This is so helpful, just what I was hoping for in a review. I just tried out the Shew Model, and it's wonderful, but I was also curious about the artist's model.......I plan to donate, to thank you very much.

Thank you Slidegrease and welcome also! The Shew is fantastic eh? I have the 6 series, and it's one of the most efficient instruments I've tried, and works well with all mouthpieces. Take care and thank you again for donating. Jonathan

Well done Jon! There’s surprisingly little comparisons out there between these two trumpets which is odd I think. I think people are wary of saying anything negative so it’s good to get an honest opinion. I think you’re absolutely right, the New York sounds like a bigger instrument so it makes sense that it’s more demanding. My favourite part was that you managed to say that the Bach 37 is like a pint of Pride. Good work! It is too!

I am looking for the trumpet where the reviewer says: " take care not to put in any effort or else you go straight over the double high c" For the rest, I think these trumpets must be heard too in a big orchestra since that's where they are designed for. They probably carry there well but there is no sharpness so they will probably not shine in a big band or worse in a marching band.

Any updates or further thoughts after a year? I stumbled on this video and found it very information, thank you for doing this! I've been playing a Bach 37 for almost twenty years for my Bb, but picked up the Gen III Yamaha Chicago C trumpet a year ago and really love it. Now it has me thinking about adding a Yamaha Bb, but I'm not sure whether to go with the New York (maybe more familiar coming from the Bach 37), or the Chicago Bb (could be a great companion to the Yamaha Chicago C). Thoughts? I'm mostly an orchestral player, nothing too serious, but pretty good community and semi-pro groups. Also the occasional brass quintet and church gigs here and there. Thanks again!!

Thanks for the reply SinnMaster! Excellent question and points, I should revisit these instruments as all opinions are naturally evolving. I have to say I have never played a bad Yamaha or one that doesn’t work in context, so you can’t go wrong. Weirdly I prefer the large bore Xeno Bb, simply because I find it quite even and predictable blowing wise throughout the registers. As an overall Bb I’d say these artist models are “better”, but better isn’t always easier haha:) If you love the Chicago C then absolutely you’ll love those Bb’s. It’s very tough to choose between them, but i would say start with the Chicago Bb. Make sure you really road test it and find out how you get on when you’re a bit tired, this is often when you find out the truth. I hope that helps. Both are fabulous and won’t leave you disappointed, they just won’t play themselves.

Thanks for the review! I’m in doubt about this two models and the Edwards X13 for jazz playing (expecting to also have a warm sound). What would be ur pick among this 3 models? Thanks! :)

I can’t speak for the Edwards, for Jazz personally I’d be leaning to the NY.

Any info you could provide with the 9335 VS 2 Allen Vizzutti horn? I know it’s based off the New York. Have you tried one? I’ve heard it’s a good half way between the two. Any input?

Hi Kyle, thanks for getting in touch. I’ve just today reviewed the Gen 1 Vizzutti separately alongside a Kanstul. It has different slides and valve stem from the NY, and plays a lot lighter and spritely. Check out the review, more thoughts are covered. Hope that helps, all the best. Jon

Looking for a New York for my son, but very confused over gen 2, mark IV etc. which model is the latest? Thanks

There are three generations, but the latest is I believe referred to as “05”. To be safe simply ask for the “third generation model”. There is one for sale on Buy and Sell Brass Uk on Facebook.

Yes indeed, they are not cheap. The follow up service is very good I must say, and Yamaha are great at helping you if you want things tweaked or adjusted. Its worth looking at second hand Gen 1s, they play great too! Hope that helps. Best wishes. J
