If you use a medical dropper with 99% isopropyl alcohol, you can apply a small drop on the suspect component and that will cool off the component to test it. Thanks for the video Peter.

Vielen Dank 73 Peter

Hi peter very interesting fault finding
@jimwolsiffer43974 ай бұрын
Interesting problem, in the beginning thinking it's an active device issue, most don't consider the diode as an active though. Such an odd fault for sure as I bet temp increase was pretty small. A bench test of the diode biased on and measuring current would be of interest to folks like me. Regarding the freeze mist, I have had some luck actually freezing the end of a blunt instrument and then holding it on suspect parts. Even used a finish nail that I ground somewhat smooth on the end for this. It wastes more mist but in a crowded board it can be worth it. Keep up the great work, love the journey in fault finding, we all learn so much from your schooling!

Did you use the age old system of fault finding of, 50%. Check the path at the 50% point, if it goes away move the test point 50% towards the input. if it says move 50% towards the output. keep repeating until the find the small section were the signal breaks. nice that you found the leaky diode. I had a FT480 where one glass diode fractured in two due to temperature cycling over the years, I could not see the break until i unsoldered one leg and it fell apart. never seen a diode with such a clean break.

Exzellente Fehlersuche Peter.

Peter why did you not use a thermal camera since you knew it was a thermal problem ? *Cheers* *73*
@sw61884 ай бұрын
A thermal camera would not have identified the problem. The diode would not be generating enough heat for it to show up on the screen.
@TRXLab4 ай бұрын
That is the point the fault is not a short it is a leakage only and as already said a thermal cam can not see the leakage....
@TKomoski4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply's I assumed that it was a thermal problem as Peter stated all a long
@sw61884 ай бұрын
@@TKomoskiA better description may have been a 'thermally sensitive fault'. In other words a component that changes its behavior based on the ambient temperature.

Long time subscriber here. Love your videos! I was wondering if you might know why mine, as well as a few others ft891s limit HF and ssb power to 50 watts after firmware update or mars mod. I have contacted yaesu and they don't have any idea. Curious if you have any thoughts on this. Cheers!

you talk too much about things that don't have anything to do with the actual problem. on this particular radio, if it receives a signal, rather than describe the whole thing over and over and over. move forward faster Through the stages. I do like the actual repairs, but you just take too much time to get there. I find it hard not to jump forward in your videos by several minutes until you get to the heart of the problem.
