The shocking thing about all this is that Dyatlov was actually one of the first to acknowledge that the reactor exploded in real life. He also was never so arrogant and all as portrayed in the show. If you want to know more check out That Chernobyl Guys' Half lives Anatoly Dyatolv

You know I'm not taking sides here. But the men are only as good as the instituations that train them, the men that lead them, and the countries that harbor them. The sad part is that no one there could have done anything differently. They had their data and their orders and would have been killed or imprisoned if they didn't follow. I mean they had the guards come to force the one guy to look into the core and report back.

this series did a wonderful job to make someone the villain even though he wasnt .... his orders help reactor 3 to be safe .... or else it wouldnt have been unit 4 but unit 3and 4 .... after seeing his interview ..... i was very clear of the fact that he knew what he was doing ..... u cant do something which u dont know ....the safety manual never mentioned about the az5 leading to a atom bomb which noone had expected ... RIP to all the victims of chernobyl

Exactly. I was just about to write about this. I understand making him the bad guy in the series helped to the audience to better understand the cause, however, in reality, Djatlov was no villain. He worked hard to get to his position with an expert understanding of nuclear plant reactors. He was hard, yes. But the show, at least, shows the audience that he actually did not know about AZ-5 reaction consequences because it was just hired to him. That makes him actually a victim of the regime. So at the end the audience understands it was not his fault. At least technically not.
@beanz2494
@beanz2494 10 ай бұрын
The problem is they should not have even needed the az5 for a routine safety test. But yes, not just his fault
@jakubw.2779
@jakubw.2779 10 ай бұрын
Yes, it wasn't entirely his fault as he did not know about the critical flaw of the reactor but there were several points in this test which he, as an chief engineer should take as a warning and cancel the test. He did not. He persisted to complete the test, despite unfavorable and even dangerous conditions

I re-watched Chernobyl again and I was so furious at Anatoly in the first episode that I stopped watching and googled his name just to "make sure justice was served", this is how I found out the truth, and now I feel sad for him. Thankfully, I can keep watching the show now knowing that his character is pure fiction.

Diatlov was only one screw in the whole clock. It was a matter of time before this catastrophe occurred, tests of this kind were performed before and surely if Diatlov was successful those tests surely executed in the future. The whole system of nuclear reactor safety practices was inadequate at that time.

@@neilkurzman4907 Safety systems were not in the way of test. If I remember correctly INSAG reported even with safety systems in place outcome of Chernobyl disaster possibly is still the same. It was not the key for disaster, its construction of reactor itself plus its systems allowing too much control of the reactor and many more reasons. I recommend watching MIT lecture about Chernobyl disaster.

Dyatlov never should've been anywhere near chernobyl that night. His screaming incompetence had already caused 2 meltdowns on nuclear subs when he worked as a nuclear engineer for the soviet navy, one of which resulted in the death of his son from leukaemia. With a record like that anywhere else in the world he'd have been sweeping floors at a dollar store, but because the communist system rewarded incompetence he was allowed to continue his career.

But somehow you assume that in the capitalist system that he couldn’t have also survived and thrived. People who cut corners get things done. Higher ups like that. When something bad happens, the same people will try and see who they can pass the blame down to.

@@Hammerhead547 So if you’re trying to say, is you never work for a large corporation before? They do stupid stuff all the time. It’s why some of them fail so spectacularly. No, sometimes being the best and brightest, doesn’t rise you to the top and capitalism. It’s the willingness to crush and destroy anybody who gets in your way. Being willing to screw anybody over, and break any law. It off and works until it doesn’t. Try not to put human factors into your story about communism. Capitalism has its own set of problems.

Unlikely. The scale and nature of what happened made it impossible for anyone in western Europe to ignore. And it happened on the soviet bloc. (admittedly the radiation did travel to western Europe). Moscow would eventuality not have a choice. Someone with a big enough mouth would eventually demand a straight god damn answer from Russia because of the random Alarming radiation coming from the east. Let's say Moscow did the opposite and kept tight lipped about it...Right-o. Send up the black birds or what ever latest and greatest fastest thing they have. Or turn every god damn satellite on the soviet union and eastern block. They would eventually find out themselves. Which in theory would be an even worse outcome for Moscow and one giant propaganda win for the west. "oh look what Moscow tried to keep quiet when asked several times about what the hell was going on" Not enough to start a full blown war. And if it did...well... Mutually assured destruction would mean chernobyl is no longer a concern.
