NOTE: Apparently the "Heave" Setting in SRS was turned down to 5 (very low) when I flew so that was why I didn't notice any effect on landing. From what I understand, with the Heave turned up, you very much feel the wheels touch the ground. I look forward to trying an H3 again someday in the future.

It's very interesting to hear other users' views on 3 DOF vs 6 DOF, another great video GYGO. I guess it's a very subjective experience, like VR, where people seem to either love it or hate it. Thanks to the DOF Reality modular but rugged "Meccano" design I've modded mine extensively over the past three years, like Gary. I started with the original worm and roller gearboxes and upgraded to the SFUs when DOF developed them, a really significant improvement. I even switched between the H3 and H6 𝙩𝙬𝙞𝙘𝙚, using their upgrade kit, before and after the SFU upgrade. To be honest, I never really noticed much increase in immersion with the 6 DOF, and I missed some of the ergonomics of the clever design principles of their H3. The payload is balanced on a Car type Universal Joint rather than being lifted physically by six motors, so it only needs two motors to tilt it, and one two slew it horizontally. It also has another advantage in that the seat area is much clearer of obstructions, whereas the six dof has the three "turrets" which limit seat movement backwards etc.. I've also dithered over Robert's planetary geared motor mod, having tried it with the H6 and the H3, and switching back to the original DOF direct drive motors several times now, as it's very easy to do that, as there's no alterations to the control software or even any need to re-calibrate. The H3 (and P3) design enables easy alteration of the effective gear ratio with the original DOF motors by simply moving the pushrods to the inner holes of the SFU lever arms. This reduces the maximum angular range of the pitch and roll, but also lets the motor spin faster for the same degree of movement, significantly reducing the 'cogging' effect (which only becomes a problem with slow angular movements in flight sims). I've just gone back to the planetary motors again though, because they 𝙩𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 eliminate cogging, and with a KP setting of 200 the reaction speed is fast enough for me with GA aircraft. That caveat "fast enough for me" is important to note though, because they wouldn't suit everyone, especially if they're more into car sims. The direct motors are virtually silent and really 'vigorous' if the SRS software is configured for maximum feedback. Being the wrong side of 70 though, (and pretty fat as well), the experience of nearly being flung out of the seat after crashing in Dirt Rally is why I prefer the planetary motors. They're just that little bit less violent for me, and yet synchronise accurately with angular motion in GA and Helis, even during rapid rolls back and forth that you'd never try in a real Cessna.... :

Thanks for the info. I also get the impression that the H3 has a bunch of benefits to it and the choice is not obvious even if money is no concern.

Thanks for the comment ShorebasePaul, your insight is always appreciated. I agree completely about being able to get in and out of the thing, the H2/H3 design is certainly the way to go for that. If it wasn't for the limited Heave that I felt, I'd say the H3 was just fine for most folks. Gary did tell me that the Heave setting was turned way down so I might have to go back and try it again with it set properly. I was stunned that I couldn't tell when my plane landed without the tactile feedback for heave (especially when your view is only of the sky in the Spitfire when you land). That is one of my favorite parts of the H6, feeling the ground/carrier deck when you are down. As for Robert's mod... it makes everything smooth but holy crap was it loud with 6 motors. I'm sure it is not a problem when you only run 2 on the H2/H3. From what I understand Igor has found a solution for the cogging and they hope to debut a prototype at the Flight Sim Expo, I'll be very interested to learn more about it when it comes out. As always, thanks for watching!

@@aapje For sure, it really comes down to if you want to maximize pitch/roll or if you want all the other axis too. As Shorebase said, the H2/H3 design wins hands down for ease of entry/exit and also for the footprint it takes up. Although the H6 isn't too bad for a 6 DOF rig compared to almost all the others out there. For me, I don't think I could give up my H6 now that I've felt the Heave/Surge effect. I like them too much. The best part is you could always start with an H2 and then upgrade whenever you want. That is one of my favorite parts of the DOF Reality Rigs. Thanks for the comment.

I'm surprised that you felt no effect on touchdown with the H3. It's true that a 3 DOF can't physically lift or drop, but my H3 definitely gives a strong jolt when the wheels touch, and is accuratly proportionate to how well I've flared. It varies between just noticeable to a real impact, by pitching the rig forward momentarilly. I'm still working on that updated video, should have it ready soon :

@@ShorebasePaul I was surprised too, but after I left, Gary let me know that he didn't realize the Heave was turned way down when I flew because he had be working on pitch and roll before I showed up. So I'm very hopeful that my next flight in an H3 will give me some feedback when I land.

you mentioned more throw on the stick. I have and extension on my thrustmaster that increases the throw significantly. I ordered two different extensions immediately after getting the hotas as I knew I would want more movement. I've been looking at getting some higher end sticks, but since I have hardly used what I have, I can't see spending the money until what I have breaks. But yes, I enjoy the finer tuned control I have on my setup.

Hey Mark, great video my man good to see you buddy you look like a kid in the candy store lol. anyway I wanted to see if you could keep me posted when the new motors come out because I am very interested in them. I want to make a decision on buying brand new H6 with the new motors or upgrading my H3. That means I would have to purchase the new motors for my current H3 and then complete it with the H6 upgrade kit and the new motors. Might be better just to purchase the new H6. Anyway if you could keep me posted I would appreciate it. Thanks buddy
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Ай бұрын
No problem... It looks like an upgrade kit might be available by the end of the year from the last I heard. I'm just excited that this is still a possibility as Igor wasn't sure in my last Livestream with him. If you are looking at the H6, I'd probably just recommend buying a new one once the motors come out. Otherwise you are going to have this Frankenstein setup with the retro-fit gearbox on 3 of your motors and then you would need 3 old motors to match so you can retro-fit those so everything is the same. I think a new H6 would just be a cleaner and simpler setup. I'd assume you could probably sell your H3 and recoup some of that cost and put it toward the H6. Anyway that is just my thoughts as it stands right now... I'm hoping to have another Livestream with Igor soon and if you can't make it, I'll ask him that question for you. Thanks as always for watching our stuff!

Heave may be nice, but is it twice the price nice? Anyway, I'm still waiting for GPUs and VR headsets to get where I want them, and I'll upgrade some flight sim & racing hardware as well, before seriously considering a motion rig. That also gives time for the motion rig hardware and software to improve.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 3 ай бұрын
Hey aapje, thanks for the question. For me Heave would be worth the extra price, but if you don't want to spend the money then just having motion in general is still worth it for the pitch and roll (which are the most important for flight). I think the 5090 is probably going to finally get us to the power we need in GPUs for awhile, and honestly I think the current/near term headsets (Quest 3 for value and upcoming Pimax Light for higher end) meet the expectations for most people when they think about what VR would be. Obviously things should continue to get better... but is it worth waiting for several more years when this awesome experience is available now? Just saying I'm glad I got into it when I did because that would be 3 year that I would have been missing out so far if I waited. Hope that makes sense? Thanks for watching.
@aapje
@aapje 3 ай бұрын
I'm not going to spend 2000 euro on a 450 Watt GPU, so I'm hoping for a decent video card for quite a bit less. And the Pimax Crystal Light is not yet out, and it will probably take them at least half a year to sort out the worst issues, knowing Pimax. As for getting things now, the plan is to gradually get better stuff, so I get a nice improvement to my gaming life several times.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 3 ай бұрын
@@aapje Yep totally get it, for me whatever it took to get my VR Headset to stop stuttering was my focus but I also know I'm weird when it comes to some of this stuff. I honestly doubt I'll upgrade to the 5090 either since the 4090 seems to be running all the sims just fine right now. I typically only upgrade when I see a need, and the Aero and the Crystal certainly showed they needed more than the 3080ti for me. As for the VR headset, honestly I don't really see the big advantage of the Light over the Quest 3 other than the display port. I personally get great performance wireless with the Quest 3 and very rarely notice any artifacting with it so that would be my recommendation for VR right now. Since neither have eye tracking I don't think the Light really is that great an alternative. As for motion, in your situation, certainly wait until the "Cogging" issue is resolved before you even think of getting a DOF rig... but I think that is coming soon. Anyway, I hear where you are coming from and respect your approach... just don't wait too long or you might get too old to enjoy being thrown around :) Thanks for the comment.

@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 3 ай бұрын
Hi gomini3708, thanks for the question. Pitch and Roll are the main ones for sure and you can get that in an H2. Think of the other axis as adding more realism to the experience so it depends how real (or say fun) you want it to be. The most important axis after pitch and roll in my opinion is Yaw IF you are doing Helicopters, if not it would be Heave, Surge, Yaw then Sway. That has always been my big complaint with the Yaw 2... no heave so that is why I haven't seriously looked into it. Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching.

You may need motion compensation so the Witmotion box will be something to keep in mind www.simracingstudio.com/post/motion-compensation but try it out first.
