I think perhaps $40 and above is luxury. Most of luxury I think I’m paying for the name. I’ve had Louboutin lipsticks- I felt I was paying for the excitement of the packaging, but also paying for the name. Those lipsticks were good but the formula didn’t excite me beyond belief.

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on price. I feel like there are certain brands that deliver on formula, but after a certain price point, I feel like I'm paying for packaging or the brand's name. I don't think I'd want to get a Louboutin lipstick after seeing reviews. Excellent packaging, but just a "good" lipstick. For that price, I'm going to need to have an excellent formula along with exquisite packaging.

I am SO loving this series, can’t wait until you really start digging into the ratings and reviews and comparisons, I totally trust your judgment and recommendations. And your descriptions are so thoughtful, on point and helpful. I absolutely LOVE the Tom Ford Indian Rose that I bought after you featured it. It may be my favorite lipstick ever. And even though I experimented and found a super close Revlon dupe, there is definitely a difference in formula and pigment and packaging, and the TF is worth it to me for the joy I get each time I use it and see it on me. So thank you!

I feel like a luxury lipstick is all about the experience. It's all of the beautiful things coming together making you feel fantastic every time you put it on. It's not just a good formula, or beautiful packaging. It's all of that and a whole lot more. I know it's an expensive lipstick, but I feel the same way when I reach for my tube of Indian Rose. 💸🤭

Love lipsticks! For the most part it's the only make-up I wear so I am willing to splurge. Luxury lipstick for me is a combination of the right shade, consistency and packaging. The latter is the tie-breaker. Even if the shade and consistency are right, it's a no go if the packaging looks cheap. It has to be something that I am willing to whip out and re-apply in front of other people. That's why for me I don't consider Tom Ford, Dior or even Chanel luxury because of the ordinary packaging. (Special mention to the $195 Chanel Lipstick which looks like a L'oreal). It breaks my heart that Valentino's Red 22R is such a perfect shade but has plasticky packaging. So my holy grail is the Hermes lipstick. I also have Rouge Piment (almost finished now) and 5 other shades. Not only is the packaging gorgeous and refillable, Hermes offers a variety of shades and textures. I also love their seasonal limited ones with different cases. But you just really need one case and the refills are so easy to put in and pull out. Second place is the Byredo lipstick. The case is more stunning than Hermes but it's not refillable though. I now have 3 (Tokio Rose, Red Armchair & Semi-formal) and I think you should try other shades. The Le Bouche Rouge has nice shades but they do not look like $100+ lipsticks to me. While the case may be made of leather, it's not visually striking and looks quite ordinary. As for the high price of Hermes and Byredo, I rationalize it all to cost per wear. I wear them all the time and makes me feel pretty even if I am just bringing out the trash or emptying my mailbox LOL. I have so many lipsticks that I never use and that's what I call a waste of money. You do need to try out so many before you find your forever one (like kissing frogs before you find your Prince). Thank you for all you do for us lipstick aficionadas!
@thelipstickgal
@thelipstickgal 5 ай бұрын
I've kissed so many "frog prince" lipsticks. (including the Lipstick Queen shade in Frog Prince) I'm a pretty picky customer. I want the formula to be really good, and I want nuanced shades. I don't want anything that dries my lips out and makes them look older or crusty. I do love a beautiful package, but I'm more about what's inside the case. I'm thinking of price when it comes to luxury lipsticks. So for me, $59 for a TF lipstick or $55 for a Chanel lipstick is certainly in the luxury price point. As to whether the packaging is luxe, that's a whole different conversation. I'm going to have to spend this next week trying these beauties out and making notes. I will say I was expecting to be more impressed with the LBR lipsticks. Especially at that price. The packaging feels very quiet luxury, but I'm not sure how the leather case will hold up in the long run. Eventually all my lipsticks have to survive being forgotten at the bottom of my handbag, and some fare better than others. I'm worried about the leather case. I'm with you when it comes to "everyday luxuries." I think that using a beautiful lipstick, or wearing your favorite shoes just to take out the trash makes everything better! I used to save my expensive lipsticks for special occasions, but now I wear them just to do dishes or pick up the kids from school. I do it for me, and the way it makes me feel fabulous when I'm putting it on!

I’m in my bougie lipstick phase too. It’s part of why I’m so glad you are trying all of these and letting us know which ones are truly worth the money!! I had that exact Byredo shade and the cream Hermes formula in general on my list to try “in the future”. Both…off the list now!! If you’re not blown away, I’m not paying $50+. The way I see it, you’ve saved me $125 with today’s video! (Oh and I don’t need accessories for my lipsticks. I’d much rather have a heavy beautiful, reusable cap!) Also…LOVE your earring pairing today!! ❤

Yes, I'm wanting my socks to be blown off. Especially at these prices. I'm waiting to see how I feel about the Hermes lipstick after wearing it for a full day. I ended up test driving the LBR lipsticks yesterday. I'll have to put Hermes through it's paces this weekend. I'm so sad about the Byredo lipstick. I LOVE the component, but the metallic finish just kills it for me. I'll use it for review purposes, but I think I'll be hard pressed to reach for it on the regular. The keyring is from Studio Cult, and the other one is a simple paperclip 14K hoop that I've had for a while. I make charms to dangle on them, and switch them out regularly. I loved the idea of a mismatched "set."

I think luxury/high end lipsticks start for me around $35-40…certainly by $50. I’m really looking forward to the big ranking videos!! I think it depends when it comes to luxury products. It just depends on what features are important to you for certain things. For me, it varies. I will buy a luxury lipstick, but I only need a clothes washer to do basic things so paying for 15 cycles and extra features isn’t worth it for me…but I can see how for some people they would be. I also don’t crave luxury cars, but I understand why people love them. But…I’m sticking with my expensive Oribe hair products because I love how they smell and work for me. I’ll also shell out for a well made expensive pair of comfortable shoes because I will wear them for 20 years and I hate when my feet hurt.
@thelipstickgal
@thelipstickgal 5 ай бұрын
I'll pay for quality shoes, but not luxury. I want a comfortable, well made shoe that will last a long time. If I can get a leather shoe with a leather sole, I'm so happy. It's worth the $200+ for me. The minute people start paying for Louboutins, I can't connect. I think there's a thresh hold. Up to a certain price, it's worth it, but after a certain point, it's just spending for the brand name or having people know you're able to afford expensive things. I'm more likely to buy luxury beauty, and high end accessories. I'm not an expensive car person. I drove the same used VW passat for 17 years until it couldn't be repaired anymore. Then I waited for 6 months to buy another used car. I feel like I'm sitting in the lap of luxury because this car has a keyless entry and ignition, not to mention a back up camera. LOL! All our cars are old. Even our newest car is old!

The CH lipstick was such a surprise. I like the feel of it, the shade, but not the packaging. I wish it delivered a bit more for the $55 price. I'm going to have to wear each of the rest of these shades over the next week and make some notes. I'm swimming in luxury lipstick, and I'm not mad. I can't think of the cost or I go a little crazy, but I'm enjoying myself.

@@thelipstickgalI am so the same now. 😂Yesterday I got 4 more of the hour glass phantom lip balms at $36 a pop, and I know could have done worse - and have. 😂 I have been on a hunt, and actually think that I like the hourglass better than the YSL Candy Glaze. I do think both formulas are what I need and what I’m looking for at the moment though. I am actually shocked at the pigment and how thick and plush the hourglass are. I never told you, but when they released I got one of the Chanel $200 lipsticks in that crystal packaging. I still feel bad about that, because NO FORMULA is worth $200. 😂😂😂😂😂

I'm trying to figure out what I like, and what I'll recommend. I might have to take a look at the new shades of the Hourglass Glossy Balms. Girl, that key in your earring needs to lock my wallet up. I will enjoy vicariously. You know what? I am older than you by about 17 years, and when I turned 50, I said to myself, “You have earned Chanel.” I bought Chanel. I bought NARS. These were the bougie brands of my era. And then I fell in love with Clarins. They had the most gorgeous stuff. You know that quiz question, if you could only buy from one brand? It would have been Clarins. They made my favorite foundation, they had a buttery powder foundation I took in my purse, the lip colors were divine, the mascara was terrific, the blushes were gorgeous, and the concealer was magical. The lipsticks were so beautiful. The shades were perfection. The prettiest coral I ever owned.

I know it's going to be rare that everyone who watches will purchase one of these crazy expensive lipsticks. It's taken me decades to give myself permission to but Givenchy, Guerlain, Hermes and so many of these "luxury" brands. I don't normally spend more than $40 on a lipstick. Even that price is painful for me. I'm so much more comfortable in the high $20s to low $30s. There are so many of these formulas that I've never tried before. I haven't tried much from clarins. Just some skincare and the lip oil that I'm head over heels for. It's not a brand I think if much, but maybe that needs to change. Thanks so much for watching today! I primarily used tinted lip balm to give my lips color and hydration until I got into my 50s. I would sometimes switch up my look by wearing Buxom lip gloss and (rarely) I would break out one of my two lipsticks. Not sure why but I started wearing lipstick more frequently and searching for a favorite formula. By the time 2020 put lips out of fashion so to speak I had a nice little collection of Nars, Urban Decay and Bite lipstick. I keep trying different lip products hoping to find the magic combination of long lasting, hydrating and nicely pigmented ... oh and 'doesn't settle into the fine lines' I have acquired in the last couple of years. I have a fun collection going and many products I have discovered through beauty KZfaqrs. Turns out I still appreciate tinted gloss / balm (YSL candy glosses and recently picked up Clinique Black Honey). I enjoy lip oils (Clarins is my favorite with NYX next; still want to try Dior), I have found Maybelline's Vinyl Ink has the lasting power that helps me get through days I don't have time to reapply. I really appreciate your channel and your passion for lipstick (little confession - the first couple of times I watched I thought you said 'lipstick elf' instead of 'lipstick gal'). I have been looking forward to this series since you mentioned you were working on it. I agree with you on the luxury price point starting at $35. Hoping to discover some new options I haven't yet tried. I am interested in which lip pencils you recommend for these since I am still trying to find favorites.

I love a tinted glossy lip balm so much. The older I get, the more I lips to stay hydrated. I find that my lips are changing so dramatically over the past 3 years. Less volume overall and I can't wear certain matte formulas like I used to be able to. My lips have gotten more finicky. I'm always looking for the perfect lipsticks. I want a beautiful lipstick that hydrates, doesn't settle into lines, makes my lips look better while not being high maintenance. I feel like we're looking for the same thing. My foray into luxury lipsticks has been eye opening. I'm not sure some of these prices are merited based on performance so far. I'd love to be a lipstick elf! That makes me smile. If I could magically make lipsticks in a tree like a Keebler elf, I'd be so pleased with myself. Thanks so much for making the time to watch and comment. I love hearing what you enjoy.

You pose some interesting questions re: luxury. Generally, I don't shop for luxury, per se, I shop for quality. Higher end lipsticks sometimes have a more interesting color range and formula, but not always. I have wonderful lipsticks from L'Oreal and also from Guerlain. Generally my "cutoff" for higher end lipsticks is around $50 --- anything more than that and you reach the point of diminishing returns. I am not into buying fancy cases, etc. that just add to the price.

I normally keep the price to under $50 for a lipstick. I'm even happier at under $40. Giving myself permission to get these luxury lipsticks has been eye opening. When I used to work the morning show (6am) during my radio days, I would go to work without makeup on. There was always time between songs, writing the news cast, answering the phone and running a giveaway to put on some light makeup before the rest of the office arrived at 8. I feel like there's just a serious upgrade in packaging after a certain price point. There are some formulas that feel better on the lips, but not always. I'm usually happiest at the high end price point. It has some of the nicer touches that drugstore packaging lacks, and the formulas are usually solid. I'm struggling with the price for so many of these lipsticks. It's causing me anxiety. Especially with the huge number of newer lipsticks I've acquired over the past several months. I can't let myself dwell on how much I've spent on luxury lipsticks for too long or I go a little nuts.

@thelipstickgal
@thelipstickgal 5 ай бұрын
Formula wise, I'd recommend the Milani Fetish Matte lipsticks. They're a drugstore staple, and have a range of shades. I don't know if they have a brick shade but the formula is fantastic. I think that Revlon's Super Lustrous formula would be another good place to look. They recently extended or revamped the shade range, so they might have what you're looking for, and it's another great drugstore formula. If you're looking for something a little more luxurious, I like the shade Cabo from Merit. ($26) It's more of an orangey red, and not a straight up brick, and the Merit lip oil in Cara Cara is a nice warm rusty tone. You might like the shade Tiger from Merit, but I don't have that one. I love the formula, but that's not a shade I currently have in my collection. Lisa Eldridge ($36) has some wonderful warm red shades. Velvet Dragon, & Velvet Cinnabar. If you're looking for a darker, deeper red, I like Velvet Jazz. It has more of a berry undertone on me, but it's a lovely different shade of red. I have a Gucci Care and Glow lipstick ($47) in the shade Devotion, and it's a lovely hydrating lipstick that is a warm brick shade. I know you said "not luxurious" but these are the ones I have in my collection that qualify. I hope that's helpful. Thanks so much for watching today.

Well, drugstore lippies are what... $5 or $6 up to like $12 or so? I had a few. After buying a bunch of "dupes" from Elf, Maybelline, Revlon, Loreal, Flower...etc. - Here's what I hate. I dislike the smell of many of them. Some have fragrances, I don't like that some smell like crayons, wax, or kinda petroleumy. Maybe I'm over sensitive. I also think the feel of the formulas are beeswax-y or even greasy. And I think most inexpensive components feel plastic and ugly. I think $35 is in the luxury category. I am trying to imagine what my grandmother would have thought about spending even $20 on a lipstick 🤣... but I have friends who would never spend more than $20 on any makeup. I like lipstick with no smell. I like it to either feel light enough that I need to check the mirror every now and again to make sure it's there, or moisturizing, like I want more because it feels so good on my lips. I hate lipstick that feels drying to the lips. Those go in the trash. The minute they smell weird, trash. I had to throw away my last Becca lipstick the other day. Broke my heart, because that COLOR. 🥰 I can live with a lighter weight component, as long as it doesn't come apart. I often keep my favorites in my purse, and a loose lid is aggravation I don't need. I would really like it if the Lisa Eldridge component had a way to tell between the colors like a colored piece on the end or even a different finish on the different formulas.

My first several lipsticks were from Clinique, Lancome and Estee Lauder in the late 80s. That's when all the packaging was metal. Going from department store lipsticks to drugstore lipsticks was hard for me. It's usually the packaging and the lack of nuanced shades that really bother me. If the formula is good, I'm willing to over look a lot of things. One thing I can't abide is a packaging issue where the lid stops staying on due to wear and tear. If that ever happens, it's game over. I can't take a lipstick like that around with me in my purse or pocket. I'm just asking for trouble. I've had too many handbags ruined by a lipstick where the cap came off. Never again! I feel like drugstore lipsticks are the worst when it comes to inexpensive/cheap packaging that fails before the lipstick is finished. I know there are so many people who would never spend luxury prices on a single lipstick. I totally understand that. The thought of expensive makeup makes those people nuts. I have a friend who never understands my large lipstick collection, much less how much many of them cost. She's not a makeup junkie, but her board game collection and her tech is always the best there is. She's always looking for the latest and the greatest. We all have different things we're willing to spend money on. For me, it's lipstick. I keep a lot of lipsticks I don't care for so I can talk about them here on my channel. I would love to get rid of all the ones I just don't like, but I'm always saving them in case they'll serve a greater purpose in the future.

Well, you can’t say that these luxury brands don’t know how to make a good component ha. I guess since I love a bullet lipstick, but grab for it lot less these days the actual fancy part doesn’t really apply to me as much. When I was wearing them more working in office, I would wear lipstick and then after lunch I would mostly apply some kind of gloss, so Id never really carry the lipstick with me then either. For the $ I’d want a weighted magnetic cap instead and I’m honestly surprised that TF hasn’t made that switch already seeing as Dior just did. The Carolina packaging is so pretty, but it kind of reminds me of when CT switched to the refillable caps, although those were really chintzy and scratched easily.
@thelipstickgal
@thelipstickgal 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, I don't mind it as much from CT because the price is still under $40 for the refillable ones. These from Carolina Hererra are $55. PMG and Lisa Eldridge have better packaging in the $30+ price range. I always take my daily lipstick with me even if I switch to a balm or gloss half way through the day. By the end of the week, I have so many lipsticks swimming around at the bottom of my purse.

Thanks so much for these videos! As a fellow lipstick obsessive, theyre compulsive viewing. Listening to your comments in this one though and what you want from a high end product that’s charging those prices… you are going to hate me for this but…have you tried any Dries van Noten lipsticks? They’re really pricey though less than Le Bouche Rouge, but they offer patterned heavy ceramic refillable cases (you can choose from a few options) and three formulas with lots of original colours, pointy tips and great reds. You didn’t need to hear new recs at this stage did you? 😂 I also bought a metallic Byredo but I didn’t even realise until you pointed it out here 🫣Mine is much lighter … a cool mauve called Le Vieux Rose which is gorgeous, and somehow, the metallic thing is so subtle on that it passed me by, but I’m guessing now it’s all I’m going to be able to see when I put it on… Byredo do have the most gorgeous matte rich red btw called Mad Red which is not metallic and would look stunning on you….
