Oil pastels definitely have a huge learning curve when it comes to not making your work look like a muddy mess. After a bit of trial and error, you can get some amazing pieces due to how well they blend together and even make some interesting textures by scraping away at them. Hope you give them another try sometime after this traumatic experience 😅

Completely agree! He needs to take the lessons learned in that short experiment and try again. Less ancient pastels may make a difference as well. I know they never "dry", but they do become brittle and less blendy over time.

For pastels my go to technique is usually using a black piece of paper, actually! Then do the sketch lightly with a white pastel. Build up the colors/layer from lightest to darkest.

@bugk1d
@bugk1d 2 жыл бұрын
hi! i have almost no experience using oil pastels, but from what i know, try choosing a smoother paper to work on. you have to really layer and mix them to have a consistent final piece, so the texture in watercolour paper isn’t the best. the colours are really blendable(?) so the outlines can be worked out without a defined lineart, unlike brush pens or nankin. also, im sure you already know this but try watching artists that use oil pastels! all love to you, i love your content :>>
@shannonlynn220
@shannonlynn220 2 жыл бұрын
Try a smoother paper and do exactly what you do in your usual style with the black oil pastel and then add color after just like normally the black lines will blend smooth and solid once you put the color next to them unlike the pencil and push harder for opacity and easier blending. And follow the shapes that you want with your strokes like painting. I think you would be very good at this in your style because you're so strong in depth using color like the little highlights and hair's you could scratch in at the end. You got it boss! 😊🖍

I prefer using oil sheets for oil pastels, much smoother application, and you can layer much more easily. Go dark to light like you would for oil colors and putting less pressure as you move forward with the layering helps. I hope this would be useful.

a tip i learned from my art teacher with oil pastels, go over the details loosely first, dont be focused on filling in the space for the first pass. the base colour, then the darks and lights. once you've done that loose first pass, you can start going over it more precisely! go over with the base colour again, but press down harder and fill in the gaps, then the shading, highlights, and details. also, be sure to erase the sketch enough that you can still see it but wont smudge it :P oh also, better not to use your fingers to blend, let the pastels layer themselves into a blend

Personally, I have the most fun using oil pastels for abstract ideas. Trying to execute precision based art projects with pastels can’t help but be messy. It’s the same for soft pastels too. The workflow is intuitive for certain types of projects, but you have less control which affects neatness. I definitely prefer other mediums, especially for portraits or landscapes with intricate details.

personally I recommend sennelier oil pastels, not for the boogie ass reason of using expensive art supplies but because u can rlly begin to feel the true nature of oil pastels. they r creamy and pasty, colors blend seamlessly with each other and you can use oil paint mediums with your oil pastels too, since they are technically a type of oil paint. u can use them on other surfaces such as gessoboard, or wood or even cold watercolor paper (for those who love water-based mediums). it's rlly a great medium, the cheaper brands just don't do the medium any justice.

Uuufff I m really disappointed that it didn’t work out with you. It’s really easy to use thm. I have been using oil pastels from long time, I really love painting with it. Smooth n easy to blend.

The oil pastel itself looked good. It's just that the proportion was off in the oil pastel one whereas the proportion in your watercolor paint one was fine. It's probably because you're more comfortable with watercolors but honestly your video just made me want to try oil pastels for professional drawings now. I rarely ever used oil pastels also, like you. Love the channel. Your work is perfect
