I like to go to the grocery store late at night and get the manager markdown steaks. I usually pick a sirloin or chuck eye for about $3-4 per steak. It’s at least 4x the amount of meat per steak too, so it’s essentially the same price. They’ve also never made me sick. So yay cheap steaks from the grocery store!

The window said “precooked” ,it was raw. The difference in color was pretty significant, probably smelled different too.

Meat is just something you shouldn't cheap out on in general. Cheap meat is generally bad quality to begin with but if you are unlucky it also comes with poor quality control and lax hygiene. Then there's the fact that, just like in this video, you often don't actually get a good price because the amount of meat you are sold is minimal and they often bloat the weight by just adding absurd amounts of brine, so that you do pay relatively too much for meat that's not even good. Chances are, the animal also didn't get to live a very good life which negatively affects the taste and consistency of the meat. There's lots of cheap food that is still good but if you want meat you really shouldn't be cutting corners.

The disturbing thing about this is that stores always need to make some return for each product they sell. If I'm going to be optimistic, let's say they make 10 cents per steak pack out of the dollar paid for. Factoring in the price of the meat itself, the processing and packing process, the transportation, refrigeration, and assorted labor costs: you have to wonder how much corner cutting you need to do to be able to sell beef at less than a dollar.
