I feel like Mean girls just fundamentaly does not work for a modern audience.

Do tell more. At first reaction, agreed. The first movie didn’t have social media. You had to address more issues in person back then (even if it was passive aggressively). Perhaps that’s why Gossip Girl was initially captivating as it started to modernize “burn book” in website form.
