as far as granulating colours go, i really like their permanent mauve (manganese violet)! i picked some up from a local art shop a while ago, and it does super cool colour separating! (plus if you put a little honey or glycerin in it as you put it in a pan or well it won't be finicky about rewetting) i also love their winsor yellow :D

W&N professional was the colours I was taught watercolour with, and they are still my absolute favorites, though I've never tried the tubes. That said, I live in europe, and I have never bought any of the colours at full price. The pans are extremely pigmented, and just last forever, and I find the paint to be really great to my rather tight, detailed style. I especially love their own 'winsor' serie of pigments, that gives you a full set of beautiful cold and warm primaries, as well as secondaries, at a great price.

I had a similar experience, I went straight from Corman to a 24 set box of professional W&N and just did not understand them at all! After a while of learning colour theory and about the pigments And trying out other brands I went back to them and liked them. They are very good for more subtle work and have a very English feel to the way they are formulated. I added around a dozen personal choice colours, dumped a few that made no sense to me and now the box is personalised to my preferences I really like it. There are some special colours I had to have because I am a pigment nerd, and because they are gorgeous. Not all have gone into the W&N box though. A few wound up in a historic colour palette by Bill Colori because they were more at home with those colours. I am lucky enough to live in the U.K. where I can take advantage of special offers or discounts on these paints, I know they are hideously expensive in some places. Glad you are giving them another chanceThe thing I like best about them is they do what I want them to do. I get impatient with paint that gives me too much at a time, or looks ok wet but dries to nothing. And they mostly seem pretty reliable. My one complaint is I had a horrible Aurelian that turned a very murky colour in the box. It was quickly disposed of and replaced! Your demo gives a good idea of how well they layer. Always like to watch you painting. Thankyou.

My first proper watercolour set was the Cotman 45. I love vibrant colours and they were a lot of hard work for vibrancy. There are many other paints I would choose over them for student grade paints now. My top pick is Van Gogh ATM but there are several I haven't tried. My next set was the mission gold 36 tubes + palette and the difference is night and day. They really pack a punch and didn't cost me much more than the Cotman. A whole lot more paint, professional watercolours, around $20-30 difference in price. I do have WN professional tubes but some are are almost impossible to rewet and are better used straight from the tube... The ones that do rewet are lovely. They are just not my preferred brand.

I really really love W&N. Their Green Gold in light washes is magic! Like the sunlight is shining through green leaves. There is a magic golden light from within. It is also very useful for mixing skin tones. Rose Dore is a very unique color, and I love the Light Red. Oh, and I forgot their New Gamboge, like golden sunlight! The bright colors are all very good in my opinion, very transparent and luminous. The downside with W&N are the other earth tones, I prefer Schmincke's earth tones. I am living in Germany. Greetings!! Dana

yes, love this comment! I love W&N, their colours are really great, except earth tones (you can't get burnt umber or raw Sienna or burnt Sienna as a single colour, REALLY, W&N?). I also like their jewel tones line, they give you some nice hues for alternative basic pallete. And their transparent orange is so good, and neutralizes so well with phtallo colours. Also their Winsor Yellow is the most perfect, neutral yellow - good for everything. Winsor Red on the other hand feels a little bit too opaque and artificial to be honest. Other favorites - Cobalt teal, Potters Pink, Phtallo Turqouise (PB16), Perylene Maroon (very nice shade)

Thank you for making a video about the W & N watercolour paints. Here where I live, they are very commonly used by artists. Options are quite limited here, but we are slowly seeing newer brands coming in from other countries.

I love Winsor&Newton pro watercolors. They were and continue to be a favorite of mine. If there is one complaint I have about this line, it's that some of their earth tones are fairly weak and tend to streak a little, but then again that is not really an issue for me, as I simply do not have to buy those. And there are some lovely earth tones in that line as well, such as their naples yellow deep, gold ochre and their caput mortum violet. And they have such beautiful perylenes! I know that a lot of people do not like Winsor and Newton, for various reasons, but as for me, none of their products have disppointed me. I love their pro watercolors, I love their gouache, and for what they are, I even like their Cotman watercolors.

Congratulations on getting a big sponsorship! I hope it will be a lot of fun and will lead to even more opportunities. That being said, I want to warn any beginners watching this video: if you are using Cotman paints (the student-grade paints of W&N), then the problem IS with the paints and not with your skills. They are notoriously difficult to activate, and don't behave like the watercolours you see in tutorials.

I've been using the windsor and newton cotman travel set. I recently bought a few more tubes. Honestly, for my price and experiene I don't want to spend a ton of money on the profressional line. The tubes are much better experience than the half pans. I can get soooo much more paint all at once because I find that the pans take a while to activate and my house is always dry and drying them out as I work..... The big thing was getting actual watercolor brushes too. I'm happy with my set for now. I feel like I have a lot to learn and I don't always time to paint. I'll upgrade when I'm ready.

Thank you for the lovely video, like James here, I also get so inspired! I find Winsor&Newton to be a great middle- regarding subtlety - I place them between Mission Gold (huge pigment intensity pay out, excellent for single layer washes) and Sennelier/Lukas (super fine pigments with gentle intensity, great for layering glazes and botanic work).

W&N professional isn't bad, per se, I am just finding them severely overpriced and rather overhyped, especially here where they are the default watercolour option for every art supplies store. Also the way I work I now vastly prefer M.Graham and Rosa Gallery/White Nights. I also detest that they decided not to disclose pigments in their cadmium-free new range, meaning that we might be getting same pyrrols and naphtols we had all these years only in shiny new renames (and I hope it is just those and not something more dangerous).

Honestly, the same thing kinda happened with me and prismacolor colored pencils. When i first tried them, i didnt know how to mix the colors and absalutely hated how soft they were. (I was used to stiffer pencils like crayola) but i was really inexperienced in using colored pencils at the time and didnt have a good grasp of a lot of art principles and color theory. But i recently really needed to buy some for an art class and they are actually pretty nice and not as bad as i thought. Im still not the biggest fan of them, but mostly because im pretty heavy handed and i just dont prefer the medium. (water color is just more fun). But overall, the brand is pretty good and blending with them is nice.

I just recently set up a limited WN pro palette as well. IDK why but I never really was interested in them.. I have a few colors tossed in here or there but not a full palette. I think my early experiences with Cotman left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm still undecided on them, I've done one full work and it's a bit dull... it could be the paper but my tests on the paper with another brand came out vibrant. They don't seem to glaze/layer very nicely. Still playing with it. Definitely 1000x better than the Cotman though. Mine is a split primary transparent single pigment, plus burnt sienna (except for New Gamboge which is two pigments). I've been setting up little brand palettes in the small ceramic flower 7wells and really loving them. There is just something about the weight and feel of ceramic, plus they are really nice to stick a brush in.

I personally don't see how one can dislike a brand of artist grade watercolor. At the end of the day they're all mostly made up of pigment and gum arabic, with the exception of QOR. It's possible that I feel this way because my way of painting is quite loose and I don't require a huge amount of control over the paint, I'm not sure. I think most of our preferences and brand loyalty comes down to what the people that taught us and that we admire use or used, even if artists might not be aware of that. Long story short, I love ALL the paint lmao

I concur. I paint rather tight and some of my favourite pigments are from Winsor & Newton, but I also have Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Holbein DaVinci, M Graham and QOR and love them all. Not saying however, I love every colour. 😊

I’m not a huge fan of W&N professional: they are nice paints, but I don’t like their “character”. However, their Turner’s yellow is well-loved in my custom palette.

Cotman isn't really the best, but the price varies a lot depending on where you live. The only reason I got the 12 half pan set was because it was only €10

I studied visual arts at uni, we had Cotman on our art supplies list. I really disliked this set, I found some colors chalky and others seems different when you looked at them dried. The color selection was also meh at best. This palette is the reason why I've never tried their professional range but nowadays I'd really like to check the cadmium free colors.

I just cannot get behind this brand. I’ve tried them over and over. For me they just aren’t pigmented enough and for some reason they are so expensive where they are easily accessible. Also, when I compare they color range and the light fastness options, other companies outshine them. Won’t touch them.

can we choose the colors if we buy? they have some pretty colors I don't have yet but I have the kinda standard set of colors you find in most basic sets already from different brands, so I would want to choose some fun new ones without the standard colors

If you use good paper you actually have quite a bit of time to pick up pigment if it doesn't work out. Also, remember to start with very light layers and build them up. I had heard that but it took me forever to realize i should not get a full painting in the first layer, and it might not look great the first layer, but once you put in that second layer or two, keeping some light in the form of white paper, there is nothing that compares to the beauty of watercolor. Also, don't forget to try painting first in plain water, then add your paint afterwards to the paper - again, it is magical , but truly requires different skills than opaque paints.

You'd be surprised how flexible watercolor is. While some pigments stain, many do not, and you can often use a brush or paper towel to dab up paint while it's still wet, or if dried you can rewet it and dab most of it up. You'll learn to clean up and modify mistakes so it looks like you did it on purpose lol

Then start with paints that you can lift easily, and a paper that allows for much correction. How about Van Gogh or Cotman, both of which lift reasonably easy, and Montval (it's a student grade paper that was specifically made to be very easy to correct your work on) ? Those aren't super fancy supplies, but they're of solid quality and you'll have no problem doing corrections. When you'll feel comfortably enough, you can always upgrade.

personally im not a big fan of WN, the watercolors always feel so gummy to me! yuck! i like mijello, daniel smith, and sennelier much better (oh and white knights). the gouache by WN isnt bad, but i think i prefer the consistency of holbein's gouache better. oh! but i wish more paint brands would pick up the cad-free pigment alternatives like WN is, props to them for that. buuuuuuuuut as always... seeing you paint makes me want to also.

I love the work you do Arleesha, thank you for this. However, I don't like it when reviews are sponsored by companies. It just seems like a dishonest way to advertise. I have always enjoyed hearing your and Denise Soden's opinion on Winsor and Newton. The things I discovered by myself having tried plenty of colours in plenty of brands, but that none of the watercolorists around me are saying (I assume because they grew up with W&N, and its harder to see the faults in your family). I did not grew up with them, so I found them extremely overpriced, hard to rewet (the "you're not supposed to pour your own pans!" is frankly insulting), and basically taking the place of better brands in stores where the space is limited. I don't think I could ever do better than you. You live off your art and that is lightyears ahead from where I'm at. If a super nice sales rep contacted me and gave me stuff, I would feel a great pressure to maximise the positive and brush off any potential negative aspects about their gift. I am not looking forward to the rest of the W&N series, but would like to be proven wrong. Thanks

You do know that W&N tube paint is formulated differently to their pan paint so that the pans are easier to rewet than dried tube paint, right?

It's been long discussed in KZfaq comments sections in various videos - that's only the manufacturers recommendation, in reality dried out tube paint rewets very easy and is very pigmented too.

Oh I hate w&n paints. Wait, they are giving me 10 free tubes of my choice, paper and brushes. Omg they are so fabulous. I love them. Hurry kids. Get a KZfaq channel so you too can get free supplies and make money off those free supplies. Then you can get a patreon. It's like they are paying the electric company to charge them more for they electric and they don't even care. It's Brilliant. You don't even have to teach anything. Just show what you have at home and say really great things about them. Even if you hate it. Be sure to add ad many ads as possible. That way you make more abd you can say that recording yourself is really hard work. Bloody brilliant.
