We have to be honest, guava is not one of our favorite fruits. With over 170 different fruiting trees, vines and shrubs here on the farm it's easy to be picky. However, when it comes to guavas, can we find one that really makes us serious about adding more of these fruit to our farm? Today we're trying 6 different guava varieties to find out!

Hello, I am in zone 10A and I grow Red Malaysian guava and Mexican Cream Guava. Both are very sweet and have a tropical flavor. I have noticed extreme heat will force the guavas to fall off the tree before they have a chance to grow full size and ripen. This changes the flavor of the fruit. 😌

Hey there Melissa. I'm glad to hear you're having success with these in SoCal. I (Duane) grew up in Gardena and remember having guava as a kid that I remember being very good. I don't recall the type, but what you're saying about the weather may be the thing we're having a problem with!

When the fruit getting as your thump size clip off the end after the fruits so the nutrients goes to the fruits instead to the branches and leaves, this help saving the fruits from falling off. IMHO.

When I first encountered guavas a few years ago, I would have sworn that a cat had peed in the room. You couldn't have paid me to eat them. Now, I can't get enough of them! If their crazy smell wafts in the grocery store, I'm drawn like a magnet. I grew 2 trees from seed and the one that has fruited was delightful. Guava is blended into many drinks and I think it has good vitamin C (hence the tart strawberry / pineapple vibe) and you guys might just grow to love it! Don't forget their best attribute, beautiful leaves that LOVE THE HEAT :) I should also mention that I did eventually try them because there are some white varieties that are eaten crunchy and less ripe (in Asia I think) and don't have the smell. It was my "gateway guava" so to speak.

This is encouraging to hear Lauren. They're starting to grow on us a bit and our pink guavas are much better than the white. Like you're saying, it could just be that the white needs to be a bit less ripe.

I grew up eating guavas and I find the guavas in the stores here in Canada to be bland. I blame it on long storage or harvesting before they are ready. Also, the seedy part is where flavor resides. Don't chew the seeds: Just gently chew the fruit and stop before you crash the seeds. That's how you disperse the seeds 😉 . And, there are salty red/ pink guavas too. I'd like to see your faces when you try them.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm

Hey Brigid, great notes here on dealing with the seeds. We tend to avoid them when we can, but like you're saying, that is some of the sweetest flavor in that area. We'll have to give that a shot with the next one we eat. Thank you!

I recommend to keep trying and the key is to make sure they are at a good stage of ripeness. I'm not a guava expert by any means, but I do like the flavor profile of guavas in general. My favorite guavas so far, and I highly recommend you try these, are pineapple guava, lemon guava and Mexican cream guava mostly because these can be very sweet if eaten at the correct ripeness. There are several varieties of pineapple guava aka Feijoas. I've also had some horrible guavas that were growing in the wild which were sour and/or bitter.

We don't actually eat very ripe guavas as you do. We pick and eat them still a little firm. Very ripe guavas are usually reserved for jams or for cooking a kind of soup (sinigang sa bayabas) Glad to see you got to try the purple/red Malaysian 🤣, not what I expected though but try planting it. It's a very pretty purple/red plant. My last suggestion for guavas would be if you can find the big kilo variety of guavas. At least that one you can't go wrong, they are big (hence the kilo - they weigh that much) and have more flesh than seed parts. They are eaten green (unripe) either on its own or a bit of chili salt.

I planted a ruby supreme guava in 2021, it served hurricane Ian. The tree started at 4ft, now has been kept to 8ft. first fruit bearing was 2 and they grew to about baseball size. Not too much flavor, but adding sugar and lemon, tasted like store bought juice (really good). So I loaded up the tree with lots of tree food and 6 months later, tree had around 140 green guava slightly bigger than golf balls. Tropical sweet to me, really isn't sweet. as I thought guava would be sweet like Fuji apples, but they are not. I know this because I bought fresh guava from supermarket, and they tasted just like my tree fruit. Anywho, ruby supreme guava tree now bears fruit year around, with flowers, green fruit, and ripe fruit all the time. In the short time my tree literally has given me almost 400 fresh fruit. It makes really good juice as long as you add lemon juice and sugar. Now I'm working on my first macadamia nut tree.

I got some lemon guava from walmart last summer that were ok but they were loaded with seeds and so far I have not been able to get any of them to germinate. I have some pink ans some strawberry guava seedlings I started back last summer so I don't have any fruit from them yet but they are going to have to be container plants because the winters here will kill them. I hope they are better than what you thought of the ones you taste tested. I would like to try some of the Chilean guavas one variety was supposed to be one of the English queens favorites, and the flavors described by the guy who was taste testing them sounded really good those are about 1/2" or so in diameter depending on the variety.

Hey Loren. We've had a lot of folks give us suggestions on how to make these guavas taste better and I've come to the conclusion that a big part of the flavor issue we are having is in the ripeness of the fruit and also the environment they're grown in. We are VERY hot and dry in the summer and extremely cold in the Winter. That's a heck of a lot different from the areas they will grow in naturally (like Hawaii!). The fact that you'll be growing them in containers may actually be a HUGE benefit.
@lorenbush8876
@lorenbush8876 Жыл бұрын
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I hope so, thanks. It would be much better if they did not have so many seeds. So Have you planted Pineapple Guava? I was able to buy a couple of tress or bushes (depends on how they are grown) Several years ago, I never got a crop after the first year, I showed my little guy that the Blossoms were sweet and edible and every year the blossoms just seemed to vanish before the pollination process finished. -MG

We do have a pineapple guava up front as well, but much like you we have yet to get fruit to maturity. We did get a small fruit set on a pair of them on the old property, but they wound up falling from the tree well before they were ripe. It's awfully hard to keep from eating those flower petals though!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I was going to skip responding, because I figured you already knew this, but "just in case" to get a set of fruits you need to hand pollinate. I took a cluster of flowers from one bush and used it like a large broom. Basically I took the small bunch of flowers and touched them to the flowers on the other plant giving the cluster a shake in the process. The method seemed to work for me, but I only did it once, it was after that my efforts were in vain.. :) -MG

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm all my guavas grow to fast, i cut them back twice a year. they love water and need a lot. when the rainy season hits i get missive blooms and fruit set, so many i don't even bother with them, i give them to neighbors and many just rot on the ground. the best time to pick is when they get large and full but still green on the outside and slightly soft when you squeeze. i eat them semi green they have a sweet green apple taste. rip guavas are candied and taste very good if you eat sugary things, i don't eat sugar at all. the white guava from seed started producing this year on its 3rd year. my thai white isn't looking so good. let's see if it survives this year, i can always buy another.
