After my stay on the Malaysian peninsula, I have finally moved on to Sarawak on the mesmerizing island of Borneo.
Malaysia has so many unknown exotic fruits and good food. As someone who has lived in Europe for the past 7 years, I was really surprised to see that variety.
Markets are great places to discover Sarawak, so I went to the Satok market in Kuching and Serien market for a food hunt!

The tropical weather in Malaysia one of the reason why our fruits taste delicious. Also the soils that rich with substances for trees to grow. Here in Borneo Island you can find the tallest tropical tree in the world located at Maliau Basin, Sabah (formerly known as North Borneo). Both Sabah & Sarawak have the most indigenous & ethnic groups in Malaysia. 28 indigenous group found in Sarawak, and about 43 ethnic groups found in Sabah. Malaysia in a Muslim country, but the majority of people living in East (Borneo) Malaysia are Christians. And every year both states celebrating their harvest festival. Kaamatan Harvest Festival is celebrated in Sabah on the 30th & 31st May, Gawai Harvest Festival celebrated in Sarawak on the 1st & 2nd June every year.

Hi welcome to my hometown. The pink flower is called ginger torch. The last greyish fruit is a cousin of the the stinky beans. They are called jengkol beans. Those cakes are called kek(cake) lapis(layered) our iconic Sarawak cakes. The round snack is called penyiaram..its made with flour, rice flour and palm sugar. You should try our famous kolo mee, Sarawak laksa, Kueh Chap to name a few. If you want to know more about Sarawak culture, you should visit our Sarawak Culture Museum which is the biggest museum in Malaysia and the 2nd biggest in South East Asia.

That big banana is called plantain or cooking banana. As the name implies, you cannot eat it raw. It tastes a bit tart. Usually we cut it into 1cm thick slices without peeling the skin and steam for 3 to 5 minutes. Another way of cooking is to pan fry this pisang tanduk slices on banana leaf.

The red turtle is a dessert known as “angku” with green bean paste. During a baby full- moon, if the parents gifted you with a red round angku, they have a boy. If a girl, then it is the same red turtle you were eating. That “looks so strange” is a vegetable. That “flower/fern” is midin or pucuk paku or fiddlehead fern. That “black snail’ is balitung. “Long gall” is curry leaves. The lemang (coconut glutinous rice) which uncle gave you to try is popular during Hari Raya Puasa. The bamboo shoots which the girl told you is for cooking chicken is also use for grilling lemang over an open fire. Both ketupat and lemang are eaten with rendang. That Mexican hat is piping hot. Glad you tried the various food at the market.

When eating tropical fruits, try to avoid touching their skins. Remove them if you can before feeding them into your mouth. Those skins have liquids that may burn your lips or mouth. I would not consider that as allergic though.
