how well does it maintain the temperature ie will it stay cool all night That's my biggest problem with a system like that
@Ezmoneyash2 ай бұрын
It depends on how hot it is or cold it is outside and how well your bunk is INSULATED just like a house. If you have a well insulated bunk which I do and during this season it cuts on to maintain the temperature more often. But in the winter I use it less bc my bunk holds heat well. Does that answer your question?

I understand the fuel cost, however the lost engine hours is staggering. The average engine gets 20,000 - 25,000 engine hours before a rebuild. You’ll lose an average of 3000 engine hours a year. That’s the BIG MONEY, not to mention the after treatment care from idling- fuel costs etc …. It’s foolish not to have an APU. Picking the right one is the question.
@Ezmoneyash9 ай бұрын
Where’d you get the 3000 from ? And what source told you that you have to replace an engine because it “idled” too much? The figure of 20-25k hours is assuming a full load is being pulled.

@@Ezmoneyash it’s pretty common knowledge about engine hours. Talk to any diesel shop, freightliner, Peterbilt, anyone who does rebuilds. 10 hours a night times 25 nights a month is 250 hours, times 10 months is 2500 hours, this doesn’t include 34 hour resets. The 3000 is an average. When I buy trucks, the first thing I look at is engine hours, engine hours are more important than miles. Make sure the ECM is original and the engine hours can be verified. If not I won’t buy the truck. I’ve seen plenty of trucks with 450,000 miles and 22,000 + engines hours. The last truck I sold was a 2017 579 had 650,000 miles but only 12,000 or so engine hours, still plenty of life left in the engine.

@@Ezmoneyashwhen you speak to a shop, make sure they know what they’re talking about. You probably already know out of 50 diesel mechanics you might find 2 or 3 that are trustworthy.

According to the department of energy long haul trucks avg about 1800 hours per year idling. Specifically for idle smart the amount of time idling can be set to a standard time length controlled by you using the dashboard. You don’t idle all night if you don’t intend for your truck to idle. But there is no maintenance costs which APU have that cost multiple times throughout the year plus a $10k upfront cost for a new one. That’s half the cost of a new engine 😂

@@Ezmoneyash I’m not sure how many folks from the department of energy spend in truck stops or on the road, but from experience I can tell you most folks are idling way more than that. Over the summer I was parked at Jubitz and the fellow next to me idled 4 days straight 😂, he could have got a hotel for that. I know there’s a lot of factors and my point is this- definitely use an APU, nothing good is coming out of idling. For me and my small trucking company I’ll never move a truck OTR without an APU. Always check the engine hours before buying a truck, load or no load the truck only has so many hours it can run 😊
