I was helping a friend with a bathroom vanity build, and for the top they picked this section of Acacia wood countertop from the local big box home centre store.
I had never worked with Acacia before; it certainly is not a North American domestic. So I thought I'd make a short video showing it off.
THIS IS NOT a definitive academic guide to Acacia Wood! I'm just sharing some introductory stuff I found out as a woodworker.

In the Southern Europe Acacia it's mostly used for firewood, but it's best used for fence posts because of its resistace to rot without any protection. Acacia blooms white flowers in mid-spring, the flowers are edible and bees love it which in turn means a lot of honey.

Acacia wood trees are in the Arizona desert too. Acacia wood is mentioned a lot in the Bible, used for the Ark of the covenant and other builds.

Acacia is a nice wood, at least some of the many varieties.. Koa wood is Acacia, Australian Blackwood is both used extensively in Guitar making, in general nice to work with, the hardness rating seems a bit hard to me but what do I know...

When using Acacia slabs for kitchen counter tops Rubio Monocoat is a great finishing product and very user friendly .

nice work and informative video, i'm sure the vanity will look great. a suggestion, tho: having worked with a lot of water based poly, i'd never use it in a bathroom or kitchen. it just doesn't respond well to having any water left behind. an oil poly would have been a better choice. an even better choice (and what i use in bathrooms) is waterlox. poly is a bear to repair as you have to sand off all the old finish, but you can reapply waterlox with no sanding. i've used waterlox on my wood kitchen counters; i applied the original finish over 7 years ago and it's just now showing signs of needing some attention.

Very nice! We bought three 8'x2' lengths of Acacia countertops from Lumber Liquidators for our kitchen remodel. I finished them with Rubio Monocoat Pure because of the easy maintenance on them. The Rubio has a good amount of protection, but my Lab puppy has already scratched the edges on them from putting his paws on them trying to get stuff on the counter. I have some offcuts I was thinking of making into cutting boards but this has me worried about the durability of them. It may be worth making them into end grain boards instead.

Acacia is in no way “between hickory and black locust”. It’s barely above poplar. The only time I work with this stuff is when a customer has pre bought it and I need to finish it. I have no idea why they use this for butcher block tops other than the look of the mixture in color tones.

I love acacia wood. It comes in other names, like robinia and i think locust is also related.

Robinia is black locust and it is not related to acacia although the trees do share some visual similarities

there's small leaf acacia, which is acacia confusa, and this stuff is pretty hard (2300 Janka), then there is golden wattle which is 1800 Janka, and then there is big leaf which is 1300-1700 Janka. They look similar but confusa has a lot of color variation as does golden wattle. This appears to be golden wattle.

Very informative; thank you. I was just looking at a sheet of 48” x 16” for a narrow desk but at 0.71” thickness I doubt it would be strong enough to put any equipment on it.

We bought a home with Acacia flooring that looks like the one on your video but it's the dark shade like the look after you stained it. I really like lighter color flooring. Do you think we can lighten the color of our wood floor if we sand it down?

Thinking of using this for a butcher block top for a desk. Sounds like it maybe too soft. Any suggestion on a good sturdy wood for a desk?

Oak, cherry, walnut, maple, beech…. And yes, I think acacia is probably too soft to be ideal

Nice video. I see that Lowe's carries acacia countertops. It seems that "acacia" is used as a color or pattern on flooring. I had to check if the mimosa trees in the southeast USA are the same as acacia. They are not, but both names are applied loosely to a variety of plants.

Yeah I totally skipped over the fact that it is also appearing as flooring. I did a bit more reading later on and looks like this is a good program for those farmers in Vietnam to grow trees.

Well we had a Lowe’s here and they had some high points other than the fact that they built their multi million dollar building 9 feet from HOME DEPOT’s multi million dollar building my only dislike with them in the two years they were here because every time you went in the store though all the employees were having a team meeting big circle and you could walk right through the middle of that circle and none of them would say can I help you I don’t know what the hell they’re meeting about but I don’t think it was customer service!

Not sure how rare it is but my boss bought some property that had a big acasia on it here in western Washington she had it cut and milled into slabs she has slowly sold over the years luckily she don't advertise that she has some for sale cuz I'm eventually gonna get her to give me.a.slab I want to make an guitar with it.lol

I have learned that it's really difficult to find a lot of Acacia butcher block stuff on the web. My intension is to build a desk top on a sit/stand adjustable frame. I really don't like the contrast as much as I thought, and I want to end up staining with like a Jacobean or an ebony/dark walnut mix. Maybe espresso? A dark, chocolate looking color with lessened contrast. Do you have any experience staining these?

I have not, sorry. On mine, the one side was more consistent with mostly dark pieces then the other. Hopefully you have a "better" side to put on top?

I'm pretty sure your wood is not "Acacia". It's probably "Robinia pseudoacacia" - known as "Black locust" in America. The heart wood of Robinia pseudoacacia is very rot resistant an is - in Europe - often used for outdoor children playground structures for example. The sap wood (white/yellow color) is not rot resistant and less dense. As your board is full of sap wood it is of a lower quality. One very impressive quality of Robinia pseudoacacia heart wood is that it shows very intense natural fluorescence under UV light. The freshly sanded heart wood glows magically green/yellow under UV light. Try out - you will be amazed.

Thanks for the video! I'm currently considering building a TV console with 2-3 wood slabs like this (same brand and style, but the 72-inch slabs). Being a heavier and denser wood, I was wondering how heavy you thought it was? Would you consider it on the heavier side? How realistic would it be to build a console with two 2-3 slabs, with respect to weight (considering transport of the said console)? Thanks!

It's not heavy at all. I think it's lighter than maple/oak for instance.

Hello, I have a question, I have the same acacia counters and for the island, recently I had to sand the central counter because there were defects, brand of original pins and everything. Unfortunately when I reapplied tung oil like the other countertops, the result became too dark. Do you have a solution for me? Thank you

@@hugochampagne9733 Sorry, I've never made a kitchen counter out of wood. I tend to go with a polyurethane for water resistance, but lots of guys are getting into the hardwax oils (like Odies) and then they just re-apply every year or two. I have no experience with that.

I find it a bit soft. I think it'll get dinged up. I'd sooner go with maple for a counter -- at least for hardness.
