English is the second language in Malaysia. If anyone in Malaysia couldn't understand English, they are definitely not Malaysian but immigrants.

The staff in wanjo are Indonesian. They sometimes don't understand English. Hence they laugh, giggle, they don't know what to respond to you.

If you happen to be in a restaurant and the worker don:t speak English means they are not Malaysian. Perhaps they are from Indonesia. Most Malaysians do speak English

Loving this stream of consciousness style. Very different from other vloggers. To be honest I sometimes leave you in the background without looking at the video. Like a lot of Malaysians (as you've discovered) I'm kind of addicted to watching foreign vloggers experience Malaysia. Maybe it's the pride? Maybe it's the different point of view? Locals often overlook the good things around them. It takes a foreign eye to notice things we miss. I've always considered KL to be quite dirty until I started watching these kind of videos. Only then did I notice how clean it actually is. I grew up in the 80s where KL *was* dirty. And in my mind it stayed that way for a long time. Anyway, about the walking thing. I used to walk from one end of KL to the other end in my teens so locals do do that (also I was broke and jobless back then). The taking the trains/metro everywhere is fairly recent, I'd say in the last 7-10 years?

Hi Ben. We can never satisfy everyone in life. So don't bother with the negative comments. Your vlog is just about you enjoying life and being.honest. I am in Melaka, about 2 hours drive from KL. Feel free to come down and I would be more than happy to take you around. You can even make it a day trip. A bus trip from TBS may cost you around RM15 per one way trip. Melaka is one of the oldest state in Malaysia, established some 800 years ago. KL on the other hand is only about 200 years old.

It's is not local workers, it is immigrants workers from Indonesians. Maybe they don't understand English. Any restaurant in Malaysia only have immigrants workers. Some of them not understand English. Maybe that time iftar break time. Don't have table left.. In ramadhan 6.30 pm to 7.45 pm any restaurant halal food will table full. You must come before that time or after that time.

I apologize on behalf of the Indonesian workers. Them Indonesian workers sometimes they don't really understand English words.

Maybe lots of workers at Wanjo restaurant don't understand English well. Most of them are from Indonesia. Their reactions seem silly and hurtful. They're not Malaysians. In Kuala Lumpur, there are way too many foreign workers. Hope you can forget about that table experience. Keep making videos without caring about negative comments

The barebone nasi lemak consists of the rice cooked in coconut milk plus the sambal (spicy condiment). When I was little we used to have this type of barebone nasi lemak (wrapped in banana leaf) we could buy for 10 cents. The cucumber slices, the peanut and anchovies are what we call the accessories; they are not absolutely necessary. I suggest the next time you have nasi lemak, try to taste the barebone nasi lemak first. This way you can tell whether the nasi lemak is good. The other ingredients you can eat later. By the way, eating nasi lemak with chicken only became popular about 20 years ago.

Sorry for the bad experience at Wanjo normally there's 2 lines the dine in and take out. You were at the take out line. Wanjo does have a lot of migrant workers that may have either zero English education to some level of English. For some it may seem intimidating as they don't know how to communicate with you effectively (they will say yes to everything) but iftar time is quite busy time you maybe SOL there, maybe you should ask or find a Malaysian worker. Theres probably 20 migrant workers and 1 native born Malaysian there, the boss is always Malaysian (hint hint). If that doesn't work you could ask a random Malaysian customer there too i am sure some of them are willing help you, Malaysians aren't like Newyorkers in a hurry to do the next thing, Malaysians prefer to move at snail's pace lol and late for everything lol (the stereotype). People on the comments are trying to make your life easier they're not telling you what to do but they're saying what you should be doing . YOLO right? .

We locals also experience this type of service, depending on the location. If it's a hotel, the service is excellent and very friendly, but if it's a place like this, if he knows you, it'll be fine it's not dependent on their mood.

I suggest you stay in Kl through Songkran because it wont take you long to realize getting sprayed with iced cold water everywhere you go for 12 days is unenjoyable. I've watched another KZfaqr that claimed there is another nasi lemak place thats better than Wanjo. Also in the Kampung Baru area. Smaller and less known but great service and food. I think Wanjo's case is like their fame has caught up, so you are basically correct, can't expect warm service from a place like that.

What one thing foreigners need to know when they visit Malaysia is that, Malaysians(majority) will understand English because its taught in our school syllabus. And there are many migrant workers especially in KL. Why didn't you just sit there and eat your food..its only what 30+minutes left you said before breaking of fast. You are just a few foreigner that i've seen, who can eat with their hands. Getting Grab during peak hours and at your location is almost impossible. The best nasi lemak is usually the ones sold by the aunties by the roadside. Obviously those are foreign workers who may not understand English that's why you're ignored. We, Malaysians do not prejudice against muslims or non muslims, local or foreigners. Sorry you have to go through such thing. Those workers won't dare to act indifferent towards the locals or else the boss gets complains.

I've tried Wanjo before . My honest opinion , it's tasty alright , but overrated and pricey af . The waitress aslo serve me lesser rice for idk what reason . As a local myself I feel disappointed .

Another tip for you. Don't go to restaurant during break fast time 7pm-8pm. It'll be very crowded for sure.

Almost all Malaysians can speak English (it is our 2nd language) so those who can't are most probaby other nationalities who work in Malaysia. Those staff who did not repond to your request for a seat must have been Indonesians and not Malaysians. Sorry for your bad experience at Wanjo.

Hi Ben, sorry for the bad experience. Usually malay locals would eat nasi lemak for breakfast and being in Ramadhan they would be breaking their fast at home or in the mosques. If there were locals there , most definitely they would assist u to get a table or very willing to share their table. 33 ringgit for what you had was pricey though . Most restaurant in Malaysia take immigrants for their staff, either Bangladeshi ( mostly can speak & understand English) , frm Myanmar ( mostly can speak &understand English) , Indonesian ( mostly Cannot speak & understand English) . Since most of the staff in Wanjo were Indonesian immigrants, u should have tried speaking to them in Indonesian since u said u stayed there for 2 years. There’s not much difference between Malay & indonesian language. Ben, I think u should try to learn a little bit of Malay whilst u’re here. It won’t hurt u know. Who knows, u might even get discounts or free food ..😊

Here is the thing about Puasa. I really dont care if I eat in front of those who's fasting whether its Muslim or Hindu. That is their relationship with god and their beleifs. Don't make me part of it. That doesn't mean I deliberately try to eat in front of them.

Sorry, i go to mamak indian muslim restaurants at 6.30pm. Take the food and eat and drink there. So go to wanjo at 6.30pm when i am sure it is less crowded. Sit there and eat your nasi lemak. Muslims generally are used to people eating and drinking when working in F & B. The food is ready there. Unlike in a bazaar night market where you are suppose to take away coz no tables and chairs at the night markets. Get it ?

Ben, if you are reading this it's not that they do not want to help you get a table or seat but during RAMADHAN priority is always given to our Muslim brothers and sisters tables or seats in readiness for breaking fast around 7. 25pm. Some restaurants even have reserved tables for customers. If you had come during non breaking fast time you would easily get a seat to consume yr meal. Besides I also suspect the workers do not understand English well as they are mainly migrants though some do understand smatterings og English.

Frankly I never heard a shop rejecting people eating (a paying customer). Perhaps full house for breaking fast

FYI normally people buy food and eat at home or restaurant. For restaurant you need to buy smthg and sit. Or book first for certain restaurant. Some people will moan or complain Ben, no matter what you say or do, Just do you, and remember they are interacting with you regardless! As for your treatment by these particular staff members, remember that you will not be liked or helped by everybody. You are a single, white male from the States,, and some will have preconceived ideas, take the piss or be disrespectful to you. It's not you mate, it's them! Try not to let it get to you too much!

They are young, probably somewhat immature, lack life experience/ training , perhaps education and also lowly paid and motivated. Also in Asian culture sometimes they laugh when they do not understand, feel embarrassed but reaction in likely not intended to be rude. It may be hard for westerners initially to understand since it is opposed to their unfront direct communicating styles. As well, as you have already mentioned, you do not know if tables had been pre-booked, and if the group mentioned were regulars or if they know someone there and hence the preferential or perceived shabby bias treatment.

If possible avoid going to popular muslim eateries during the breaking fast time (7.15-8.00pm). Save your sanity 😂 Muslims breaking fast + tourists + limited hours of operations because they close during fasting hours = chaos

I guess you went there at bad timing... the locals will crowd that place or any other restaurant an hour before the breaking of fast during the fasting month of Ramadan... my suggestion to you is to come an hour after the breaking of fast to eat... it will be less crowded then... (ask around when the breaking of fast time).... about the laughing waiters, i know for a fact that they have poor command of English, hence they are just hiding their ignorance by laughing...

Malaysia has great food. Go to Jalan Alor, I know you don't think much of it, but try Wong Ah Wah order butter prawns, bbq chicken wings, baby gai lan, that should be enough for one.

Wait. You spent 2 years in Indonesia, which also means you spent at least 1 ramadhan there, and yet you were unprepared for some of the ‘ramadhan attitudes’ here in Kuala Lumpur. I’m going to hazard a guess that Indonesians are not as uptight and reactive as Malaysians are, or can be, towards people who do not fast during ramadhan. Part of this assumption comes from my sister who has spent time working in Indonesia and told me that even muslims can eat, unharassed, in public spaces during ramadhan, provided it is done discreetly.

wanjo is OVERATED and PRICEY. Theres thousands of other Nasi Lemak out there that are much better in terms of flavours and PRICE. Hope you will find them soon! Happy exploring Ben
