I have to say Logic definitely has a lot to offer! Between Ableton and Logic, my preference is Ableton because I can work faster on it. But if I wasn't able to use Ableton ever again, I would probably be able to make all the same stuff on Logic, there would just be a bit of a learning curve.
Comment some of the cool Logic features that you think gives it an edge over other DAWs, I'm curious to know!
Thanks for watching and remember that I read all the comments and appreciate all feedback, questions, and thoughts!

Hey Ethan - I loved the authenticity of this video along with all of the others I've seen on your channel. I recently made the switch to Ableton from Logic after being a Logic head for 6 years. It's been around 6 months since I've switched over, so I can say a few things. I guess I'll start with the synths... ES M is insanely simple and super slept on (imo) mono synth that is great for sub basses and acid sounds. It''s extremely intuitive and relatively easy to get some nice sound out of. Since switching to ableton I have yet to find a synth that is that simple and robust to create those sounds. ES2 has some good sounds as well, and you can basically do anything with it, but I would often opt for different, easier to use synths such as ES P or Retrosynth. Retrosynth is great for beginners and you can make some relatively complex sounds (as far as subtractive synthesis can stretch lol). E FM is garbage, I've never been able to use it effectively, same with ES E. Alchemy has some really complex presets and lots of customizability, but the system for modulation is not as great as other 3rd party synths like Serum or even Surge XT. It also annihilates your cpu, so that's fun

I started with Ableton and really enjoyed it. A project I was involved with was in Logic and I made the switch. It became very un-fun to spend time working on music as I was battling both moving from a PC to a Mac and from Ableton to Logic. That project recently ended and popped Ableton open and spent several hours making music. It is closer to the way my brain works and will be the go-forward. Both great pieces of software as you said but one is just easier for me to get my head around.

Ive been using both for decades. They're both super easy to use. My favorite thing about ableton is that everything is drag and drop and the browser is the best in the business which makes it a great took to create a beat very quickly. logic is my go-to all-in-one DAW (recording, mixing, scoring, beatmaking). Pick what you like and what works for you There is no sound difference between any DAW. The workflow is what matters most for the end product. If youre frustrated or uninspired then the final product wont come out as good. If you're workflow is strong then youre product will "sound" better.

I really love this video, as it shows me what to expect when I do get logic. The reason for that being I am blind, and use a screenreader to navigate my devices. I have many blind friends who use logic and I’ve played around with it myself, and it is very screenreader friendly, and very easy to navigate. However i have not heard anyone say Ableton has the same accessibility as Logic, and i haven’t had a chance to test that. However seeing as I have gotten pretty used to Logic, I can say I love it, and can’t wait to get it on my own computer.

Fun video! I appreciate that this video had all the snark I would expect from a Logic vs Ableton video but is ultimately playful and recognizes that both are great tools and the main difference between them is how well you know one versus the other! Subscribed! I started in Logic and switched to Ableton. At this point, I don’t know that one is really better than the other, but I’m a big fan of Ableton Push and that’s the main thing keeping me on Ableton. (FWIW, Apple has a similar thing in the Logic Remote app for iPad…it’s sort of the “Push” for Logic. And it works well - but for me a touch screen just doesn’t compare to the physical controls on the Push).

Also, most people don't dive enough into it, when you know the shortcuts and tricks, it really improve the workflow 100%. MIDI editing is neat. And it keeps getting better with all the recent updates (Quick Sampler and Sampler, Live loops, Sample alchemy, Beat breaker, new Apple loops) which are all free. I just wish they had a system similar to Ableton's effect racks and that there were more possibilities of modulations (only MIDI track and no MSEG). With those it would the perfect DAW.

Kind going through the same thing right now. I first recording gig was back in the analog days, then about 2005 decided to checkout DAW world with Logic. Not long after I got into Logic I got a job in a ProTools shop and Logic was no more. Then I got our of recording again and now retired and decided to get back into recording for my own pleasure and decided to try something new and went with Ableton Live. So after about four months with Ableton I decided to start doing Logic Pro because I find something learning two similar things makes it easier. I'm like you Ableton is far more intuitive and the online help far better. I like to work a lot in the Piano Roll to edit drums time and feel and Ableton way easier. So for now I will keep getting up to speed on Logic as I go deeper into Ableton Live.

Heyyy I actually did the opposite recently! Bought ableton after using logic for 10 years. I’ve used ableton before here and there but always felt like a bushman when I did (like how you may have felt when using logic) and that was mostly cause the shortkeys are different, and also behaviours are different… (like even play behaviour what..) But totally agree both are so powerful. I’m learning ableton mostly just for the switch of inspo. Would be interesting to see you do a video of tips and tricks for people switching to ableton!

That was interesting. I've tried many times to get into Ableton, but i find it completely unintuitive. But, i started a long time ago, when all sequencers had a more traditional 'tape'/linear layout. Mark of the Unicorn was my first sequencer/DAW. I moved to Logic afterward. Tried Reason, went back to Logic. Now, because so many 'dance' producers use Ableton, i keep trying to like it, but it never makes sense. The one thing i do like is having a full chain of effects visually represented at once, but then that's countered by that UI not looking like those individual plugins as they were designed. Ableton shows you a lot of stuff at once, but it's also showing you stuff you're not using. Re: colors and keyboard shortcuts, i'm pretty sure you can tailor Logic in similar ways. Learning shortcuts is the same for every DAW-either memorize the new thing or change the commands to match what you think they should be.
@CompleteProducer

@@CompleteProducer Thanks. Will do. The only thing stopping me now is the clumsiness in trying to get an external/hardware synth to work via USB audio, and thinking i need to have both an Aggregate Device track *and* another type of track enabled. I'm sure that's wrong, but it's the only way i get sound out of it.... Oh, well. More research to do.

Ableton is an instrument in and of itself. Would be cool if Ableton came as a vst one day to use in a traditional daw. I find the only thing I am missing out of protools are all the cutting and dropping tools. Ableton is centered around the sequencer not necessarily the editor

There are aspects of Ableton that are more intuitive for sure (time stretching and MIDI controller assignment , for example), but it’s hard to deny that the overall look and feel of Logic is more inviting to most people than Ableton’s spreadsheet-like UI. If you are buying the latest version of Logic then you won't be able to use the older more reliable macbooks from 2012 and 2015, both my personal faves. You'll need a newer mac with a newer OS. However, with ableton, you can use it with an older Mac OS so if you have a 2015 macbook then you are good to go with Ableton. I'm on an old pirate copy of logic from a few years ago that I cannot update. I want a new fresh copy of logic but it will require me dropping at least 1300 bucks for a used 16 inch M1 chip Macbook so I can get the newer OS. I am trying to decide if I wanna buy Ableton standard while it's on sale and see how it runs on my 2015 macbook pro with 16gb RAM or do I buy an M1 chIp macbook and get logic. The most expensive option would be M1 macbook plus ableton

@11:30 wow that's surprising. I actually never liked the visual aspect of Ableton. I was forced over, transitioning from Cubase, cause i needed a real live-performance environment. But: i find Ableton soooo incredibly ugly. Truly shows that it s just a matter of taste. But when it comes to in detail midi editing and a better handling of multi monitors, Cubase is much better. Visually, compared to Ableton, I like Bitwig much more. Seeing the content of clips!!! Waveforms, Midi notes! Awesome! Even the play-progress is visible in the clip view, while in Ableton it's only far below the clip. Buuut: Bitwig lacks a few Ableton things i would miss so i cant change yet. It's quite a journey with all the DAWs and VSTs, haha.

I don't know why this wasn't showing up in the context menus, but Command T is the command to split a track. That's why it doesn't make a new track. To me, an idiot, Command N is what I'd expect for a new track, but that makes a new project, so it's Option Command N, which is pretty logical I would say. Command T in Final Cut Pro is the trim tool, that splits a video clip, so it's the exact same command in logic to trim the track, or split it rather. Just different commands for different workflows.

Also another thing. I know tempo warping and what not is a big thing in Ableton, but Logic has a very big trick up its sleeve. If you click on "keep" right under the tempo at the top, then open the preferences for the project tempo, you can set imported tracks to be analyzed and synced automagically. Logic will read the audio and find the downbeats and match the tempo as best as it can. Sometimes you have to open the editor and give it hints where downbeats are, but usually you do this once or twice and apply it and Logic will figure out the entire track tempo and you have to do nothing else to it. It's insanely powerful. Logic can also do the inverse and retain the imported file tempo and instead change the project tempo to match it instead.

I am fluent in Sonar, Abbleton, protools, steinberg, fruity loops, and logic. Logic is absolutey the last DAW I would use. You can't quick master in Logic; the tools aren't there and the layout of requires way too much mousing movement. If you're a pro use: abbleton, studio one, steinberg, protools, or even cakewalk for mastering Audio tracks. Fruity Loops, Garage Band, Logic, are for making midi tracks. This video is absolutely correct. I am only here because I was trying to master someone's Logic track and I ended up mastering it, but I told him that I will never do it again.

10:40 - dude, please be honest. To say Ableton is "150 bucks more" is kind of disingenuous. A fair comparison would be the price of Suite, given the sheer amount of quality stuff Logic comes with (sounds & FX). So the difference is a LOT more than 150 quid, plus Ableton has paid upgrades way more regularly than LPX. The list of things (from 10:18) that Live supposedly does better is a bit biased as well (or simply uninformed). Tbf though, the browser in Live really is way better (cmd+f and type the first few letters -> boom!); selecting plugins in LPX otoh gets really tedious. The quick selection remembers only the last 5 plugins used; so lots of menu diving to get the right plug. Live is also the best when it comes to giving info at a glance on small laptop screens. Not hating, tbh I'd be using Live if their pricing wasn't as predatory - due to the unified browser and better UI on small screens. It's super efficient. Coming from Logic, and not owning a gazillion third party VSTs, Live Standard would be a massive (!) downgrade in everything except workflow. Logic is easily the best bang for the buck only 2nd to FL.

Are you suggesting ableton because you sell ableton training?
@CompleteProducer
@CompleteProducer 7 ай бұрын
I've been trying to get Ableton to sponsor a video or give me some kind of discount I can offer to students, but I've had no luck so far. I suggest Ableton because I love using it, and it's the easiest DAW for me to bring my ideas to life. It's also the DAW I'm most proficient with and the most qualified to teach on.

This is goofy but, the thing i cant stand about Ableton, is that all the track parameters are on the right side of the screen. EVERY other DAW they are on the left, and its so uncomfortable for me. I want to love Ableton but.......ugh i hate that.

I am a beginner. And I started with ableton 3 years ago. I had to watch a few tutorials and it wasn’t hard to understand. But once you get deeper into electronic music theory, it is pretty much like math or coding. You have to Google stuff and you will learn completely new ways of making music. Garage band and logic is great for kids.
