I watched your whole video and understand your issues. I do have to say that if you are visiting a third world country, you shouldn’t expect 1st world amenities. WiFi is costly and not everywhere has free WiFi available. Most of the food in the RMI is imported but they have the best sushi grade sashimi in the world at the most affordable prices. If you go to a country, look at what they offer locally. Chicken ramen is common but it’s not indigenous to the country. Visit the local market and you’ll find great local produce. Breadfruit chips, local fruits and vegetables. Customer service does need improvement. Apologies for rude customer service from Island Cafe. We charge $0.25 for straws because we offer sippy cup lids and we want to discourage the use of plastic straws because it’s bad for environment. MIVA or OCIT should address your concerns.

Sounds like all we need in Majuro are 1) accessible national 4G-enabled SIM card vendors 2) well-stocked Google Maps directory with useful info 3) walk paths We already got the most accessible ocean and taxi service in the world ❤ (today I partially paid with limes to cover my fare, as I had a Fijian coin that I mistook for a quarter!)

Sorry u had to experience that, but you should have gone to Marshall Islands Resort, in my opinion I think they have better customer service, and their staff would’ve been happy to help you with your questions. Usually the RMI has very nice people but I think it’s just because of the lack of sources given to you to check out tourist destinations.

Im watching your video and I know that it is true and I am agreeing to your concern. And as a marshallese citizen but I live in the Main land, I have to take my part and tell the government, the traditional leaders and other citizens of the Marshall Islands to clean the cities for tourist to come and visit and also train people to properly welcome people from other states. Nicely and once again thank you so much for sharing your concern on this platform. And I am deeply sorry for the misunderstandings in my home land.😊

Girl there’s a lot of things you should know in Marshall Islands where you can go scuba diving, and get some food to eat. I truly understand you issue but not only Bikini atoll you can go there’s another in anemanit, there’s a ship there too and the MIR Hotel it’s beautiful too

I think you just visited the wrong island. I feel like the capitol is not catered to tourists in comparison to the other island kwajalein. They also have more caucasian people living there as the army base is on there. 😅😅 sorry you had to deal with the mean locals, they are just not use to foreigners and there is no industry for tourism currently.

regarding the "i dont know" situation: there's still a caste system there, and resources such as knowing numbers, names, and passwords (YES believe it or not 😭) are all held in iron fists by the higher-ups. the ships and boats, however, get "i don't know" answers usu because we literally don't know where the owners of the boats are, as sudden family trips and on-the-spot expeditions (usu by other tourists - sepcifically large tourist groups) are extremely common, and because of the caste system, it could cost your business a pretty penny if you pry too much n could accost your guests even more (most boats belong to the families in power; i've heard of a horror story where a boat was forced to take tourists to a spot, n the driver was drunk n aggressive n threatened to leave them stranded if they "tested" him). your're 100% right about the customer service and nothing to do, and it gets worse when you realize things like air transportation to leave the islands are almost totally monopolized and "authorities" like MIVA and the EPA are rife with corruption. places like Eneko - which you'd have to book weeks in advance - are better but not by much. Enemanit used to be great, too, but not so sure about it rn. 😕 i LOOOVE this place because i'm from here but even i can agree it's not what it once was because now, even the families in power use it as a jump-pad to get out of the pacific (yes, even the climate activists do this) or use it as temporary hiding spots. the best way to experience it is to go there with someone (of the ruling class, ofc) as they'll be able to secure accomodation, activities, n have "ri-jerbal" (the lowest class - people like me) prepare "cultural experiences" for you. 😭 it sucks to see them let it go of the beautification n accessibilty efforts from the past decade and that it's affected the quality of your trip, but nonetheless, thank you for visiting 👍 edit: had to add that even Raycrew (almost our premier scuba place - ran by expert Japanese scuba-divers) have trouble securing boats fr (as in, they have the appointment n reservation, but they still have trouble having it show up). also, someone on here said u askked the wrong people. Lol see what i mean?

We are a shy people, mostly if confronted with something unknown do we get uncomfortable, and i say this because we are also the yappiest yappers should we find ourselves in the opposite setting. Its nothing personal, we dont like being put on the spotlight.

Very "real" video and informative. I lived on Kwajalein for 4 years doing contract work for the DoD. The Marshallese people/culture are unlike any I have known, and I've traveled throughout Indonesia, Thailand and spent some time in Micronesia. Your experience there isn't surprising to me. I believe the Marshallese were the last people in the S. Pacific to develop a written language and anyone from an advanced country inevitably struggles hard to have productive dialogs/relationships with most people from that area. I will say this, though......I am an avid snorkeler and have never seen better snorkeling than around the Kwajalein Atoll. Countless varieties of fish and coral combined with generally great visibility simply spoiled me. But would I go back? Nope.....and for the reasons your video highlights. And Kwajalein is a step above Majuro since it's basically an Army base so living conditions, food and most services are better. One other major drawback is the flights serving those islands. During my time on Kwajalein United was the only option, and their service/prices reflected a 'monopolistic attitude', i.e., absolutely horrible service, no leg room, no food, and a flight schedule that just plain stinks. Safe travels!
@peters219
@peters219 7 ай бұрын
@jlvandat69 They were indeed among the last places to have any outside influence, due to their remote location and the hazards of navigating atolls and reefs(pre- GPS). Having a written language, like most of the Pacific, came with missionaries. Like many others, the language is rich with meaning that is not adequately translated into English. Their dialogue, much like others in the Pacific, is full of warmth, humility, and humor. They have a different conversational tone that makes English seem very cold and businesslike. Kwajalein is perhaps the worst place to try to understand the locals who are restricted from access and allowed only work entry. Further, understand that the base is there to test the US war machine. Authority is all that's projected while exploding ordinances in their beautiful home.
@jlvandat69
@jlvandat69 7 ай бұрын
@peters219 Actually, Kwajalein is a multifunctional base where explosive ordinance events rarely occur now. The military has a presence, but many other government and private sector entities are active as well. One example (recently ended, I believe) was the effort to preserve sea turtle population, a species activity hunted by the Marshallees. I personally worked with volunteer groups to clean beaches of plastic debris that constantly accumulates, mostly washed up from the adjacent Ebey island. The point if my comment was to highlight a very common problem for travelers from more advanced countries and that is the vast cultural differences. In the case of this lady, she found the local disinterest in business surprising and frustrating, but it helps to understand that generally-speaking the Marshallees have interests other than "conducting business ", per se. Just a completely different culture and the communication difficulties are one manifestation.

I know this is unsolicited advice, but I can't resist 😂. I would not recommend scuba in a country like that unless it is operated by someone with international training and standards. The guy renting a hotel room is not likely servicing gear professionally.. etc. And if the outfit does not a permanent sign they probably have a bad history. Great video, I loved the cat. look forward to more !
