The fact that he said “Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Goodnight” Christof wanted some grand speech, but Truman got the last laugh by using the line they had heard at the start of every episode.

he wanted Truman to break down, to have an emotional break and return. To admit he was terrified of the outside world. Instead Truman turns, at the words "you're live on the air to the whole world" and realizes he needs to be a part of that world. So, he greets them. For the first time on purpose he greets the world. The world he is about to join. Christof knows it too. He understands with horror that the greeting means he made up his mind to leave.

Saddest and most uplifting part of the film. In touching the wall he confirms his suspicions that everything he knew was a lie, yet at the very same time he is now completely free. I freaking love this scene, and this whole movie.

I kinda wish they would've had a few minutes of movie after he escapes to see what he does or where he goes. What he feels like out of there. But I guess that's as good of time of any to end the series.

In the script, the movie ends after the network head orders the Cease Transmission. The two security guards was a last minute addition.

It was nominated for best director, best supporting actor (for Truman's best "friend") and best original screenplay (losing to Saving Private Ryan, Affliction and Shakespeare in Love respectively). That said, it did win a 3 Golden Globes including one for Jim Carey's (best actor).

I like to imagine nobody ever heard from Truman again, except for perhaps Sylvia. He went and lived a quiet, peaceful life in a remote place, far from anyone who'd recognise him, far from the life of a celebrity. Finally got some freedom and privacy.

I would imagine that would have been very tough for him. It's like raising a wild animal, providing for it's every need into adulthood, then releasing it in the wild and expecting it to be self sustaining. I would imagine Truman would have needed a lot of help in the first few years after leaving the show, building life skills that he did not have to deal with previously. In the first few years, he would likely need to lean on his celebrity to sustain him while building those life skills.

He would absolutely get tons of money still though, the show would have to pay him for his time, for psychological damages etc… and he would also be able to appear as a guest star for money boahblah. But like you said, lean on his celebrity status

To use a line from another great film, Kingdom of Heaven, "A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power."

I love to get lost in the fantasy of the ending to this movie every now and again and inevitably there are always comments about wanting a sequel or some fantasy about what happens afterwards, but this is the way it should be. The rest of his life should be his own and none of our business. Let him be human for what's left of his life.

I'm happy either way. The film is great on it's own, but I'm open to the idea of a second. How would he live with a cult of personality following him, could he sue Kristoff for everything he owns because Kristoff owned everything of Truman's life. There are a great many ways a sequel could go, but in the end I'm content with what we got and more importantly he got.

The original script was more like that. It was much more darker and more "90s" so to speak. And the reveal that it was a tv show would have been a twist later in the film. Look up the original script, its an interesting read!

2:24 This is honestly my favorite part of the scene the music rising then cutting to Truman banging on the wall crying. He’s devastated to find out his whole life was a lie,sure he already knew that but getting 100 percent confirmation is just too much for him and he just lays there. However there is a sense of happiness its the thing he wanted most,something real he even bangs on wall just to check it’s real. God Jim Carrey is an amazing actor.

This is absolutely Jim’s Forrest Gump. It’s his Magnum Opus. A guy who went from making cheesy comedy movies to making one of the greatest movies in modern cinema. Seaside Florida (where this was filmed) is probably the most beautiful city in Florida as some one who was born and raised.

I actually teared up at this scene. With the orchestra playing and no other audio, it hit me almost as much as it hit the character: His life is a lie, he's been lied to by everybody. One of the most beautiful movies ever made.

No one could have done this role justice like he did. I think what makes this scene so powerful, besides the wonderful score, is Carrey’s ability to use his body to say so many things that you just can’t properly put into words. You watch him bang on the wall and begin to fall apart and you know exactly what he’s feeling all without seeing his face for SO LONG. The way he goes from angrily banging against the wall to desperately slapping at it with his limp and open hand as the realization washes over him. You’re with him in every way in that moment. The same thing happens again when the Director is pleading with him. You see the back of his head, the way he reacts to the words being said. Him subtly wiping away his tears before he finally turns around. One of the greatest performances in film, hands down.

Well said.. it comes off as a light hearted movie... but the more and more I dwell on this film the more deeply disturbed and horrified I become. It absolutely is a horroe movie. Everything was fake.... his family friends, every conversation he ever had.... everytime he went to the toilet etc etc... the entire world was watching. He would be a complete wreck after he leaves with permanent emotional damage.. this film is a masterpiece.... because it stays with you long after viewing has finished

To be fair that was the best ending the show could have ever had and the show will be in reruns for decades. Or the five minutes it takes for a lawyer to find Truman and convince him to sue for enslavement, abuse of his likeness, stalking, unjust imprisonment, and any other charges that would have applied the moment he became a legal adult and they could no longer make decisions on his behalf.

I like to imagine Truman going out the exit and going into the real world, already bustling with fans and reporters and journalists crowding the exit. When Truman sees them, he nervously says hi in one of his many cute phrases. The fans begin freaking out and trying to talk to him, reporters are shoving microphones and cameras in his face and journalists are constantly trying to ask him questions. He tried to calm everyone down but they continue and he becomes over stimulated and anxious and begins freaking out. They close in on him and he realizes his only way out would be back through the door. But he can’t do that obviously, or he’s be trapped in the cage again. But to his rescue comes Silvia who yanks him by the wrist and for a second, Truman is freaked out thinking it’s an obsessed fan but face softens when he realizes it’s Silvia. She gives him that smile and pulls him along while the mass of reporters and fans chase them. She pulls him into the passenger seat of her car and tries todrive off but people crowd the car and bang on the windows, demanding for Truman. Truman starts freaking out and tries to tell them to leave, but they don’t listen and try to opens the door. Some of the fans are completely dressed from head to toe in Truman merch and a few even have “Marry me Truman!” With the fan’s head on a bride and his on a grooms, on a customizable shirt. Truman doesn’t know what they’ll do when they get in, but he doesn’t want to know. Silvia honks her horn loudly and tries toget them to move, and that startles some at the front enough for her to pull forward and get out of there. When they reach Silvia’s house Truman sees all the free Truman stuff hanging around. A tear comes to his eye and gives a silly remark about it all. Soon, (perhaps after few days) Silvia tells Truman that they should sue Christof and his company. Truman would love to do that, but since he doesn’t have a cent to his name (given as all his money was props) he had no money to pay for an attorney. Silvia says she can pay for it with her savings but Truman refuses to have her pay with that. Silvia tells him that if the lawsuit was successful they’d get 100s of Millions of dollars that the show made over the last 30 years. But Truman tells her if it isn’t, they’ll be broke or even heavily in dept. But Silvia is confident and wants justice for Truman more than he does. He smiles at this, knowing she truly cares about him. Unlike Meryl. Or anyone on the show to be frank. Truman continues to get harassed by fans in the streets and is sometimes looked at in weird ways. He tried to stay inside but his urge for exploration prevented him from doing so. (He continues to get recognized and harassed by fans until his early 70’s) A week later Truman starts therapy for what happened to him, and he notices in the waiting room a sign was plastered that said the Truman show was always playing there. Before it ended anyway. So as soon as he sat down and brought up a newspaper, he noticed everyone staring at him and made him feel extremely uncomfortable and he shuffled down farther in his seat. When goes to sign in with the front desk lady, her jaw is dropped the whole time and she asks for his autograph. He reluctantly agrees, not wanting any of this attention. His therapist was not a huge fan of the show, but of course, like everyone, knew of its existence. So even he’s surprised when he walked in. Truman’s therapist helps him get over his trauma of everything on the show and his fear of still being filmed or he may still be on tv. After years of therapy, Truman isn’t completely healed. That kind of stuff sticks with you. But he’s much better than what he once was. What about the lawsuit? Well Silvia filed it anyway, and against Truman pleading her not to, she withdrew all her money from all her accounts and got them a really good attorney. After a trial that went on for 3 months, Silvia and Truman were able to squeeze 780.1 MILLION dollars out of the company, and they were both incredibly happy. During the entire thing Christof stared at Truman longingly, as this was his first time seeing him in person. Sometimes he’d catch Christof miming stroking Truman’s hair, like he did with a screen. It creeped him out and made him dislike Christof more than he already did. Silvia and Truman decided with the amount of money they had, they could go to the Fiji islands and do what Truman had always wanted to do. Explore. Every few months Truman and Silvia would leave their home island, Viti Levu (One of the Fiji Islands) and explore one not seen by many. They’d even get to go explore new islands no human had ever stepped foot on. Truman would also go back to American from time to time to do interviews, to make sure they kept a good amount of income. Christof past away from alcohol poisoning, as soon after the show ended he became depressed and drank plenty when Truman was around 54-55. They continued exploring until their late sixties when they decided to retire and live the rest of their lives relaxing on the beautiful islands of Fiji, exploring new places around the world every few months, but for mere vacations and not real “adventuring”. But they got to see just as many new things. There’s my happy ending to Truman’s story :)

I liked that. The movie made Trumans ending ambiguous (as it should) since he's not being filmed anymore and whatever he does with his life is his business and the fans already know too much about him. Your story was interesting to listen to because it delved into the reality of the situation (Truman can never live a normal life of solitude). Another story I heard about is that Christoff chooses another baby and reboots the show and by the time Truman learns about it, it would already be too late, and the new Truman would be in his 70s-80s in a hospital bed surrounded by his fake family, fake friends, etc. Truman decides to let it go to spare the guy the existential crisis and let him die ignorant and happy.

@@SebastienGendron-uk4po that is interesting, but I wonder what would’ve made him take so long to hear about it. Wouldn’t the original Truman be one of the first people to learn about it? Perhaps over tv or overhearing people talking about it, or people coming up to him and be like, “Hey Truman! You’ve seen this?” But if that did happen that’d be really sad. But also, if the new Truman was 70-80 and in his death bed, wouldn’t the og Truman already be dead lol?

@@DaVickster1078 Yeah, I definitely overlooked those points but nonetheless, Truman's fate at the end of the movie is left up to the imagination and needs no real sequel. This begs the question; can Truman even sue them if he was legally adopted by the same corporation? Is he considered an American if you take into account how many documents, they had to forge to fool him into this made-up world? Is Truman considered property?

@@SebastienGendron-uk4po Yeah it’s great for discussion and imagining Truman’s fate yourself. I hope he was able to sue the hell out of them for everything they did. Perhaps since he didn’t even have a contract with the company, would it make it harder to sue? *Is* he considered property? If so, would they have the legal obligation to do whatever they want with him? Christof said if he really wanted to discover the truth, they wouldn’t be able to stop him, yet they *tried* at every turn. Would it be the same about just letting him go? I mean, he’s the most famous person in the world. Does he even have unalienable rights like other Americans? So many questions, that I’m glad are left unanswered. Perfect ending to a perfect movie, with lots of speculations and questions about Truman’s future left for discussion ^^

My opinion is it happens a LITTLE earlier than that. "The episode when you lost your first tooth" That line, at least to me, showcases that despite making a TV show around his life, Christof doesn't realise that, to Truman, those were moments of his life. Not "an episode."

3:01. It shows all this time he's had doubts that maybe he's insane and it shows both happiness and sadness. Happy because he was right, sad because everything and everyone he knew (other than Sylvia) was a lie. Jim fucking acted this so well.

OMFG! Jim Carrey. 2:20 that utter sense of despair that just sinks into his face. He acted this scene absolutely PERFECT. Then later 3:00 the anguish that hits him. That he was right the whole time. Yet he still unable to be in control of his life. Who woulda thought a man of comedy, coulda presented such a devastatingly emotional and dramatic scene. Jim Carrey is an absolute legend.

The specific part of this scene, when Truman desperately slams his hand against the wall, always really gets to me. The man has come so far and suffered so long in his confused attempt to understand and get free of his prison, yet here in the end he still can't escape. Between the music and the performance, this scene is masterful.

I love the duality of the 2 soundtracks in this ending. A more sad, but peaceful track when he is sailing. Representing him thinking he is finally at peace but sad because we as the audience all know that the peace he feels is short lived and fake. But then when he finds out and goes to the exit the soundtrack is more grandiose and satisfying. Representing that he can finally have TRUE peace without anyone watching his every move, but also a satisfying ending for both us as the real life audience and the fictional audience watching truman say his goodbye and leave the dome. Sorry if yall were expecting an in depth analysis of this scene but this is the best I've got. Let's just all agree, this is one of the best movies ever made.

That last piece is actually reused from an earlier film - Mishima:A Life In Four Chapters, by Paul Schrader. Ironically it's used in that film for the moment when Mishima kills himself.

2:03 This, to me, is the saddest part of the whole movie. He realizes from here that he was right about everything being a set up, but then the gravity of the situation crashes on him that he was trapped since birth. And the music just really settles that mood.
