For future reference, if you look near the chip you were talking about, there's an area that says PREOUT (twice) - and there's some test points near that - you can use those, and create a cable to plug into another amp (or your speaker) and see if audio is at least getting that far, then there may also be a test point AFTER the amp, but before the jack....

Just had a quick look at the service manual, IC301 Audio Amp: Pin 7 Vcc, should be at 2.9V, Pin 5 Gnd. Pins 4 & 8 audio outputs, they should connect to o/p jack. This is where an oscilloscope comes in handy for tracing the audio through. Cap C317 is across supply supply rail so you should have nearly batt. voltage (I think it goes through a diode, so that will drop a little).

There's an obvious crack in there! Tip: get yourself an audio wire and use your speaker to reverse the signal from the jack next time you have a similar problem

At 23:50 you can see a diagram on the circuit board showing you how the drive belt is fed around the wheels. Could be a useful future reference for similar projects that might also have instructions for things like this written on the board itself.

Hi I watched the second part to this last night, I have a very similar model has exactly the same functions as this model, however, the tape plays slow as it nears the end of Side A and the radio has no sound, I'd love to fix it but wouldn't know where to start lol. You can find the service manual in the message below Vince. I do it like this as sometimes KZfaq blocks web addresses and you need to approve them first.

It is unlikely that one of the ICs has been damaged. My suggestion is to look for corroded or broken paths. I repaired a walkman with that problem. I think this board has some broken paths. When a capacitor is short, on both sides you must have 0 ohms, if it is different from 0, what you have is a resistor in parallel to the capacitor.

These type of old boards use to get faults on vias as well, they use to broke internally making no contact to both sides of the board 39:32 you were probably reading remaining voltage in other capacitors that's why you got a beep, when i find something alike, i turn it on and i see if i have voltage on that capacitor, if not, i can clearly say that it's shorted. you can also short it with tweezers and read it again

I just realized that the silkscreen on the board shows how the belt should be put on.

I know this is an old video but want to make a suggestion. It is easier to break circuits down into blocks of one function. For an example when you asked what made the sound. Imagine it like this. Sound is decoded from the tape and sent as a signal to some chip that has to process it into audio. After it is processed it is fed into an amplifier. Somewhere there the volume switch will come into play. Then out the audio jack. Makes it easier to narrow down where the fault in when it isn't on one side like the power chips. When you look at chips they tend to always look similar to what they do. For an example you'll usually see a computer processor near a bunch of capacitors to reduce sound. You'll see amplifiers near larger power traces and heat sinks among other larger components. When you start noticing these patterns like that you can get an idea what part of the board does what even if you don't grasp the full picture. Hope this helps and I would seriously suggest purchasing yourself some kind of oscilloscope. In your case maybe a very cheap single channel one. You don't need it more than just to see if signals are there or not. Sure a multimeter is nice but it wont easily show audio or signals coming from a jack but an oscilloscope can see noise like that easily. One other device that maybe helpful is a logic probe. Very cheap device allows you to tell where a signal has a high or low or if it is fluctuating between those values. Very good and simple way to see if any kind of signal is happening on that probe spot. Tools like this can show you what is happening for example on that pre amp chip.

If you have an old computer speaker (or maybe the amplified speaker you already use would suffice) you really should build yourself a simple 'signal tracer' Vince. I made one and use it regularly. It's very helpful in tracing where your signal is breaking down. That and a very cheap & cheerful power supply would help you no end with these repairs.

Great attempt =D That small ceramic cap measuring as a short - it was probably across a coil or inductor (normal). These sometimes have independant fuses on there for the different sections. I thought I saw an 'F1' marking on there earlier - check none of those are open circuit. The larger cap on there looks to be a super cap - those often leak (sometimes hard to tell), are you sure that didn't cause any damage around that part of the PCB. All you need is one missing ground connection (maybe around the battery terminal area) and you could lack sound. Sometimes they use ferrite beads and those can blow like a fuse too (and those can go open circuit as well). This is the sort of thing that would be easier to fix with a scope - just scope the inputs and outputs around the audio circuitry to work out where the audio is missing.

Some tape palyers use a mute switch that will actuate when the player is in any other function different to play. That is to avoid hiss during rewind or FFwd. This switch is desactivated only in play. Should be on the PCB .... Also, the radio, at first, like it didnt want to tune. Phone jack defective ?, most of this walkmans help themselves with the earphones in the jack using them as an antena ...

I remember a Sony walkman wireless internet the 90's in Japan with remote control. In that's era in Japan they use a metal rechargable battery or nickel cadmion more 80's In the remote control they put some eq programmable with LCD and someone come with radio am/FM/TV.

Hi Vince 5 mins into the video and i suspected the amp ic to be bad replace it and the sound should come back.

I like the suggestion that the 3.5mm jack may be wired in a proprietary Sony format. You may need to double check the connections on the output plug and see if the voltage is varying while the unit is playing.

Yeah, put it down and have a little think. That fixes no end of problems (usually inspiration comes when you are least expecting it).

try getting an amplifier - like your speaker , attack grounds together then use the tip of your speaker jack to move around the board to see if you can pick sound up anywhere else on the board? you may need a preamp too

Could it have something to do with the buttons on the front of the device? Maybe there is something keeping it from switching... I also like the idea of lifting the mute pin to see if sound comes back...

Back then these little tape players cost over $100+ if you wanted all the buttons and a screen with digital number display.

It probably has to do with the short at 31:15. Also you can check if there is any voltage on the 3.5 jack while on radio mode.

Cam you get a direct feed from the sound chip it self? As someone point out if that crack is a problem you can check from the sound chip directly to see if there is any sound

Try watching videos here on KZfaq about headphone jack problems on other devices, that might give you a hint as to where the fault is.

With Electrolytic caps on tv's you go buy the 10% rule but its not a must follow thing.

Hi Vince the voltage on pin 7 is too low it should be nearer the battery voltage.

You should always check audio on cassette not on radio! And maybe with amplituner.

Does that Walkman have a rectangular socket for the rectangular section of the headphone to plug into as the headphone is not a standard headphones connection.

Power out usually refers to an output be it voltage or Audio, so it makes sense a stereo Pre-amp/Amplifier has two Power outputs and two power inputs, thats six pins for a chip, so what do the other pins do, well various functions can be assigned ; Eg filtering, muting bias and even feedback pins to control stability and or even lower distortion. Now Vince I noticed you used two brands of batteries, which BTW is just as bad as using batteries with different levels of charge to them, Yes modern batteries for the most are now designed so that this is not to much of a problem by them exploding via a mismatch of charge to them, but even so there still is a chance if a really bad battery is connected with a slightly over charged batery fresh from the factory, Another reason why it's a bad Idea to use different brands is the fact each battery manufacturer have different chemical compositions for their batteries, thus one or more batteries may experience extreme stress and thus induce leakage, not to mention the significant loss of charge to the battery with the highest charge to it..

I have this same model Sony Walkman (wmfx-463) in really good condition with all the same features everything is fully working and ive tested it Radio & Cassette work fine, i'm trying to put a value on it for resale It comes without headphones, No belt clip and no tech manual and theres no box with it any ideas on value anyone ?,its not a really a vintage one built 1997... i'm hoping its worth a bit more than the £1 i paid for it at a boot sale, any pointers on value much appreciated-thanks in advance

Of the radio side of things, like with phones with the radio chips, the headphones become the aerial and its likely its got white noise suppression which means it only makes a proper sound when it tunes into a radio station. I had a portable back in the day that had to use special aerial headphones otherwise the radio never got a signal which I think it took from the earthing.

you improove your skills pretty fast, but you need to be more gentle to electronics, don't toss them that much ... anyway your videos are interesting, keep making them ;). I think the problem is with square chip on the back PCB. It is LA4xxx ... this chip is main headphone amp and tape head preamp. Many years ago i had to change a similar one of theese to fix similar sony walkman. Set your iron to 330-350C ... 400C is too hot, solder melt on about 187C. Try to reach front board, where is main processor, the board may be coroded and cause the problems. Also try to connect the grounds on walkman and your test power amp and poke walkman's volume potentiometer pins with one of your test amp channels for any sound.

From what I can see the capacitor that is reading short goes to the switch next to the head phone jack. It appears to be a three pin switch so the center pin should lead of to the faulty component(more than likely the LA4585 chip). But by flipping the switch the other way the short on the capacitor should disappear. If it doesn't then the faulty component is after the capacitor which I can't see in the video.
