As a retired [71] garage mechanic and committed petrol head since the 1950s its been a joy to watch Ed getting down to jobs I may have done in the past and the inventive stuff that I was always eager to have a go at when working for others over the years. Its been like working in the garage with him and brings back so many memories of dirty hands and smelly overalls, I loved every minuet it...Keep at it Ed .

I think the format is perfect. No boring, unending intro, no shifty deals at the beginning and end, we get straight to the nitty-gritty of watching Mr China do his magic. Edd's onscreen presence is great, it's welcoming and interesting, the explanations of what's going on are so good, us viewers then think we can tackle the same job ourselves!

These are challenges that the typical mechanic deals with when facing an old car that needs to be resurrected. Particular are bolts that won't yield. That's when you realize penetrating fluid is your best friend. Top tip: when trying to loosen frozen bolts for the first time, never use a ratchet. Save the teeth! I personally prefer a flex or sliding handle. Much more solid and able to transfer more torque on those stubborn nuts and bolts.

Here's a pro tip: If you are not in a hurry, first spray all the bolts, nuts and interference fit components with penetrating oil and once you get to them in a few days(perhaps work on other parts of the car in the meanwhile), the oil will have soaked deep into all the cracks and makes work SO MUCH easier. Penetrating oil effectiveness is a function of time.

Couple of comments Edd. First, when connecting leads to a battery I was always taught red lead on first and off last. Also before trying to fire up an engine for the first time after lying idle for over 10 years I’m surprised that you didn’t take out the plugs, inject some diesel or light machine oil and hand crank to ensure it wasn’t seized or had sticking pistons crank or cams... Cheers

"Meanwhile, while Edd is sorting out the mechanical stuff, Im gonna pop right over to a good friend of mine who refurbishes wheels". "Hello, are you Mike? I am Mike too. Can I use the sandblaster? I like to say that I have done my part in this. Can I push this button?"

That scripted banter where Mike would come back to the workshop and wonder why the job wasn't done yet just got a bit tiresome. He was actually better in the early seasons where it wasn't quite so formulaic, international viewers would also need to figure out the cockney rhyming slang. "3000 quid ? Are you having a turkish ?" They had to tone down some of the humour as well for the american audience. I remember in one episode he said "of course the electrics are unreliable in this vehicle, it was made in America".
