I just wanted to add a different perspective to those who write that 8 mins was too long for what was shown in this video and who question the need for the story told at the beginning of the piece. Firstly, if your life is so busy you can’t spare 8 mins then you obviously are just too busy to meaningfully and regularly practice the guitar which as everyone knows is a life long commitment. Secondly, there is a thing called the swipe button which lets you fast forward in a video if you need to and lastly, and most importantly, rather than just criticize and take, how about you give thanks to those who put their time and effort in to making these videos to share their experience and wisdom for us. I for one appreciate it and it is both grossly unfair and unrealistic to ask that every video meet YOUR exact needs and it is perhaps worth remembering there are many others whose needs, expectations and wishes differ to your own. So in sum, well done to the author and don't be put off - there are always fans who may not hear from but whose lives you touch so keep up the good work.

I always called them "drone" chords because of the drone sounding strings playing the same note. I've also heard them called "Church chords" because of how many contemporary Christian songs use them. Just now discovered your channel. Very nice lesson! It's good that you're naming the chords after their root note on the D string. However, you can also name each of these chords as a type of E chord, since E is the root note of them all. Then, to add spice in any song where you need to play an E major chord, substitute any of these along the fretboard. This is the type of stuff that would have kept me playing the guitar and never giving it up for many years. I've been back playing now for almost 9 years and will never again quit until this body does.

Fret markers on your guitar would help the visualization. Great lesson.

Thanks from Louisiana. In the late 80's I drove a big truck and picked up one hitchhiker. He was actually at a truckstop and needed a ride. I got my first guitar in rehab at the age of 18, and still have it. A Kent classical. I wrote my first 'full length' song in the truck and really enjoyed your lesson on the power chords. I play all open and the second formation will be tough to get, but it's so cool to slide up or down and use it with the 'E' formation, I will practice. Much obliged.

This was fun. I've been a cowboy chords player for decades now. I've usually had to sing while I play, so it's hard to branch out and try new things. I don't even play barre chords very well. Your playing just amazes me. I'd love to hear your whole musical story.

This is really valuable information. The ringing of the open strings adds a beautiful ethereal quality to the chords. Such a beautiful guitar too. Note, for those E and D type power chords up the neck that are discussed towards the end of the video, I prefer to use my first third and fourth fingers as opposed to first, second and third. I find it to be a more comfortable fingering, much less of a stretch, and I get a cleaner sound - but that's just a personal preference.

I never understand why guitar teachers don't teach power chords from day one. It would open up a lot of songs for beginning students and also teach them where all of the notes on the fretboard are.

Nice easy,simple lesson, very helpful. Guitar sounds really nice but the main thing I've learned from this lesson is never hitch hike 😀

Basically, a power chord is an open fifth. What you demonstrated was doing power chords with open "drone" strings. I actually teach a song that uses the E chord with open strings moving it to the A and then back down to the G position before returning to the root position as an introduction to Barre chords. Another way to use power cords is without hitting the drone strings. The song "Everlong" by David Grohl (from the Foo Fighters) is comprised of power cords in a drop D tuning. Regarding the story at the beginning of the video, ... While I can see how it's a bit extraneous to the lesson, having hitchhiked cross country in the 70s myself, I rather enjoyed the story.

Some really useful info here and some nice sounds. I had always thought of "power chords" as being chord with only roots and fives that could function as either a major or minor.

You can slide the power chord down further, to get a C or a B too. I often use, those forms in certain songs. You can slide it it up to get a G even, though I will often move the same shape across to the bass side and get more power chords on those strings, though that will usually require muting the G string, or else fretting it to get the 3rd of the chord-but then it isn’t a power chord anymore, just a nice bassy sounding triad which leaves lots of room for the vocal or a higher lead instrument. Stuff learned over the years. You have other options than what Mel Bay showed us.

I was hitch hiking the other day and this truck driver pulled up carrying a load of cars, he told me there was no room in the cab but I can get in one of the cars, turned out he really liked picking up hitch hikers so we had all the cars filled. And then there is the idea that someone will click on a thumbnail for a reason. They might want to learn what was seemingly offered and then go back to practicing. Maybe the thumbnail could be a bit more specific about what's coming up or segmenting the timeline as many others do so that the part that was interesting from the thumb could be found directly. There's always the reality that one might not want to waste time that they can never get back, but rather devote it to practicing and studying music.

Just cause the lesson doesn't work for ur self growth in guitar doesn't mean it doesn't help others so don't be so egotistical about the things in life the world does not revolve around U 4:24
