In this lesson, I give you a quick 5-minute warmup you can use before you play ukulele to get the hands, fingers, and mind ready to play. If you struggle with stiff fingers then consider incorporating a warmup before you practice to increase blood flow and stretch the muscles. These 5 easy exercises can be used to warm up the fretting hand and strumming hand and work towards coordinating those together to make music.

Another exercise someone showed me is what she called the spider. Without playing any notes, you place all 4 fingers on the 1st string on the first 4 frets, and one by one walk then to the next string, then the next, then the last, and then walk them back down. It's also good for teaching your fingers (and brain) to work independently.

I am 61 and just learning how to play ukulele. I’ve played instruments in my much younger years (clarinet, saxophone and guitar). I like your videos because you go slow and describe what you are doing although I struggle with strumming and want to use my thumb up and down. I will continue to practice using your videos. Thanks for showing me (slowly) how to play.

So good to see you again Brett! This is an important exercise. Scales are overlooked. To be honest I didn’t think the ukulele had scales 😟 I thought it was just the piano, yup I’m not musically minded. Anyway I will have a go ..... my knuckles need to limber up! Thank you for the lesson young man!! Love from Winnie x

Definitely giving it a try tomorrow (again). Thank you for your tutorials - it's a pleasure to watch them. For some reason strumming is a problem for me. My fingernails can't hit every string the same way , so some of them sound louder than others. 🙄 Maybe I should use a plectrum. (Kidding) I will try to get that in balance.

That's a good observation to make about your playing! The goal is to find a consistent strumming motion and sound. Keep working at it!

I've just started learning ukulele yesterday(at home). Then i searched ukulele beginner tutorials on youtube & I found your 8 yrs ago video “5 effective strumming lessons”. It’s so helpful for me🥺🥺 because the way you speak is too patient and too easy for me to understand than other ukulele teachers on youtube. (As i'm Asian & don't know English very well🥺). Thank you so much. And now i only wanna learn from this channel🥺 Can you tell me abt which videos and playlists should i learn first from your channel sir? 😥 Cus i found many videos in your youtube channel and don't know what to learn first. 😟😟

I can see and feel how the scales exercise will warm the fingers up but also help with finger dexterity in general. Are you playing a concert or tenor sized ukulele?

I think the key point of a serious ukelele player is not songs u can play is the exercises u do and so as the skills improving during it. And with fingers warming u will get a better result and u can go far on this road 。 ps I am from Asian. Thanks very much on this exercise . We need it more than songs

The chromatic scale in this video is inaccurate. It skipped the open strings creating a whole step in place of all half steps.
@UkuleleTricks
@UkuleleTricks 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, but the point of this exercise is not to play a chromatic scale note-for-note but rather to warm up the fingers using a specific fretting hand finger pattern, not note pattern.

I recommend starting with the first chromatic scale exercise and focus on that before adding it or the other exercises into your warmup repertoire. For the chromatic scale exercise, just take it a string at a time as demonstrated, and you will begin to see progress. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
