The reason why hard candies like those are considered emergency foods is not just to be a mood booster! To summarize Steve1989MREInfo's words from his 1943 Life Raft Rations video, the reason why hard candies are chosen over any other food sources is due to the nutritional density of the food itself while also not dehydrating yourself in the process of eating it. They gave packs and packs of JUST hard candies to people stuck at sea!

I love that the first item was what some people here in the US called "old folks' candy" -- the sort of hard candies one might find in an open bowl at grandparents' home for any visitor to enjoy... but likely unchanged and untouched since the last time one visited! The rice and the pasta were both very impressive -- making them edible with just room-temperature water is a real boon for true emergencies!

my mom always keeps some long-lasting hard candies in her car, just for the occasion she has to drive very late at night. she gets really sleepy driving in the dark, (like, sleepy enough to nod off), so she always has something sugary and preferably sour to keep her awake and alert.

The candy isn't just for fun. They aren't thirst provoking which matters in an emergency where safe water may be unavailable. It provides rapid glucose and is lightweight, durable and extremely portable with an almost unlimited shelf life.
