Thank you for this demonstration. Good video. I understand using pencils on large areas is frustrating g. I have ordered pastels, still waiting for them. Anxious to start using them. This helps ease some of the anxiety. God bless

You finally did it! I love the colors...very different from your usual muted tones. I want to try this technique as I find large open areas intimidating. Thanks so much for a great idea.

I love this!! The sky turned out very cool, a perfect mottled cloudy day look. And the cotton candy tree is amazing! I use these pastels all the time for backgrounds, and I love them, but have never tried them on a larger scale like this. Such a good idea!

I use pastels a great deal. I recommend a light application of pastel pencil to get into the nooks and crannies. A good tip is to keep a lump of Blue Tac in your left hand...you can use it to clean you fingers, and it's great for cleaning up the edges AND if you make it into a roll and roll it across your page it will substantially lighten whole area. Check it out!

Hi. Thank you for this video, I have had a set of soft pastels for years, but no idea how to use them! I love my colouring pencils, and now have an urge to play. When using markers in colouring books, rather than tear out the page, I use an A4 cardboard sheet, the back of a pad, or the sheets that are inside a reinforced envelope are perfect, and not only does it protect the page underneath the artwork, it also gives a firmer surface to work with. The beauty is that you're using something that would be considered as waste otherwise. I do enjoy your tutorials, thanks again. 😃

I love my set on Mungyo pastels. I mainly use them for backgrounds now but I am following ColourandFelt Heather and use lays the pastels down as a base and then goes over them with an aquabrush. So I'm definitely wanting to try both techniques and see how I do. And watching all of the Kerby videos has made me want to finally order more of his books. I was petrified of them when I first started. Now I feel like I could conquer his pages.

I like how you use cotton swabs for blending. If you have an Ulta Beauty or a Sally's Beauty Supply nearby, they sell swabs for makeup application. These swabs have an oval/flat side and a pointed tip side that you can get into those small spaces!

Just...wow! Great job Rachel! Your color combo choices are always spot on. If you can believe it, I am Still working on Brad! I've had to walk away from him so many times because my hands start aching after about 10 minutes😣. And you know how much detail you have to agonize over with these books😥😥. I really love the pastel first idea! How did your hand feel afterwards? I'm betting not as stiff as they would had you used all colored pencils! Anyway...I'm always so impressed by your work. Your cotton candy tree looks just delicious!😙😙

Fantastic tip about using the cotton swap to remove to much pastel. I was very intrigued with how you can about this video tutorial. Changing up your normal coloring application style, was it inspired by something you saw, read in a book, boredom? Do you read books for Audible? I think you'd be fantastic at this!

Beautiful page! I love all the bright color. Pastels are wonderful things, I refuse to even touch a Kirby Rosanes page without them anymore, and they definitely make those double spreads of his less frustrating. If you like the look but don't want the mess consider investing in a set of pastel pencils. My favorite brand is stabilo, they're a little pricey but worth every cent in the color range and quality. Whatever their brand though, they let you get into all those little, tiny, places like the tree branches because they sharpen just like a regular colored pencil and your hands stay clean! The other thing I use with mine are makeup q-tips. They come in a few different shapes including pointed and can get right into all of those corners and cut down on that white halo. Happy coloring!

great tutorial! A solution to keep your fingers clean would be to use pastel pencils. There are soft ones that go down as easily as the sticks and are great for detail work.

I love these techniques! I especially love the way those hills look. I need to try this. I see in your description that you are using both oil and wax colored pencils over the soft pastels. Does it make a difference? If so, what's the difference? Thanks!

This is beautiful! I am fairly new to coloring and I have never heard of pastels... you've inspired me to give them a try. You were concerned about smudging the pastels when blending in small places and tight edges. I have used pointy cotton swabs in the past and they have worked very well. Thank you for posting!

I just lay down a sheet of tissue paper under my page when using soft pastels. This works for keeping it in the book as well. If i want it in the book i trim tissue paper to fit my page and put double sided tape in the crease then place the tissue paper in :) that way it's on the left and keeps the otherside under the tissue paper clean. I also use a small detail paintbrush with a firm bristle for those small spaces.
