i worked at a B&B in a small town in england for 2 weeks. i ate beans on toast. every. single. day. i loved it !! i don’t know why people are so against it!! the bread was baked at home so the slices were much thicker than the grocery bread , so it didn’t get ‘soggy’. id put butter on my bread, baked beans, and a delicious sunny side up egg on top. always accompanied with 2 sausages and a side of mushrooms and tomatoes. ugh i wish i could have that now. admittedly the mushrooms and tomatoes was to just feel like i was being healthy 😅 had to force myself to eat those but the beans on toast w eggs and sausage was my favorite part of the morning before getting to work. not to mention the endless tea!!! miss england sm

First things first, let that bread go through that toaster again as it wasn’t nearly toasted enough. Secondly, add another slice as beans on toast is ALWAYS 2 slices of toast. Next thing is to add the cheese and then the beans (the hot beans make the cheese all melty). Finally, if you’re feeling adventurous, a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce 🤤 Edit: who would have thought my most liked comment on KZfaq would be about beans on toast 🤣

As a brit I can tell you that wasn't toast it was closer to just being stale from the heat not toasted. You want the moat dry crummy and textureful loaf like a seeded granary. I can't say anything about the rest that looked good but toast the toast next time stops it from becoming soggy so quickly

As someone from the UK, beans on toast is something i enjoy for some reason and it's pretty common here, although i don't eat it too much anymore. I've seen people add cheese and/or a fried egg on top if that interests you. Also i didn't know ketchup is controversial on beans on toast. But since beans here are always in a tomato base, it makes sense that its weird to pile on more tomato sauce. Glad to see your opinion on it though. It's not the best 'dish' but it's a comfort food for me, especially since its pretty cheap to make.

Mix some brown sauce (ketchup+a little tamarind and wine vinegar, you could also do barbecue sauce) and season your (Heinz) baked beans, and make sure they're piping hot. The best way to avoid getting soggy toast, is to slice your cheese rather than shredding it, and make an even layer of it above the toast, then put the beans on top of that.

In the uk this is very popular… I personally eat this every week. No ketchup (baked beans is already sweet sauce) and more toasted and more butter, and spoon the beans on the bread before each bite instead of dumping it on so it stays crunchy 😊

Brits do holiday in Bangkok so maybe it’s there for the tourists😅 think it’s so interesting how food seems strange from parts of the world but so normal for to others. when i make beans on toast i make cheesy spicy beans and keep them in a bowl to the side, toast the bread til deep brown and keep that on the side. then use a spoon to pour the beans on a bite sized part of the bread and bite. keeps the toast crunchy!

Brits don't eat ketchup with baked beans. H.P sauce is more likely to be used as this gives the beans a spicier flavour. Why would a Brit use ketchup when the beans already come in tomato sauce? Try actually toasting the bread if you want added crunch, then spread a thin layer of marmite before the beans, and cover with grated cheese.

Yeah you need to toast your bread for a lot longer... plus leave the toast to go cold a bit before buttering so you have a bit more crunch to your toast. Ketchup is fine I tend to add a bit to my beans along with butter while cooking. And also you need grated cheese...

The key is to have extra crispy toast and if its too bland, like I tend to feel, add Siracha and smoked paprika to the baked beans.. Also the extra ketchup.. not necessary.. and you actually want a proper grilled pork banger with it, the saltiness cuts through the sweetness of the baked beans.. I would have felt the same about it if I tried this version of it. my dad loves extra ketchup but I can't deal.. Hope you give my version a try, you might enjoy it more. Its a modest meal to make but when made well its actually pretty good..

Agreed, needs to be toasted more. Usually adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce on top and of course seasoning also helps. I usually put Cheese on before the Beans, maybe try that next time? ^^

Hey Lisa, So to get the crunch that you’re wanting what a lot of people do in England because it’s a very staple English dish don’t know why but it is, we actually put the toast around the beans and cut up the toast and then we add our toppings onto it then so it doesn’t have time to make it soggy and I’d recommend a fried egg and some gammon it’s amazing

To clarify we don't think this is haute cuisine here in the UK, it's something we love because it's cheap and easy and reminds us of being kids. Maybe comparible to Kraft mac n cheese in the USA?

ciabatta or french roll, your own beans how you like them, maybe toasted pine nuts, idk toast and beans can be so many things if you change the overall flavor profile of the beans/dish

This is commonplace in NZ where I'm from. You have to toast the bread VERY well and leave it to cool to get crunch.

my take on this. put hot beans and cheese into a bowl toast needs to be browner, let it go cold then butter it and put it on a plate put a spoonful of hot cheesy beans onto toast as you eat. then you get the crunch. But no ketchup!!

The toast shouldn't be soggy for beens on toast only the part the beans touch should be soft the backside should still be crisp (like when ya butter normal toast) properly toasted toast will also add that flavour to it.

If I understand it correctly, British Baked Beans are often ketchup flavored. More tomato in taste at the very least. This stands to reason that a legit baked beans on toast UK style will have a ketchupy taste.

As a Dutchie (who's never had this dish traditionally, I might add) I have to stress this enough: THE SAUSAGES ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE There are four things Northwestern Europeans take very seriously: 1. Bread 2. Meat 3. Beer 4. Cheese Our entire cuisine is built on these four staples. You cannot mix and match.

I was taught to toast the bread more, use cannellini beans and WORCESTERSHIRE sauce. That's my beans on toast. Delicious!

I usually keep the beans on the side and add them as I eat my toast, that way the toast is still nice and crunchy. I’ll also sometimes add eggs or cut up pieces of bacon, but never ketchup

when I was younger my dad would make white beans in tomatosauce and minced meat and I would always get toast with it as well. But I would take the toast on the side and put beans on a bite at the time so the toast wouldn't get soggy 🙈
