugar, and it does this when you are in periods of starvation. So if you like, it is a storage mechanism that can release sugar when your blood sugars are low and then suck it up when your blood sugars are high. In people with Type 2 diabetes, that process is completely impaired and the liver just produces too much sugar.
The third action, which I think is also critical, is it causes a person to feel full. In other words, it increases satiety.
So after eating, what you want to do is increase your insulin reduce the liver sugar and feel full.
All of those 3 things are done by GLP-1 and this is a version of GLP-1.
One of the clever things about re-packaging GLP-1 and changing slightly the way the molecule is and binding it up to, in this case, an antibody, is that you can change the duration of action. And Trulicity is given once a week.
So in order to do it effectively, you choose a day, let's say it is Sunday, something you can remember. Remember, you want to put something in your phone so that you get a reminder each week and you don't forget.
You administer it once a week, and that's done. Pretty simple.
Now let's just look a little bit about how to administer. On the end of this is a cap, and you would remove the cap. And the needle actually is there but you won't see it because it is hidden within the device, which is quite clever.
The other couple of things to say is that there is a lock which is a red triangle and an open and that is so you don't fire the product accidentally when you don't mean to. So we might look at that in more detail.
This is a dummy device, but it does highlight exactly how it gets used.
So essentially you take off the cap, you put it against your skin, you move to the unlock position, and press the button. And you know when it's done when you hear the second click. Which will happen any second now. There it is.
That is safely and easily disposed of in the bins in the normal way
But beyond that simple, easy and likely to achieve for a lot of people pretty good sugar control with a bit of weight loss.

Just took my first dose. It literally took me a couple of hours to build up the confidence. I finally took it and was absolutely surprised that I didn’t feel an ounce of pain. I know it worked, because there was a bit more blood than when I used to take Victoza. For anybody else that gets anxiety from seeing the needle you are going to be ok.... came back to post this message because I kept searching on the internet to see if it would be painful and I hope this helps other folks.

For those who are afraid of pain and needles like me, just try it. I tried it for the first time after stalling for 2 months after my doctor prescribed it to me after seeing how big that needle was when I opened it up. I was kinda relieved when I knew I wasn't the only one afraid after seeing the comments. I came here to see WHERE on the body it is safe and recommended to use the Trulicity injector pen. I've been using mine as a nurse had shown me, on the lower belly, about 2 inches to the LEFT or RIGHT from the belly button and that you should ALTERNATE which side you inject into each week. ( Inject on the RIGHT side one week and then inject on the LEFT side the next week ) I am definitely interested in learning ALTERNATE sites for injection on the body. Also you didn't show how to STERILIZE the injection site before using the Trulicity injector pen. Washing of the hands before handling the injector pen is recommended too.

There are no studies comparing rybelsus with trulicity so far but I suspect trulicity would be more effective. It is taken as an injection once per week compared to rybelsus which you know is a daily tablet. When you take the tablet has a big impact as to how effective it is. The other drug to consider is once weekly ozempic. Ozempic is the same drug as rybelsus but doesn’t have the absorption problem that the pill has.

most medication is synthetic now, and used to treat diseases. If you're not comfortable taking medication, then diet, and exercise to get better control over it. Ignoring controlling diabetes can lead to blindness, and also kidney failure. If your body gets to this point, you have to have your kidneys flushed via dialysis until you can find a donor transplant, if you're lucky.

four reasons not to take Trulicity...1. each dose is $1400 of taxpayers money 2. it causes cancer of the thyroid in labratory animals (read the side effects), 3. It pushes the pancreas to make insulin, and this overworks it, 4. it doesnt really lower blood sugar. I have been on it four months and my fasting bs is almost 155 to 165. Thats steady, but I want under 125. Oddly it lowers a1c a bit but dailies are up a bit. Im going to try Ozempic.
